The paper presents the process of cellulose extraction from rice straw using water–alkaline solution treatment and the subsequent process of carboxymethylation of the obtained product when activated by microwave radiation. After mercerization of rice straw, the obtained product contained 89.2% cellulose and 6.7% lignin. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the obtained lignocellulose shows three diffraction peaks in the region typical for the polymorphic modification of cellulose Iβ (2θ = 15.50(78), 21.70(145), 34.70(52)). The degree of crystallinity was 65%. The product was heat-stable up to 247 °C. The synthesis of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) based on the obtained product included successive processes of thermostating in alcohol–alkali solution and cellulose esterification reaction using monochloroacetic acid. To activate the carboxymethylation process, microwave radiation was used (350 W for 90 s), which made it possible to reduce the reaction time by more than 100 times. Functional group analysis of the carboxylated lignocellulose from rice straw was carried out using an FTIR spectrometer. In the IR spectra, a band with a maximum of 1742 cm−1 was recorded, corresponding to stretching vibrations of >C(O)OH groups. The degree of polymerization was recorded by mass spectrometry.

The work is aimed at the development of an energy-saving technique involving the partial carboxylation of powdered lignocellulose products from the straw of annual agricultural plants and the use of the obtained products in rubber compositions as a water-swelling filler. Lignocellulose powder from oat straw (composition: α-cellulose—77.0%, lignin—3.8%, resins and fats—1.8%) was used for carboxylation without preliminary separation into components. Microwave radiation was used to activate the carboxylation process. This reduced the reaction time by 2–3 times. The synthesized products were analyzed by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Industrial product sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC) was used as a swelling filler for comparison. The swelling fillers were fractionated by the sieve method; particles with the size of 0–1 mm were used for filling rubber compounds. The amount of swelling filler was 150 parts per 100 parts of rubber (phr). Due to the high filling of rubber compounds, plasticizer Oxal T-92 was added to the composition of a number of samples to facilitate the processing and uniform distribution of ingredients. The rubber composition was prepared in two stages. In the first stage, ingredients without swelling filler were mixed with rubber on a laboratory two-roll mill to create a base rubber compound (BRC). In the second stage, the BRC was mixed with the swelling filler in a closed laboratory plasti-corder rubber mixer, the Brabender Plasti-Corder® Lab-Station. Vulcanization was carried out at 160 °C. For the obtained samples, the physical-mechanical and sorption properties were determined. It has been shown that the carboxylated powdered lignocellulose from oat straw increases the strength properties of rubber in comparison with Na-CMC. It has been shown that when the carboxylated powdered lignocellulose from oat straw is introduced into the rubber composition, the degree of rubber swelling in aqueous solutions of various mineralizations increases by 50 and 100% in comparison with a noncarboxylated lignocellulose.

It has been determined that introducing powdered cellulose obtained from oat straw by the chemomechano-destruction method in the composition of rubbers increases the tensile strength of vulcanizates as compared with samples that do not contain this filler. It was found that the pH of water medium and degree of mineralization influence on the degree of swelling of rubbers containing powdered cellulose from oat straw negligibly.

This study presents data on the use of shungite ore (the Bakyrchik deposit, Kazakhstan) and its concentrate as fillers in elastomer composites based on nitrile butadiene rubber. In addition to carbon, these shungite materials contain oxides of Si, Fe, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Al. The shungite concentrate was obtained through a flotation process involving five stages. The chemical composition analysis of these natural fillers revealed that during flotation, the carbon content increased 3.5 times (from 11.0 wt% to 39.0 wt%), while the silicon oxide content decreased threefold (from 49.4 wt% to 13.6 wt%). The contents of oxides of K, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Al decreased by less than 1%, and iron oxide content increased by 40% (from 6.7 wt% to 9.4 wt%). The study explored the impact of partial or full replacement of carbon black (CB) of P 324 grade with the shungite ore (ShO) and the shungite concentrate (ShC) on the vulcanization process and the physical–mechanical properties of the rubber. It was found that replacing CB with ShO and ShC reduces Mooney viscosity ML (1 + 4) 100 °C of the rubber compounds by up to 29% compared to the standard CB-filled sample. The use of the shungite fillers also increased scorch time (ts) by up to 36% and cure time (t90) by up to 35%. The carbon content in the shungite fillers had little influence on these parameters. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that replacing 5–10 wt% of CB with ShO or ShC improves the tensile strength of the rubber. The results of the flotation enrichment process enable the assessment of how these shungite fillers affect the properties of the composites for producing rubbers with specific characteristics. It was also found that substituting CB with ShO or ShC does not significantly affect the rubber’s resistance to standard oil-based media. The findings indicate that Kazakhstan’s shungite materials can be used as fillers in rubber to partially replace CB.

The antioxidant performance of a sterically hindered bisphenol antioxidant, 4,4'-bis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol), in model reactions of accelerated aging of carbon-chain polymers (polypropylene, isoprene rubber) was studied. This antioxidant was examined by differential scanning calorimetry and Wallace plasticity measurements in comparison with known commercial phenolic and amine stabilizers. High performance of 4,4'-bis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) as antioxidant was revealed.
