This review examines advancements in Mars habitation technologies, emphasizing Earth-based analog missions and closed-loop life support systems critical for long-duration human presence on the Red Planet. The paper categorizes major simulation projects—including Biosphere 2, Yuegong 1 (Lunar Palace 1), SAM, MaMBA, and CHAPEA—and analyzes their contributions to habitat design, psychological resilience, and environmental control. Technological domains such as in situ resource utilization (ISRU), habitat automation, and extraterrestrial health care are evaluated with respect to current limitations and future scalability. Additionally, the paper explores regulatory, economic, and international cooperation aspects, highlighting their significance in enabling sustainable settlement. By integrating empirical data from terrestrial experiments and recent space initiatives, this review offers a comprehensive assessment of readiness and gaps in Mars habitation strategies.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a tracer of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and its concentration has gradually decreased with the reduction in VOC emissions in recent years, which puts forward higher requirements for the detection of trace HCHO. Therefore, a quantum cascade laser (QCL) with a central excitation wavelength of 5.68 μm was applied to detect the trace HCHO under an effective absorption optical pathlength of 67 m. An improved, dual-incidence multi-pass cell, with a simple structure and easy adjustment, was designed to further improve the absorption optical pathlength of the gas. The instrument detection sensitivity of 28 pptv (1σ) was achieved within a 40 s response time. The experimental results show that the developed HCHO detection system is almost unaffected by the cross interference of common atmospheric gases and the change of ambient humidity. Additionally, the instrument was successfully deployed in a field campaign, and it delivered results that correlated well with those of a commercial instrument based on continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (R2 = 0.967), which indicates that the instrument has a good ability to monitor ambient trace HCHO in unattended continuous operation for long periods of time.

As a cost-effective and versatile solution, small satellites are increasingly being considered for space exploration. However, one of the major challenges in deploying small satellites for high total impulse missions, particularly deep space exploration, lies in the propulsion system. These missions face strict constraints in terms of volume, mass, and power budgets. This paper proposes a potential solution to this issue through the design of a bipropellant MEMS thruster. Simulation results indicate that this type of thruster offers superior performance compared to the monopropellant propulsion systems typically used in small satellite missions. Specifically, the bipropellant MEMS thruster demonstrates enhanced specific impulse and thrust-to-weight ratio, making it a promising alternative for small satellite propulsion in high total impulse missions.

Wavelength modulation spectroscopy off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (WMS-OA-ICOS) is an in situ detection technique suitable for analyzing trace gases in the atmospheres, characterized by its high sensitivity and ease of integration. However, in current practical applications, the design and optimization of WMS-OA-ICOS systems primarily rely on empirical knowledge, lacking systematic quantitative methodologies. To address this limitation, this study conducts comprehensive modeling and simulation research on WMS-OA-ICOS spectroscopy, proposing a novel modeling approach. The spot distribution simulation results obtained from the self-developed model are validated against those generated using Tracepro. Furthermore, based on the self-developed model, an in-depth investigation is conducted into the effects of cavity length tolerance, beam waist matching, modulation depth, and laser linewidth on signal quality. The findings provide valuable insights for designing and optimizing miniaturized systems with high signal-to-noise ratios.
