Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the intention of using fitness app made available by the fitness centre to its members and their relationship with overall customer satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach The present study uses the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) as the base model. All the hypothesised relationships were tested through partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), in a quantitative study with data from 1,676 fitness consumers from Portugal. Findings The results support the ability of UTAUT2 in predicting the customer´s intention to use the fitness app. Performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation and habit have a positive impact on behavioural intentions to use the fitness app. Performance expectancy and habit have the strongest relationships. Behavioural intentions are positively related both to the usage behaviour of the fitness app and to overall customer satisfaction. Practical implications The results of this study present a strong contribution for fitness centre managers, since it highlights the importance of using these apps as a way to increase customer satisfaction, increasing retention levels. Originality/value This study is paramount as regards to examine the behavioural intention to use the fitness apps that the fitness centres make available to their members using UTAUT2 model.

Today’s society demands ethical and people-oriented management from companies. In this context, servant leadership represents a key element due to its influence on the organization’s well-being and proper functioning, both at the individual level (employees) and the global level (team). This research analyzes servant leadership’s influence on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and how it promotes its efficiency through its two dimensions (OCB towards the employees and OCB towards the organization). Thus, data has been collected from both managers and employees of 53 fitness centers belonging to four chains in Spain. The results reveal a significant direct influence of servant leadership on OCB and direct and indirect effects through employee’s self-efficacy and job satisfaction. A set of managerial implications and future research lines are suggested after discussing the results, while an endogeneity test is illustrated.

The fitness sector has always been linked to the analysis of the loyalty of its consumers. Different studies have shown the importance of sports service and human resources for greater customer loyalty. However, few works have studied how the physical environment or servicescape influences the behavior of consumers in fitness centers based on gender and age. Therefore, the objective of the study was to analyze the relationship between servicescape and the loyalty of fitness center consumers, analyzing through the Importance-Performance Matrix Analysis (IPMA) what the aspects to improve according to gender and age are. The sample was 10,368 fitness center customers (5864 women and 4504 men). After the IPMA, it was concluded that the main improvement margins in general in fitness centers were the equipment and the facility condition, and the facility layout. In turn, in relation to gender and age, the aspects with room for improvement were to a greater extent for equipment and facility condition in women over 21 years of age, and in facility layout for women between 21 and 40 years old and 51–60 years old. Regarding men, the aspects with the highest performance margins were the equipment and facility condition in all the age groups, the facility layout in men up to 50 years old, and the signage in men up to 40 years old and from 51 to 60 years old.

This study explores and examines the relationship between the success of Research and Development (R&D) consortia and the factors that determine this success. Most studies of R&D consortium success are based on a set of observable variables as antecedents of this success. In our study, we recognise the complexity of the problem and use latent variables as a set of weighted observable variables, rather than classical variables. Empirical insights are provided by applying a second-generation technique, namely the PLS-SEM algorithm, to analyse the data gathered from R&D consortia in Spain. The results demonstrate the existence of constructs (partner attributes, alliance attributes, environment attributes and leadership) that encompass the determinant factors for success, and also show that the attributes of the partners and the characteristics of the project alliances exert a positive influence on the success of the joint R&D project.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the occurrence of terms to identify the relevant topics and then to investigate the area (based on topics) of hospitality services that is highly associated with relationship quality. This research represents an opportunity to fill the gap in the current literature, and clarify the understanding of guests’ affective states by evaluating all aspects of their relationship with a hotel. Design/methodology/approach This research focuses on natural opinions upon which machine-learning algorithms can be executed: text summarization, sentiment analysis and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). Our data set contains 47,172 reviews of 33 hotels located in Las Vegas, and registered with Yelp. A component-based structural equation modeling (partial least squares (PLS)) is applied, with a dual – exploratory and predictive – purpose. Findings To maintain a truly loyal relationship and to achieve competitive success, hospitality managers must take into account both tangible and intangible features when allocating their marketing efforts to satisfaction-, trust- and commitment-based cues. On the other hand, the application of the PLS predict algorithm demonstrates the predictive performance (out-of-sample prediction) of our model that supports its ability to predict new and accurate values for individual cases when further samples are added. Originality/value LDA and PLS produce relevant informative summaries of corpora, and confirm and address more specifically the results of the previous literature concerning relationship quality. Our results are more reliable and accurate (providing insights not indicated in guests’ ratings into how hotels can improve their services) than prior statistical results based on limited sample data and on numerical satisfaction ratings alone.

