The Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) is paramount in elevating operational efficiency, driving cost reductions, and enhancing customer satisfaction. It is a renowned challenge with diverse real-world applications, where the core objective is determining the most efficient routes for a fleet of vehicles. This research introduces a cutting-edge Hybrid Genetic Algorithm-Solomon Insertion Heuristic (HGA-SIH) solution, reinforced by the powerful Solomon Insertion constructive heuristic to solve the VRPTW as an NP-hard problem. The performance of the proposed HGA-SIH is validated against Solomon’s VRPTW benchmark instances. The results showcase the outstanding performance of HGA, achieving Best-Known Solutions (BKS) for 11 instances and enhancing BKS solutions in one instance. Experimental findings validate that HGA-SIH consistently delivers results on par with or surpasses those obtained by several cutting-edge algorithms when evaluated based on various solution quality metrics. HGA-SIH consistently excels in efficiently managing the number of vehicles while minimizing travel distances, resulting in slight deviations from BKS that remain within practical limits. The research highlights the adaptability and efficacy of HGA-SIH in addressing a wide range of VRPTW scenarios, thereby making substantial contributions to logistics and supply chain optimization.

Water supply and demand management (WSDM) is essential for developing sustainable cities and societies. WSDM is only effective when tackled from the perspective of a holistic system understanding that considers social, environmental, hydrological, and economic (SEHEc) sub-systems. System dynamics modeling (SDM) is recommended by water resource researchers as it models the biophysical and socio-economic systems simultaneously. This study presents a comprehensive literature review of SDM applications in sustainable WSDM. The reviewed articles were methodologically analyzed considering SEHEc sub-systems and the type of modeling approach used. This study revealed that problem conceptualization using the causal loop diagram (CLD) was performed in only 58% of the studies. Moreover, 70% of the reviewed articles used the stock flow diagram (SFD) to perform a quantitative system analysis. Furthermore, stakeholder engagement plays a significant role in understanding the core issues and divergent views and needs of users, but it was incorporated by only 36% of the studies. Although climate change significantly affects water management strategies, only 51% of the reviewed articles considered it. Although the scenario analysis is supported by simulation models, they further require the optimization models to yield optimal key parameter values. One noticeable finding is that only 12% of the articles used quantitative models to complement SDM for the decision-making process. The models included agent-based modeling (ABM), Bayesian networking (BN), analytical hierarchy approach (AHP), and simulation optimization multi-objective optimization (MOO). The solution approaches included the genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The key findings for the sustainable development of water resources included the per capita water reduction, water conservation through public awareness campaigns, the use of treated wastewater, the adoption of efficient irrigation practices including drip irrigation, the cultivation of low-water-consuming crops in water-stressed regions, and regulations to control the overexploitation of groundwater. In conclusion, it is established that SDM is an effective tool for devising strategies that enable sustainable water supply and demand management.

This study proposes a methodology for the oil and gas businesses to keep their production plant productive with a minimum investment in carrying maintenance, repair, and operating inventory planning. The goal is to assist the exploration and production companies in minimizing the investment in keeping maintenance, repair, and operating (MRO) inventory for improving production plant uptime. The MRO inventory is the most expensive asset and it requires substantial investment. It helps in keeping the oil and gas production plant productive by performing planned and unplanned maintenance activities. A (Q, r) model with a stock-out and backorder cost approach is combined with a continuous inventory review policy for the analysis of class A items of oil and gas production plant MRO inventory. The class A items are identified through popular ABC analysis based on annual dollar volume. The demand for the inventory is modeled through Poisson distribution with consideration of constant lead time. The (Q, r) model in both stock-out cost and backorder cost approaches assigned higher order frequency and lower service level to low annual demand and highly expensive items. The stock-out cost approach shows an 8.88% increase in the average service level and a 56.9% decrease in the company average inventory investment. The backorder cost approach results in a 7.77% increase in average service level and a 57% decrease in average inventory investment in contrast to the company’s existing inventory management system. The results have a direct impact on increasing plant uptime and productivity and reducing company maintenance cost through properly managing maintenance stock. The analysis is carried out on the oil and gas production plant’s MRO inventory data, but it can be applied to other companies’ inventory data as well. All the results reflected in this research are based on the inventory ordering policy of two orders per year. The inventory ordering frequency per year may be other than two orders per year depending on the type of organization.

Closed-loop supply chain networks are gaining research popularity due to environmental, economic and social concerns. Such networks are primarily designed to overcome carbon footprints and to retrieve end of life products from customers. This study considers a multi echelon closed-loop supply chain in the presence of machine disruption. A multi-objective model is presented to optimize the total cost, the total time and emissions in a closed-loop supply chain network. The aim is to analyze the trade-off between the objectives of cost, time, and emissions and how these decisions are impacted by the selection of different available machines. A number of solution approaches are tested on a case study from the tire industry. The results suggest the improved performance of the hybrid heuristic and the importance of controlling disruption in a closed-loop supply chain network. Furthermore, there is a trade-off between the different objective functions which can help the decision maker to choose a particular solution according to the preference of an organization. Finally, conclusion and future research avenues are provided.

This study investigates the no-wait flow shop scheduling problem and proposes a hybrid (HES-IG) algorithm that utilizes makespan as the objective function. To address the complexity of this NP-hard problem, the HES-IG algorithm combines evolution strategies (ES) and iterated greedy (IG) algorithm, as hybridizing algorithms helps different algorithms mitigate their weaknesses and leverage their respective strengths. The ES algorithm begins with a random initial solution and uses an insertion mutation to optimize the solution. Reproduction is carried out using (1 + 5)-ES, generating five offspring from one parent randomly. The selection process employs (µ + λ)-ES, allowing excellent parent solutions to survive multiple generations until a better offspring surpasses them. The IG algorithm’s straightforward search mechanism aids in further improving the solution and avoiding local minima. The destruction operator randomly removes d-jobs, which are then inserted one by one using a construction operator. The local search operator employs a single insertion approach, while the acceptance–rejection criteria are based on a constant temperature. Parameters of both ES and IG algorithms are calibrated using the Multifactor analysis of variance technique. The performance of the HES-IG algorithm is calibrated with other algorithms using the Wilcoxon signed test. The HES-IG algorithm is tested on 21 Nos. Reeves and 30 Nos. Taillard benchmark problems. The HES-IG algorithm has found 15 lower bound values for Reeves benchmark problems. Similarly, the HES-IG algorithm has found 30 lower bound values for the Taillard benchmark problems. Computational results indicate that the HES-IG algorithm outperforms other available techniques in the literature for all problem sizes.
