Pumped storage hydropower plants are renewable energy systems that are effective in saving energy and solving electricity peak-on shortage. Seawater pumped storage hydropower plants are a novel type of pumped storage hydropower plant specifically supplying electric power for ocean islands with the support of solar energy and wind energy. Compared with traditional pumped storage hydropower plants that are constructed on the mainland, seawater pumped storage hydropower plants should take the influence of the complex marine environment, such as extreme waves and winds, into consideration. Taking the characteristics of waves near islands in the East China Sea as an example, we explored the transient hydraulic characteristics in the draft tube of a pump turbine under wave disturbance using a sliding grid interface and the detached eddy simulation (DES) turbulence model. By analyzing the characteristics of unsteady flow in the draft tube, the vortex characteristics under the Q criterion, the frequency characteristics of the pressure pulsation, the evolution law of the internal fluid, and the propagation law of the pressure pulsation were explored. For the situation without wave disturbance, an obvious eccentric vortex in the straight cone section of the draft tube was observed in the case where the opening of the guide vane was small. With the increase in the opening of the guide vane, the eccentric vortex gradually dissipated. For the situation with wave disturbance, the main frequency of the draft tube equaled the frequency of the wave disturbance, the maximum pressure pulsation at the selected monitoring points increased 5 to 15 times, and the superposition of the wave pressure pulsation signals and the draft tube pressure pulsation produced more low-frequency, high-amplitude pressure pulsation signals. Even though the pressure pulsation frequency spectrum varied a lot, the frequency domain of the pressure pulsation without wave disturbance still existed. In addition, the wave disturbance merely varied with the pressure of the draft tube. The influence of wave disturbance on the pressure distribution in the draft tube was relatively small. The results can provide a reference for the operation of seawater pumped storage hydropower plants.

As an important working condition in water conveyance projects, the water filling process of pipelines is a complex hydraulic transition process involving water–air two-phase flow with sharp pressure changes that can easily cause pipeline damage. In light of the complex water–air two-phase flow during pipeline water filling, this study explores the water filling process of right-angle elbow pressure pipelines using CFD numerical simulations and physical model experiments, analyzing changes in water phase volume fraction, water-gas two-phase flow patterns, and hydraulic parameters in the pipeline under low flow rate conditions of 0.6 m/s and high flow rate conditions of 1.5 m/s. Results show that under low flow rate conditions, there is more local trapped gas at the top of the pipeline, causing negative pressure at local high points in the pipeline and forming a vacuum. Under high velocity conditions, water-gas two-phase flow changes more frequently in the pipeline, with a large number of bubbles collapsing at the top, resulting in large fluctuations in pipeline pressure. Finally, through physical experiments, the main flow patterns during water filling in right-angle elbows are verified and analyzed. These results have certain reference significance for formulating safe and efficient water filling velocity schemes for pressurized pipelines.

Considering the issues of water scarcity, water environment deterioration, and unreasonable allocation of water resources in the urban area of the Yellow River Basin, this paper introduces the human–water harmony theory to the allocation of regional water resources. Based on an analysis of the structural characteristics of the regional water resource system, the harmonious water resource allocation (HWRA) model—which includes three sub-systems (i.e., the water service system, ecological environmental system, and economic and social system)—is established. In addition, considering the uncertain factors in the HWRA model, the inexact fuzzy multi-objective programming (IFMOP) method is used to solve the model, aiming at achieving the minimum amount of regional water scarcity, the minimum amount of sewage discharge, and the maximum total economic benefit. A case study of water resource allocation of Binzhou, a city located in the Yellow River Basin, is conducted to validate the model. The model solution results show that the water resource system in Binzhou in 2025 and 2035 could be optimized after harmonious allocation, especially in terms of the water service and ecological environmental systems. Compared with the optimal water resource allocation (OWRA) model, the HWRA model has a more scientific water supply structure, and a smaller amount of sewage discharge. The HWRA model solves the variables using an interval number, so it can flexibly and scientifically reflect the decision-making process.

Water scarcity is an urgent issue for social and economic development in arid and semi-arid areas. Constructing long-distance pressurized water supply projects is a commonly used measure to solve water scarcity problems in these areas. With the increasing complexity of long-distance pressurized water supply projects, the issue of water hammer protection has become more and more prominent. Air chambers have been widely used to solve the issue of water hammer accidents. In this paper, we propose a novel air chamber with an adjustable central standpipe, and then analyze the hydraulic performance, as well as the water hammer protection characteristics, of the proposed novel air chamber using numerical simulations. The influences of the inner length, the diameter of the central standpipe, and the diameter of the bottom connecting pipe on the hydraulic performance of the air chamber are also studied. Then, the optimization of the relevant parameters of the central standpipe for the proposed air chamber is conducted. In addition, the volumes of the proposed air chamber and conventional air chambers are compared.

The stable operation of a variable frequency pump is of great importance to the management of a water supply project. Analyzing the operation performance based on monitoring data is necessary for maintaining the stable operation of a variable frequency pump. Several sensors are installed at six monitoring points on the pump to collect signals including vibration velocity, vibration acceleration and vibration displacement. Monitoring signals are preprocessed by smoothing, adjusting waveform trend and filtering on the basis of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Then, the vibration features are extracted by power spectrum analysis and cepstrum analysis methods. According to the extracted features, the vibration law and actual operation performance of a variable frequency pump under different operating conditions are analyzed. Results indicate that the vibration amplitude of the pump varies sharply under the operating conditions of [15 Hz, 20 Hz] and [30 Hz, 35 Hz]. The operating condition of [0 Hz, 15 Hz] is the restricted operating area of the pump. The vibration and noise continue increasing under the operating conditions of [35 Hz, 50 Hz] and reach the maximum values at 50 Hz. Therefore, the optimal operating is within the range of [20 Hz, 30 Hz]. Finally, by analyzing the critical values of the operating conditions, the fault diagnosis and the evaluation of the operating status are conducted.