PurposeStructural equation modelling (SEM) has been defined as the combination of latent variables and structural relationships. The partial least squares SEM (PLS-SEM) is used to estimate complex cause-effect relationship models with latent variables as the most salient research methods across a variety of disciplines, including knowledge management (KM). Following the path initiated by different domains in business research, this paper aims to examine how PLS-SEM has been applied in KM research, also providing some new guidelines how to improve PLS-SEM report analysis.Design/methodology/approachTo ensure an objective way to analyse relevant works in the field of KM, this study conducted a systematic literature review of 63 publications in three SSCI-indexed and specific KM journals between 2015 and 2017.FindingsOur results show that over the past three years, a significant amount of KM works has empirically used PLS-SEM. The findings also suggest that in light of recent developments of PLS-SEM reporting, some common misconceptions among KM researchers occurred mainly related to the reasons for using PLS-SEM, the purposes of PLS-SEM analysis, data characteristics, model characteristics and the evaluation of the structural models.Originality/valueThis study contributes to that vast KM literature by documenting the PLS-SEM-related problems and misconceptions. Therefore, it will shed light for better reports in PLS-SEM studies in the KM field.

Disinformation and misconceptions based on unverified information (e.g., hoaxes, exaggerations, or gossip) is what is called “counter-knowledge”. Knowledge management corridors establish a framework for relationships between the external and internal knowledge processes to enhance organisational performance. This study proposes three knowledge management processes (i.e., realised absorptive capacity, organisational memory, and knowledge application) as those that constitute such critical corridors. The analysis of the role of uncontrolled counter-knowledge in the relationship between those knowledge management processes is the value of this paper. Hypotheses were tested using a SEM approach based on composites (PLS-SEM). Data were collected from 151 branch-office managers belonging to the Spanish banking industry. The results show that counter-knowledge is only related to realised absorptive capacity and knowledge application, being the influence negative. The link between counter-knowledge and the other two constructs (i.e., organisational memory and organisational performance) provides surprising results being statistically insignificant.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the impact and predictive capacity of organizational culture on both customer loyalty and organizational performance in health clubs using data from managers and customers of health clubs in Spain. Design/methodology/approach A total of 101 managers were asked to measure organizational culture and organizational performance and 2,931 customers were asked to indicate their customer loyalty. The proposed hypotheses were tested and their predictability assessed through PLS-SEM. A composite concept was adopted to analyze the relationships between the different constructs and their indicators. Findings The findings suggest that organizational culture has a positive relationship with both customer loyalty and organizational performance. The four main dimensions of organizational culture that influence this relationship are, in order of significance, organizational presence, formalization, atmosphere and service-equipment. The authors’ model has a very good predictive power for both dependent variables. Originality/value Customer loyalty is an aspect of health clubs that can be improved. This study highlights the importance of creating a strong organizational culture in health clubs, as it enhances and predicts customer loyalty and organizational performance. Its predictability has already been tested with samples of managers and customers, with the analysis being performed from the perspective of the organization’s management and customer perceptions. This study also contributes to the field of sport management, using a predictive PLS-SEM technique.

Nowadays, companies need to absorb new knowledge from external sources to grasp environmental issues. However, the internal mechanisms through which external knowledge is turned into green innovations remain scarcely addressed. Hence, this paper aims to investigate the relationships between the two dimensions of absorptive capacity (potential and realized) with green products and process innovation performance. This study contributes to the literature by disentangling how companies need to acquire, assimilate, transform and exploit external environmental knowledge to develop green innovations. To this aim, this empirical study is based on a sample shaped by 112 firms belonging to the Spanish automotive components manufacturing sector. The results provide evidence to show that potential and realized absorptive capacities are positively related to both green product innovation performance and green process innovation performance.

This study explores the links between knowledge base, relationship learning, and green innovation performance within a coopetitive framework. We posit that green innovation is directly influenced by a broad and deep knowledge base. We also hypothesize that the knowledge base–green innovation performance link is positively mediated by relationship learning (indirect effect). These hypotheses were empirically tested using consistent partial least squares path modeling. A sample of 112 firms from the Spanish automotive components manufacturing sector was used. The mediating effect of relationship learning on the knowledge base–green innovation performance link was observed to be positive and significant. Therefore, managers should build strong relations with stakeholders to assimilate, transfer, and adapt new knowledge and thus enhance green innovation performance.

Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) is one of the options used to analyze mediation effects. Over the past few years, the methods for testing mediation have become more sophisticated. However, many researchers continue to use outdated methods to test mediation effects in PLS-SEM, which can lead to erroneous results in some cases. One reason for the use of outdated methods is that PLS-SEM tutorials do not draw on the newest statistical findings. This chapter illustrates how to perform modern procedures in PLS-SEM by challenging the conventional approach to mediation analysis and providing better alternatives. These novel methods offer a wide range of testing options (e.g., multiple mediators) that go beyond simple mediation analysis alternatives, helping researchers to discuss their studies in a more accurate way. This chapter seeks to illustrate and help to operationalize the mediation in Nitzl et al.’s (Indus Manag Data Syst 116:1849–1864, 2016) paper about mediation in PLS, published in Industrial Management & Data Systems, with examples of two potential mediations: a multiple mediation with two mediators and a multistep multiple mediation.

The topic of green innovation (GI) has increasingly attained organizational relevance due to its contribution to the satisfaction of environmental needs while concurrently enabling companies to differentiate themselves from their competitors, and hence attain sustainable competitive advantages. In this context, we conducted a detailed analysis of 618 papers on green innovation from the Web of Science (WoS) database for the 1971–2015 period. This paper develops a bibliometric analysis with the aim of assessing the key papers in the field and identifying the most substantive contributions to the literature. This study presents the following findings: (i) the chronological development of the discipline; (ii) the research trends and popular issues in this field; (iii) the antecedent variables acting as key drivers of GI in these studies; and (iv) the main outcomes of GI. Therefore, this paper provides the past, the present and the potential future of this specific topic and serves as an orientation and guide for researchers who are new to the topic of GI; it also enhances their knowledge concerning which journals, authors and articles they may consult while creating their theoretical framework or designing future research models.

Indirect or mediated effects constitute a type of relationship between constructs that often occurs in partial least squares structural equation models (PLS-SEM). Over the past few years, the methods for testing mediation have become more sophisticated. However, many researchers continue to use outdated methods to test mediation effects in PLS-SEM, which can lead to erroneous results. One reason for the use of outdated methods or even ignoring it is that no systematic tutorials on PLS-SEM exist that draw on the newest statistical findings. This study illustrates the state-of-the-art use of mediation analysis in the context of PLS-SEM. It facilitates the adoption of modern procedures in PLS-SEM by challenging the conventional approach to mediation analysis and providing alternatives that are more accurate. In addition, we propose a decision tree and classification of mediation effects. Our recommended approach offers a wide range of testing options that go beyond simple mediation analysis alternatives, helping researchers discuss their studies in a more accurate way.

Knowledge has become the main competitive tool for firms. Just as knowledge is considered as the most important strategic resource, knowledge management (KM) is considered to be critical to a firm’s success. Several attempts have been undertaken to identify and define the different KM processes. From the literature review, four key dimensions stand out as affecting KM processes: knowledge creation, knowledge transfer, knowledge storage/retrieval, and knowledge application. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the KM and value literature by determining the importance of the different processes of KM for increasing value creation and value capture in firms. The context for the research hypotheses is the Spanish banking industry in 2010. The results support a positive relationship between KM and value creation, and between value creation and value capture.

Environmental management and green practices have a narrow linkage with firm innovativeness. Companies that are pioneers in green innovation strategies might reach and sustain competitive advantages. Thus, successful green innovation performance (GIP) helps firms to achieve greater efficiency as well as to establish and strengthen their core competences. This study focuses on the dynamic capabilities (DC) and ordinary capabilities (OC) like antecedents of GIP, and the relationship between these constructs. Proposing a mediation model to analyze both direct and indirect relationships, this study applies variance-based structural equation modeling through a partial least squares to a sample of 112 firms from the Spanish automotive components' manufacturing sector. The results suggest that both the direct effect and indirect effect of capabilities (DC and OC) on GIP are positive and significant, and improve the prediction of firm's GIP. Furthermore, the structural model supports that DC influence GIP by reconfiguring relationship-learning capabilities (a type of OC).
