The global significance of fluoride and nitrate contamination in coastal areas cannot be overstated, as these contaminants pose critical environmental and public health challenges across the world. Water quality is an essential component in sustaining environmental health. This integrated study aimed to assess indexical and spatial water quality, potential contamination sources, and health risks associated with groundwater resources in Al-Hassa, Saudi Arabia. Groundwater samples were tested using standard methods. The physiochemical results indicated overall groundwater pollution. This study addresses the critical issue of drinking water resource suitability assessment by introducing an innovative approach based on the pollution index of groundwater (PIG). Focusing on the eastern region of Saudi Arabia, where water resource management is of paramount importance, we employed advanced machine learning (ML) models to forecast groundwater suitability using several combinations (C1 = EC + Na + Mg + Cl, C2 = TDS + TA + HCO3 + K + Ca, and C3 = SO4 + pH + NO3 + F + Turb). Six ML models, including random forest (RF), decision trees (DT), XgBoost, CatBoost, linear regression, and support vector machines (SVM), were utilized to predict groundwater quality. These models, based on several performance criteria (MAPE, MAE, MSE, and DC), offer valuable insights into the complex relationships governing groundwater pollution with an accuracy of more than 90%. To enhance the transparency and interpretability of the ML models, we incorporated the local interpretable model-agnostic explanation method, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). SHAP allows us to interpret the prediction-making process of otherwise opaque black-box models. We believe that the integration of ML models and SHAP-based explainability offers a promising avenue for sustainable water resource management in Saudi Arabia and can serve as a model for addressing similar challenges worldwide. By bridging the gap between complex data-driven predictions and actionable insights, this study contributes to the advancement of environmental stewardship and water security in the region.

The deadly coronavirus virus (COVID‐19) was confirmed as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2019. It is important to identify suspected patients as early as possible in order to control the spread of the virus, improve the efficacy of medical treatment, and, as a result, lower the mortality rate. The adopted method of detecting COVID‐19 is the reverse‐transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR), the process is affected by a scarcity of RT‐PCR kits as well as its complexities. Medical imaging using machine learning and deep learning has proved to be one of the most efficient methods of detecting respiratory diseases, but to train machine learning features needs to be extracted manually, and in deep learning, efficiency is affected by deep learning architecture and low data. In this study, handcrafted local binary pattern (LBP) and automatic seven deep learning models extracted features were used to train support vector machines (SVM) and K‐nearest neighbour (KNN) classifiers, to improve the performance of the classifier, a concatenated LBP and deep learning feature was proposed to train the KNN and SVM, based on the performance criteria, the models VGG‐19 + LBP achieved the highest accuracy of 99.4%. The SVM and KNN classifiers trained on the hybrid feature outperform the state of the art model. This shows that the proposed feature can improve the performance of the classifiers in detecting COVID‐19.

Having accurate and effective wind energy forecasting that can be easily incorporated into smart networks is important. Appropriate planning and energy generation predictions are necessary for these infrastructures. The production of wind energy is linked to instability and unpredictability. Wind energy forecasting has traditionally been performed using statistical models, but with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), research indicates that AI is more accurate than the statical technique. In this study, the nominal power of six wind farms in China was predicted using Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KAN) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) models. KAN as an alternative to the conventional MLP, has the ability to handle problems with scalability, vanishing gradients, and interpretability associated with MLP. The KAN uses learnable B-Spline as activation functions prompting it to address the issues of the MLP. We employed the Radial Basis Function (RBF) with Gaussian kernels to approximate the 3-order B-spline basis. In most deep learning models stochastic gradient-based optimization algorithms such as Adaptive Moment Estimation (ADAM) and Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) optimizer are mostly employed, a quasi-Newton optimization technique Limited-memory Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno algorithm LBFGS was employed in this work to approximate the Hessian matrix and estimate the parameter space's curvature. Also, in the preprocessing of the data, the Interquartile Range (IQR) technique is used to handle outliers and a clustering-based K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) imputer to handle missing values. Based on different sites, the KAN-LBFGS shows superior performance based on the performance evaluation metrics with site 5 achieving MSE of 0.0039, RMSE of 0.0622, MAE of 0.0352, and DC of 0.9468. The study highlights the importance of the model’s architecture, preprocessing and optimization techniques.

Tuberculosis (TB) a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) poses a significant threat to human life, and current BCG vaccinations only provide sporadic protection, therefore there is a need for developing efficient vaccines. Numerous immunoinformatic methods have been utilized previously, here for the first time a deep learning framework based on Deconvolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (DCNN-BiLSTM) was used to predict Mtb Multiepitope vaccine (MtbMEV) subunits against six Mtb H37Rv proteins. The trained model was used to design MEV within a few minutes against TB better than other machine learning models with 99.5% accuracy. The MEV has good antigenicity, and physiochemical properties, and is thermostable, soluble, and hydrophilic. The vaccine's BLAST search ruled out the possibility of autoimmune reactions. The secondary structure analysis revealed 87% coil, 10% beta, and 2% alpha helix, while the tertiary structure was highly upgraded after refinement. Molecular docking with TLR3 and TLR4 receptors showed good binding, indicating high immune reactions. Immune response simulation confirmed the generation of innate and adaptive responses. In-silico cloning revealed the vaccine is highly expressed in E. coli. The results can be further experimentally verified using various analyses to establish a candidate vaccine for future clinical trials.

Accidents have contributed a lot to the loss of lives of motorists and serious damage to vehicles around the globe. Potholes are the major cause of these accidents. It is very important to build a model that will help in recognizing these potholes on vehicles. Several object detection models based on deep learning and computer vision were developed to detect these potholes. It is very important to develop a lightweight model with high accuracy and detection speed. In this study, we employed a Mask RCNN model with ResNet-50 and MobileNetv1 as the backbone to improve detection, and also compared the performance of the proposed Mask RCNN based on original training images and the images that were filtered using a Gaussian smoothing filter. It was observed that the ResNet trained on Gaussian filtered images outperformed all the employed models.

Smart tourism is a developing industry, and numerous nations are planning to establish smart cities in which technology is employed to make life easier and link nearly everything. Many researchers have created object detectors; however, there is a demand for lightweight versions that can fit into smartphones and other edge devices. The goal of this research is to demonstrate the notion of employing a mobile application that can detect statues efficiently on mobile applications, and also improve the performance of the models by employing the Gaussian Smoothing Filter (GSF). In this study, three object detection models, EfficientDet—D0, EfficientDet—D2 and EfficientDet—D4, were trained on original and smoothened images; moreover, their performance was compared to find a model efficient detection score that is easy to run on a mobile phone. EfficientDet—D4, trained on smoothened images, achieves a Mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.811, an mAP-50 of 1 and an mAP-75 of 0.90.
