Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are considered an important solution for reducing carbon emissions. Safety is the most important prerequisite for a new fuel to be used in an aero-engine. As a special component in aero-engines, fuel is required to comply with both airworthiness and technical standards. These two types of standard work together to guide SAF development. In this paper, the SAF safety issues related to aero-engines are first analyzed. Subsequently, SAF-related standard systems are analyzed in detail, and the different safety responsibilities of airworthiness authorities and industry associations are explained. Moreover, the relationships between airworthiness and technical standards are determined from the perspective of actual SAF certification. Furthermore, the revision of the standards is reviewed to summarize the historical evolution and outline the revision intention. Finally, the future SAF certification standards are discussed and prospected, including the blending ratio, property specifications, and testing equipment. According to the discussion, increased safety and fewer constraints are the principal objectives for the development of SAF standards. Analysis, review, and discussion of the SAF standards systems from an aero-engine safety perspective will contribute to the establishment of the next generation of standards to release the fuel potential and improve safety.

Blade tip clearance (BTC) measurement and active clearance control (ACC) are becoming crucial technologies in aero-engine health monitoring so as to improve the efficiency and reliability as well as to ensure timely maintenance. Eddy current sensor (ECS) offers an attractive option for BTC measurement due to its robustness, whereas current approaches have not considered two issues sufficiently. One is that BTC affects the response time of a measurement loop, the other is that ECS signal decays with increasing speed. This paper proposes a speed adjustment model (SAM) to deal with these issues in detail. SAM is trained using a nonlinear regression method from a dynamic training data set obtained by an experiment. The Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm is used to estimate SAM characteristic parameters. The quantitative relationship between the response time of ECS measurement loop and BTC, as well as the output signal and speed are obtained. A BTC measurement method (BTCMM) based on the SAM is proposed and a geometric constraint equation is constructed to assess the accuracy of BTC measurement. Experiment on a real-time BTC measurement during the running process for a micro turbojet engine is conducted to validate the BTCMM. It is desirable and significative to effectively improve BTC measurement accuracy and expand the range of applicable engine speed.

In the typical structure of a turboshaft aero-engine, the mass flow of the cooling air in the rotor-stator cavity is controlled by the inlet seal labyrinth. This study focused on the swirl flow and heat transfer characteristics in a rotor-stator cavity with considerations of the inlet seal thermal deformation effect. A numerical framework was established by integrating conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analysis and structural finite element method (FEM) analysis to clarify the two-way aero-thermo-elasto coupling interaction among elastic deformation, leakage flow, and heat transfer. Simulation results showed that the actual hot-running clearance was non-uniform along the axial direction due to the temperature gradient and inconsistent structural stiffness. Compared with the cold-built clearance (CC), the minimum tip clearance of the actual non-uniform hot-running clearance (ANHC) was reduced by 37–40%, which caused an increase of swirl ratio at the labyrinth outlet by 5.3–6.9%, a reduction of the Nusselt number by up to 69%. The nominal uniform hot-running clearance (NUHC) was defined as the average labyrinth tip clearance. The Nusselt number of the rotating disk under the ANHC was up to 81% smaller than that under the NUHC. Finally, a clearance compensation method was proposed to increase the coolant flow and decrease the metal temperature.

In advanced civil aero-engine, the gas exiting combustor typically features hot streak (HS) and swirl that affect the aerothermal performances of the high pressure (HP) nozzle guide vane (NGV). The purpose of this paper is to study the influences of HS on HP NGV aerothermal behaviors under swirl with various intensities. The numerical investigations were conducted on the first NGV of GE-E3 HP turbine. Four swirl intensities (|SN| = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) and two swirl orientations (positive and negative) were considered. The result indicates that the relative strengths between the swirl and its induced radial pressure gradient dominate the flow patterns on vane surfaces. Thus, the diverse streamlines distributions appear on the surfaces and the dominated factor on each surface does not vary with swirl intensity. The swirl redistributes the cold and hot fluid and thus generates the relatively hot oblique strip and cold region at the upstream of vane. The heat load on the vane that is not directly impinged by HS is dictated by the radial migration of the fluids originating from the regions aforementioned at |SN| = 0.25 and 0.50. However, at |SN| = 0.75, the transverse movement of HS due to the intense swirl causes additional thermal load. The heat load on the vane that faces HS is mainly determined by the radial migration of HS. The swirl alters the heat transfer distribution on vane surfaces remarkably. With positive swirl, the heat transfer coefficients at the lower span of suction side and pressure side are enhanced and weakened respectively. As expected, the opposite trends are observed in the negative swirl case. Swirl also affects boundary layer transition, and then affecting heat transfer. Positive and negative swirls both advance the transition on the suction side of vane directly impinged by the swirl, and with the increase of swirl intensity, transition onset shifts toward upstream.

Bump foil journal bearings (BFJBs) are widely used in the superchargers of aviation piston engines (APEs). This paper proposes a method to evaluate the operating state of superchargers by monitoring the bearing temperature. A numerical model with a repeating symmetrical structure in the axial direction is established based on a certain type of supercharger, which solves the temperature field of BFJBs with the non-isothermal Reynolds equation and energy equation. It can be used to analyze the effect of thermal expansion on lift-off speed and stop-contact speed. A new test rig and six various BFJBs were designed to check the temperature characteristics of the BFJBs with variable load and speed. By comparing the numerical results with the experimental results, it was shown that the air film temperature increased almost linearly with the increase in bearing load and speed. However, the temperature increase caused by the rotation speed was significantly greater than the load. The structural parameters of the BFJB affected the bearing support stiffness, which had a nonlinear effect on the lift-off speed and air film temperature. Therefore, the proposed method to evaluate the state of superchargers with BFJBs was effective. These thermal characteristics can be used to guide BFJB design and predict the life cycle of BFJBs.
