Information

Dr. Fátima Milhano dos Santos is a young Portuguese researcher specialized in clinical proteomics. She obtained her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Universidade da Beira Interior with the project "Human vitreous proteome in vitreoretinal diseases", supported by an FCT doctoral fellowship (SFRH/BD/112526/2015) under the supervision of professors Luís Passarinha and Cândida Tomaz (CICS-UBI, Covilhã, Portugal) and Dr. Alberto Paradela (CNB-CSIC, Madrid, Spain). This project aimed to analyze vitreous samples proteome to identify the pathological mechanisms underlying the progression of vitreoretinal diseases to a proliferative or neovascular etiology using several straightforward (gel-based and gel-free) proteomics approaches. From 2020-2023, she was a member of the Functional Proteomics Laboratory (CNB-CSIC) led by Dr. Fernando Corrales, where she consolidated her knowledge in the proteomics field. Her research experience in this laboratory was focused on proteomics analysis of biological fluids and cellular models in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This work was carried out within the scope of the “Global Health” Interdisciplinary Platform (PTI-CSIC) and was aligned with multidisciplinary initiatives such as the COVID-19 MS Coalition. Recently, she joined Cellular and Molecular Biology in Renal and Vascular Pathology Laboratory (IIS-Fundación Jiménez Díaz) led by Dr. Marta Ruiz-Ortega with a Sara Borrel contract (CD23/00049).
