In this paper, we propose a composite multiple-mode orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (C-MM-OFDM-IM) scheme to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of OFDM-IM systems by extending the indexing to the energy and constellation domains. In C-MM-OFDM-IM, the information bits are mapped to not only the subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and modulation symbols, but also the energy allocation patterns (EAPs) and constellation activation patterns (CAPs). To cope with the practical situations, we propose a variant IM scheme named C-MM-OFDM-IM-II to build a new mapping rule between information bits and the increased CAPs, capable of further increasing the SE of C-MM-OFDM-IM. Upper-bounded bit error rate (BER) and lower-bounded achievable rate are both derived in closed-form to evaluate the performance of C-MM-OFDM-IM(-II). Moreover, we further propose two enhanced schemes, named generalized C-MM-OFDM-IM(-II) and C-MM-OFDM with in-phase/quadrature IM(-II), where the former jointly considers all SAPs, EAPs, CAPs and modulated symbols, while the latter expands the index implementation to the in-phase and quadrature constellation domains. Simulation results show that C-MM-OFDM-IM(-II) outperforms the conventional OFDM-IM related schemes, especially in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, and verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis for the upper-bounded BER and achievable rate.

In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient spatial modulation based molecular communication (SM-MC) scheme, in which a transmitted symbol is composed of two parts, i.e., a space derived symbol and a concentration derived symbol. The space symbol is transmitted by embedding the information into the index of a single activated transmitter nanomachine. The concentration symbol is drawn according to the conventional concentration shift keying (CSK) constellation. Benefiting from a single active transmitter during each symbol period, SMMC can avoid the inter-link interference problem existing in the current multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) based MC schemes, which hence enables low-complexity symbol detection and performance improvement. Correspondingly, we propose a low-complexity scheme, which first detects the space symbol by energy comparison, and then detects the concentration symbol by the maximum ratio combining assisted CSK demodulation. In this paper, we analyze the symbol error rate (SER) of the SM-MC and of its special case, namely the space shift keying based MC (SSK-MC), where only space symbol is transmitted and no CSK modulation is invoked. Finally, the analytical results are validated by computer simulations. Our studies demonstrate that both the SSK-MC and SM-MC are capable of achieving better SER performance than the conventional MIMO-MC and single-input single-output based MC, when given the same symbol rate.

Molecular Communication (MC) is a promising micro-scale technology that enables wireless connectivity in electromagnetically challenged conditions. The signal processing approaches in MC are different from conventional wireless communications as molecular signals suffer from severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) and signal-dependent counting noise due to the stochastic diffusion process of the information molecules. One of the main challenges in MC is the high computational complexity of the existing time-domain ISI mitigation schemes that display a third-order polynomial or even exponential growth with the ISI length, which is further exasperated under the high symbol rate case. For the first time, we develop a frequency-domain equalization (FDE) with lower complexity, capable of achieving independence from the ISI effects. This innovation is grounded in our characterization of the channel frequency response of diffusion signals, facilitating the design of receiver sampling strategies. However, the perfect counting noise power is unavailable in the optimal minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. We address this issue by exploiting the statistical information of the transmit signal and decision feedback for noise power estimation, designing novel MMSE equalizers with low complexity. The FDE for MC is successfully developed with its immunity to ISI effects, and its signal processing cost has only a logarithmic growth with symbol length in each block.

A generalized molecular-shift keying (GMoSK) modulation scheme is proposed for supporting diffusive molecular communication (DMC). Instead of activating one type of molecules in the traditional molecule shift keying (MoSK) modulation, GMoSK simultaneously activates several types of molecules, with the objective to increase data rate and the potential to further mitigate inter-symbol interference (ISI) beyond MoSK. For signal detection in the GMoSK-modulated DMC (GMoSK-DMC) systems, we first derive a symbol-based idealized maximum likelihood (IML) detector, from which we then deduce two practical detection schemes, namely, the zero-level decision feedback maximum likelihood (ZDF/ML) detector and the one-level decision feedback maximum likelihood (1DF/ML) detector. The error performance of the GMoSK-DMC systems with the IML-and ZDF/ML-detectors is mathematically analyzed. Furthermore, the error performance of the GMoSK-DMC systems with our proposed detection schemes is investigated and compared, which is also compared with that of the DMC systems employing the legacy MoSK modulation, the binary concentration shift keying (BCSK) modulation, the depleted MoSK (D-MoSK) modulation, and the Molecule-as-a-Frame (MaaF) modulation. Our studies and performance results demonstrate that GMoSK has the potential to achieve the performance beyond the above four modulation schemes, and employs the merit of high-flexibility for attaining relatively high data rate and also for ISI mitigation.

Molecular communication (MC) via diffusion is envisioned to be a new paradigm for information exchange in the future nanonetworks. However, the strong inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by the diffusion channel significantly deteriorates the performance of MC systems. To this end, we propose a novel modulation technique to reduce the ISI effect, termed as molecular type permutation shift keying (MTPSK), which encodes information on the permutations of multiple types of molecules. We design a Genie-aided maximum-likelihood detector and a conventional maximum-likelihood detector, and analyze their performance in terms of bit error rate (BER). Aiming at lower computational complexity, we further design a low-complexity maximum-likelihood detector using a Viterbi-like algorithm with compromised error performance. BER simulation results corroborate that the proposed MTPSK can outperform the prevailing modulation schemes for MC, including molecular shift keying (MoSK), concentration shift keying, depleted MoSK, and pulse position modulation.

In this paper, we propose a two-layer heterogeneous network to realize the remote monitoring and advanced warning for infectious diseases spread by airborne pathogens, whose detection can be considered as a binary detection problem. To intuitively study the detection process, we abstract it as a molecular communication via diffusion (MCvD) model and uncover that one of the key factors to impact the detection performance is inter-symbol interference (ISI), i.e., the viral aerosol from other biological entities. Therefore, overcoming ISI is imperative to ensure reliable detection. In the abstracted MCvD model, the detection performance can be described by the bit error rate (BER) performance. Following this assumption, we propose to optimize the detection interval to minimize the impact of ISI while ensuring the accurate detection of the transmitted information symbol, which is suitable for both the absorbing and passive receivers. For tractability, based on the signal-to-interference difference (SID) and signal-to-interference-and-noise amplitude ratio (SINAR), we design a modified-SINAR (mSINAR) to measure BER performance for the MCvD system with a variable detection interval. Besides, we derive the optimal detection interval in closed form. Using simulation results, we show that in terms of BER, our proposed mSINAR scheme is superior to the competitive schemes, and performs similarly to the scheme with optimal intervals determined by exhaustive search.
