Within the paradigm of smart cities, smart devices can be considered as a tool to enhance safety. Edge sensing, Internet of Things (IoT), big data, social media analytics, edge computing, and artificial intelligence are key technologies that can be applied through smart devices to create emergency-aware systems. The use of these technologies could make emergency management tasks such as visualizing, analyzing, and predicting disasters easier to perform. The aim of this paper is to conduct a review of recent activities in literature about disaster and emergency management, and showing the role of different edge technologies used in this regard, and through the different stages of dealing with a disaster situation. Special importance is given to two main technologies: Social media analytics and artificial intelligence, due to their exceptional impact on emergency situations. Social media represents a rich source of data while artificial intelligence stands out as the mechanism to deal with the huge amount of data generated by smart devices, and thus needed to tackle all sources of data, in order to predict, detect, manage information, and for authorities to respond to emergency situations. This survey is a comprehensive review for the recent literature on the related topics, providing the reader with a clear overview of the current status and classifying the papers into groups with relations among them. The structuring of the recent literature into four phases makes it easier for the reader to realize the current state of the art. For completeness, this survey ends with a section on open issues and research trends in disaster and emergency management systems.

After different consecutive waves, the pandemic phase of Coronavirus disease 2019 does not look to be ending soon for most countries across the world. To slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, several measures have been adopted since the start of the outbreak, including wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing. Ensuring safety in public areas of smart cities requires modern technologies, such as deep learning and deep transfer learning, and computer vision for automatic face mask detection and accurate control of whether people wear masks correctly. This paper reviews the progress in face mask detection research, emphasizing deep learning and deep transfer learning techniques. Existing face mask detection datasets are first described and discussed before presenting recent advances to all the related processing stages using a well-defined taxonomy, the nature of object detectors and Convolutional Neural Network architectures employed and their complexity, and the different deep learning techniques that have been applied so far. Moving on, benchmarking results are summarized, and discussions regarding the limitations of datasets and methodologies are provided. Last but not least, future research directions are discussed in detail.

Accurate state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) estimation are crucial for optimizing electric vehicle (EV) performance and enhancing the battery lifetime, safety, and reliability, where machine learning (ML) plays a vital role in this regard. While existing surveys explore ML applications in EVs, they often need to address ML approaches for SoC and SoH estimation. This paper bridges this gap by comprehensively reviewing how ML is utilized for SoC and SoH estimation, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses across different battery chemistries. Our review offers a systematic breakdown of critical areas: fundamental concepts and functionalities of prominent ML algorithms for SoC and SoH estimation, a comparative evaluation of ML techniques applied to diverse EV battery types, an exploration of SoC and SoH estimation using modeling approaches within EV battery systems, and the critical role of dataset quality and model evaluation criteria. Moreover, this paper addresses ML tools developed for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), image processing applications in EV batteries, and an in-depth investigation of the system model for ML-based SoC and SoH estimation. Furthermore, we present key concepts and methods for SoC and SoH estimation using ML, compare input features, metrics, hyperparameters, and datasets, and demonstrate ML-based system models for EV battery estimation. By conducting this thorough analysis, we aim to close the existing gap and stimulate future progress in ML for SoC and SoH estimation, primarily focusing on LiBs across different EV applications.

Mobile Crowd-Sensing (MCS) is a new sensing paradigm that takes advantage of extensive use of mobile phones that collect data efficiently and enable several significant applications. MCS paves the way to explore new monitoring applications in different fields such as social networks, lifestyle, healthcare, green applications, and intelligent transportation systems. Hence, MCS applications make use of sensing and wireless communication capabilities provided by billions of smart mobile devices, e.g., Android and iOS based mobile devices. The aim of this paper is to identify and explore the new paradigm of MCS that is using smartphone for capturing and sharing the sensed data between many nodes. We discuss the main components of the infrastructure required to support the proposed framework. The existing and potential applications leveraging MCS are laid out. Further, this paper discusses the current challenges facing the collection methodologies of the participants’ data in task management. The recent issues in the MCS findings are reviewed as well as the opportunities and challenges in sensing methods are analyzed. Finally, open research issues, and future challenges facing mobile crowd-sensing are highlighted.

Brain status information is captured by physiological electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which are extensively used to study different brain activities. This study investigates the use of a new ensemble classifier to detect an epileptic seizure from compressed and noisy EEG signals. This noise‐aware signal combination (NSC) ensemble classifier combines four classification models based on their individual performance. The main objective of the proposed classifier is to enhance the classification accuracy in the presence of noisy and incomplete information while preserving a reasonable amount of complexity. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the NSC technique, which yields higher accuracies of 90% for noiseless data compared with 85%, 85.9%, and 89.5% in other experiments. The accuracy for the proposed method is 80% when SNR = 1 dB, 84% when SNR = 5 dB, and 88% when SNR = 10 dB, while the compression ratio (CR) is 85.35% for all of the datasets mentioned.
