The 1st EuNetAir Air Quality Joint Intercomparison Exercise organized in Aveiro (Portugal) from 13th–27th October 2014, focused on the evaluation and assessment of environmental gas, particulate matter (PM) and meteorological microsensors, versus standard air quality reference methods through an experimental urban air quality monitoring campaign. The IDAD-Institute of Environment and Development Air Quality Mobile Laboratory was placed at an urban traffic location in the city centre of Aveiro to conduct continuous measurements with standard equipment and reference analysers for CO, NOx, O3, SO2, PM10, PM2.5, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation and precipitation. The comparison of the sensor data generated by different microsensor-systems installed side-by-side with reference analysers, contributes to the assessment of the performance and the accuracy of microsensor-systems in a real-world context, and supports their calibration and further development. The overall performance of the sensors in terms of their statistical metrics and measurement profile indicates significant differences in the results depending on the platform and on the sensors considered. In terms of pollutants, some promising results were observed for O3 (r2: 0.12–0.77), CO (r2: 0.53–0.87), and NO2 (r2: 0.02–0.89). For PM (r2: 0.07–0.36) and SO2 (r2: 0.09–0.20) the results show a poor performance with low correlation coefficients between the reference and microsensor measurements. These field observations under specific environmental conditions suggest that the relevant microsensor platforms, if supported by the proper post processing and data modelling tools, have enormous potential for new strategies in air quality control

An approach for detecting hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ppb and sub-ppb concentrations is presented. Using three types of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors in temperature cycled operation, formaldehyde, benzene and naphthalene in trace concentrations, reflecting threshold limit values as proposed by the WHO and European national health institutions, are successfully identified against a varying ethanol background of up to 2 ppm. For signal processing, linear discriminant analysis is applied to single sensor data and sensor fusion data. Integrated field test sensor systems for monitoring of indoor air quality (IAQ) using the same types of gas sensors were characterized using the same gas measurement setup and data processing. Performance of the systems is reduced due to gas emissions from the hardware components. These contaminations have been investigated using analytical methods. Despite the reduced sensitivity, concentrations of the target VOCs in the ppb range (100 ppb of formaldehyde; 5 ppb of benzene; 20 ppb of naphthalene) are still clearly detectable with the systems, especially when using the sensor fusion method for combining data of the different MOS sensor types.

For detection of benzene, a gas sensor system with metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors using temperature-cycled operation (TCO) is presented. The system has been tested in two different laboratories at the concentration range from 0.5 up to 10 ppb. The system is equipped with three gas sensors and advanced temperature control and read-out electronics for the extraction of features from the TCO signals. A sensor model is used to describe the sensor response in dependence on the gas concentration. It is based on a linear differential surface reduction (DSR) at a low temperature phase, which is linked to an exponential growth of the sensor conductance. To compensate for cross interference to other gases, the DSR is measured at three different temperatures (200, 250, 300 ∘C) and the calculated features are put into a multilinear regression (partial least square regression – PLSR) for the quantification of benzene at both laboratories. In the tests with the first set-up, benzene was supplied in defined gas profiles in a continuous gas flow with variation of humidity and various interferents, e.g. toluene and carbon monoxide (CO). Depending on the gas background and interferents, the quantification accuracy is between ±0.2 and ±2 ppb. The second gas mixing system is based on a circulation of the carrier gas stream in a closed-loop control for the benzene concentration and other test gases based on continuously available reference measurements for benzene and other organic and inorganic compounds. In this system, a similar accuracy was achieved for low background contaminations and constant humidity; the benzene level could be quantified with an error of less than 0.5 ppb. The transfer of regression models for one laboratory to the other has been tested successfully.

This article presents fundamental work on online assessment of contaminants in recycled plastic processing. Post-consumer recycled plastic can contain various contaminants that prevent closed-loop recycling, which holds especially true for high quality packaging materials like polyolefins. A current German research cluster aims at increasing the recycling quota of these plastic types by gathering comprehensive data and using intelligent methods to optimize the overall recycling process. Due to the heterogenous quality of post-consumer recycling materials, fast online measurement methods are necessary to discriminate smallest possible portions during material processing. This study presents a method to access the recompounding of recycled plastic. A sampling system has been developed and tested to extract samples from the vacuum degassing of the compounding process. Laboratory analyses using GC-MS/O have demonstrated that this system can sample (odorous) volatile compounds from the extrusion process showing potential for the detection of relevant target components. This could give insights into the general composition of the gas phase and therefore enables further work towards an online measurement system and targeted monitoring of contaminants.

Recent advancements in metal oxide semiconductor sensors enable system integrators to make sensor devices without the traditional complications of operating barebone sensor components. Anyone, so it seems, can put together multi-sensor-systems by combining an integrated sensor subsystem with a small piece of digital infrastructure, resulting in low-cost sensor systems or sensor networks for all kinds of applications. With low energy consumption, the deployment of close meshed sensor networks is becoming a reality, promising high density data for big data models. However, data quality is not necessarily a feature of such devices, since the device output signals are heavily processed and the insight into the actual operating technique is black-boxed by the respective sensor manufacturer. High volume production of a sensor model requires widely applicable output information, yet this mainstreaming negatively impacts quality control efforts on the system level as well as niche applications that require specialized operation modes. This article exemplarily examines the measurement chain of typical metal oxide semiconductor sensor applications and deduces requirements for a technically sound advancement of the subject for research and commercial purposes. Equivalent considerations can be made for any low-cost sensor principle and their respective challenges. The conclusion urges all stakeholders participating in the development and marketing of sensor devices to advance a scientifically valid state of knowledge and to educate their customers and even the general public accordingly.

This article investigates methods for sampling volatiles on a compounding extruder to enable the development of a quasi-continuous automated sampling and measurement system for odorous contaminants. A first prototype of a bespoke extraction system was presented in earlier work, comprising four sequential cooling traps and one subsequent sorption trap. This setup allows us to obtain samples from the vacuum degassing port of a Coperion ZSK extruder. Preliminary results indicated that samples contain a plethora of odor-active compounds. This study assesses samples from the processing of post-consumer recycled polypropylene by means of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry/olfactory detection (GC–MS/O), focusing on comparing the composition of condensed and adsorbed samples. The results give an overview of the degassing atmosphere, listing more than 108 volatile compounds including odorants. Qualitative comparison of the sampling techniques indicates significant fractioning between condensates and adsorbates, which is illustrated on an orientation plot for water solubility versus volatility. Based on the results, guidelines for the design of sampling units for automated use in the aspired online monitoring application are proposed to transfer a broad spectrum of relevant contaminants to an attached measurement system.
