Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have recently rapidly grown to facilitate a wide range of innovative applications that can fundamentally change the way cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are designed. CPSs are a modern generation of systems with synergic cooperation between computational and physical potentials that can interact with humans through several new mechanisms. The main advantages of using UAVs in CPS application is their exceptional features, including their mobility, dynamism, effortless deployment, adaptive altitude, agility, adjustability, and effective appraisal of real-world functions anytime and anywhere. Furthermore, from the technology perspective, UAVs are predicted to be a vital element of the development of advanced CPSs. Therefore, in this survey, we aim to pinpoint the most fundamental and important design challenges of multi-UAV systems for CPS applications. We highlight key and versatile aspects that span the coverage and tracking of targets and infrastructure objects, energy-efficient navigation, and image analysis using machine learning for fine-grained CPS applications. Key prototypes and testbeds are also investigated to show how these practical technologies can facilitate CPS applications. We present and propose state-of-the-art algorithms to address design challenges with both quantitative and qualitative methods and map these challenges with important CPS applications to draw insightful conclusions on the challenges of each application. Finally, we summarize potential new directions and ideas that could shape future research in these areas.

Modern technology has pushed us into the information age, making it easier to generate and record vast quantities of new data. Datasets can help in analyzing the situation to give a better understanding, and more importantly, decision making. Consequently, datasets, and uses to which they can be put, have become increasingly valuable commodities. This article describes the DroneRF dataset: a radio frequency (RF) based dataset of drones functioning in different modes, including off, on and connected, hovering, flying, and video recording. The dataset contains recordings of RF activities, composed of 227 recorded segments collected from 3 different drones, as well as recordings of background RF activities with no drones. The data has been collected by RF receivers that intercepts the drone's communications with the flight control module. The receivers are connected to two laptops, via PCIe cables, that runs a program responsible for fetching, processing and storing the sensed RF data in a database. An example of how this dataset can be interpreted and used can be found in the related research article "RF-based drone detection and identification using deep learning approaches: an initiative towards a large open source drone database" (Al-Sa'd et al., 2019).

With the emergence of the internet of things (IoT) technology, wireless connectivity should be more ubiquitous than ever. In fact, the availability of wireless connection everywhere comes with security threats that, unfortunately, cannot be handled by conventional cryptographic solutions alone, especially in heterogeneous and decentralized future wireless networks. In general, physical layer security (PLS) helps in bridging this gap by taking advantage of the fading propagation channel. Moreover, the adoption of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in wireless networks makes the PLS techniques more efficient by involving the channel into the design loop. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive literature review on the RIS-assisted PLS for future wireless communications. We start by introducing the basic concepts of RISs and their different applications in wireless communication networks and the most common PLS performance metrics. Then, we focus on the review and classification of RIS-assisted PLS applications, exhibiting multiple scenarios, system models, objectives, and methodologies. In fact, most of the works in this field formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) or secrecy capacity (SC) at a legitimate user by jointly optimizing the beamformer at the transmitter and the RIS’s coefficients, while the differences are in the adopted methodology to optimally/sub-optimally approach the solution. We finalize this survey by presenting some insightful recommendations and suggesting open problems for future research extensions.

5G wireless communication systems provide massive system capacity with high data rates, very short low-latency, and ultra-high reliability, in addition to high connection density with a positive experience on smart cities and the Internet of Things (IoT). Future networks are anticipated to revolutionize typical applications such as the enhanced mobile broadband services (EMBB), ultra-reliable low latency communication (uRLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC) anywhere and everywhere. This rationalizes the need to investigate the sustainable elements of 5G networks in smart cities to understand how 5G networks can be more environmentally- friendly and energy-efficient. This paper aims to investigate how 5G networks can act as key enablers in achieving sustainability in smart cities, using a macroscopic review. An overview of 5G communication networks and several 5G technologies used in smart city applications to enhance sustainability is presented. This is followed by investigating the indicators that measure sustainability in 5G networks across the environmental, social, and economic dimensions; and sub-dimensions such as energy efficiency, power consumption, carbon footprint, pollution, cost, health, safety, and security. The results show that the majority of research papers focus on the environmental dimensions of sustainability (42%) when attempting to address sustainability in 5G systems and smart cities. The findings also showed a huge interest in the economic (37%) and social (21%) dimensions as well. Further, when examining the sub-dimensions, it was found that most of the studies focused on energy efficiency (20%), power consumption (17%), and cost (15%).

Within the paradigm of smart cities, smart devices can be considered as a tool to enhance safety. Edge sensing, Internet of Things (IoT), big data, social media analytics, edge computing, and artificial intelligence are key technologies that can be applied through smart devices to create emergency-aware systems. The use of these technologies could make emergency management tasks such as visualizing, analyzing, and predicting disasters easier to perform. The aim of this paper is to conduct a review of recent activities in literature about disaster and emergency management, and showing the role of different edge technologies used in this regard, and through the different stages of dealing with a disaster situation. Special importance is given to two main technologies: Social media analytics and artificial intelligence, due to their exceptional impact on emergency situations. Social media represents a rich source of data while artificial intelligence stands out as the mechanism to deal with the huge amount of data generated by smart devices, and thus needed to tackle all sources of data, in order to predict, detect, manage information, and for authorities to respond to emergency situations. This survey is a comprehensive review for the recent literature on the related topics, providing the reader with a clear overview of the current status and classifying the papers into groups with relations among them. The structuring of the recent literature into four phases makes it easier for the reader to realize the current state of the art. For completeness, this survey ends with a section on open issues and research trends in disaster and emergency management systems.
