The world of work is changing profoundly, at a time when the global economy is not creating a sufficient number of jobs. Many documents issued by the EU and various researches, carried out by companies and human resources experts, point out that the so-called “soft” skills are closely connected with employability, particularly for young people entering the labour market. At present, EU countries have different methodologies and approaches to the teaching and assessment of soft skills. Another obstacle is represented by the absence of a common language. There are different ways of naming ‘soft skills’, different definitions of them, different manners of classifying and clustering them. The article explores some classifications of soft skills and presents a collection of best practices and methods for teaching and learning them at University level, taking into account different perspectives and basing on the results of two European projects focused on this topic. The final goal is to provide an analysis aimed at the identification of the most important soft skills needed for a successful transition from University education to the labour market. The analysis includes a brief chronological excursus on relevant studies on the subject, a review of current literature on employability skills, quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (focus groups) researches from Europe and Third Countries, identifying the range of soft skills relevant for newly graduates. The aim of this overview is to enhance understanding of soft skills and to indicate key areas for soft skill development at University level. Published online: 01 June 2016

W drugiej, empirycznej części tekstu, założenia teoretyczne zostały zestawione z wynikami badań sondażowych przeprowadzonych wśród przyszłych nauczycieli – studentów pedagogiki przedszkolnej i wczesnoszkolnej. Badania przeprowadzone w ramach programu Erasmus +, projekt „Kitchen Lab for Kids”, numer grantu: 2018-1-PL01-KA201-050857 Artykuł sfinansowany ze środków EU. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: This article examines teachers’ attitudes towards socioemotional learning (SEL) and digital technology in the post-pandemic era, focusing on the DigiSEL project. This project aimed to integrate digital tools and SEL to support students’ well-being and academic success, enhancing primary school teachers’ skills in these areas. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The study involved partner countries conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine the needs of in-service and preservice teachers. The Italian team’s needs analysis, conducted through a Focus Group and a creativity survey, revealed insights into teachers’ attitudes and experiences with digital teaching and creativity skills development. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The authors introduce the DigiSEL project, detailing how it aligned with their research for the online course modules. RESEARCH RESULTS: The Italian team’s focus group outcomes highlighted innovative solutions for educational challenges. Initial frustration with technology evolved into a rewarding transformation as educators mastered its use. Online courses were identified as motivating and providing novel approaches to address students’ diverse issues, such as concentration and emotional expression difficulties. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Despite challenges, the project effectively supported educators in their roles and maintained their enthusiasm for teaching. Drawing inspiration from earlier European research on creativity and ICT in teaching, this study aligned with teachers’ perceptions of creativity as vital for students’ development and demonstrated how technology could enhance teaching methods. In conclusion, the DigiSEL project showcased the potential of merging SEL and digital tools to empower educators and foster student growth amidst evolving educational landscapes. More research should take in consideration the importance of SEL and creativity to enlighten passion in teaching with new and inspiring methods.

Objectives of the research: The aim of this article is to explore how Karol Wojtyła’s theory of participation can enhance our understanding of ‘Service Learning’ (SL) and its potential benefits for education and personal development resulting from the implementation of SL in higher education. Research methods: The research was based on an analysis of publications on Service-Learning, a hermeneutic examination of Karol Wojtyła’s writings on participation, and a case study using SL. A short description of the context of the issue: Service-Learning is defined as reflection and action to transform reality, as serving in solidarity with the application of learning content and as learning by serving the community. This article presents the principles of Service-Learning through community participation, exposing the benefits of this approach in education. Research findings: Karol Wojtyła’s theory of participation serves as a creative inspiration for the theoretical basis of Service-Learning. Its principles can introduce SL project participants to personalistic values. The concepts of service, community, common good, solidarity, dialogue and opposition play a key role in this confrontation. By combining service with the learning process, SL can contribute to the development of project participants in terms of both knowledge and social skills. Conclusions and recommendations: In drawing conclusions regarding the potential benefits of implementing the Service-Learning method in education, the authors emphasise that values, in accordance with Wojtyła’s philosophy, are a key element of personal and social development. In the context of SL, people can find fulfilment through relationships with others, which is the answer to contemporary educational challenges. The authors recommend further research into different forms of SL implementation in order to better understand and maximise its potential in fostering participation and social service.
