In order to study and forecast extreme weather, a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the spatial and temporal relationship between Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV), predicted by Numerical Weather Predication (NWP) data, and precipitation, is necessary. The goal of this paper was to study the temporal and spatial relationship between PWV and precipitation during the so-called ‘July 20’ (18–21 July 2021) heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou. Firstly, the PWV data provided by 120 radiosonde stations uniformly distributed throughout the world, and two IGS stations in China, in 2020, was used to evaluate the accuracy of PWV estimation by ERA5 and MERRA-2 data, and the factors affecting the accuracy of NWP PWV were explored. Secondly, ERA5 PWV and the precipitation data of six meteorological stations were used to qualitatively analyze the relationship between PWV and precipitation during the ‘July 20’ heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou. Finally, a quantitative study was conducted by an eigenvalue matching method. The main experimental results were as follows. Compared with MERRA-2 PWV, the accuracy of ERA5 PWV was slightly higher. Latitude, altitude and season were the influencing factors of the NWP PWV estimation accuracy. The change trend of ERA5 PWV was consistent with both 24 h cumulative precipitation and surface precipitation during the ‘July 20’ heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou. The average optimal matching degree and optimal matching time between NWP PWV and surface precipitation during the ‘July 20’ heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou was 56.6% and 3.68 h, respectively. The maximum optimal matching degree was 80.3%. The spatial–temporal relationship between NWP PWV and surface precipitation was strong.

A fast voxel traversal algorithm for ray tracing was applied to build a 4 × 4 × 20 tomography model using the observation data of 11 ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) meteorology (GNSS/MET) stations in Hebei Province, China. The precipitation water vapor (PWV) observed at 05 a.m. (Universal Time Coordinated: UTC) on 10 December 2019, was used to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) water vapor density fields over the test area. The tomographic results (GNSS_T) show that the water vapor density above this area is mainly below 25 g/m3 and is concentrated between the first to the fourth layers. The vertical distribution conforms to the exponential characteristics, while the horizontal distribution shows a decreasing trend from southwest to northeast. In addition, the results of the 0.25° grid dataset generated by the Global Forecast System (GFS) of the National Center for Environmental Forecasting (NCEP) (GFS_L) were interpolated to the height of the tomographic grid, which is in good agreement with the tomographic results. GFS_L is larger than GNSS_T on the first floor at the surface, with an average deviation of 0.19 g/m3. In contrast, GFS_L from the second floor to the top of the model is smaller than GNSS_T, with the average deviations distributed between −0.08 and −0.15 g/m3.

The radio occultation method, one of the methods used to provide planetary atmospheric profiles with high vertical resolution, was applied to China’s first Mars mission, Tianwen-1. We carried out observations based on the Chinese Deep Space Network, and one-way, two-way, and three-way modes were used for Doppler observations from the Tianwen-1 spacecraft. We successfully obtained effective observations from Tianwen-1 on 22 and 25 March 2022. An inversion system developed for Tianwen-1 radio occultation observations enabled the derivation of neutral atmospheric density, pressure, temperature, and electron density profiles of Mars. Utilizing one-way tracking data, Martian ionospheric electron density profiles were retrieved at latitudes between 68.7 and 70.7 degrees (N). However, the presence of strong random walk noise in one-way tracking data led to poor inversion results. Meanwhile, Martian ionospheric electron density and neutral atmosphere profiles were extracted from two-way and three-way tracking data at latitudes between 55.1 and 57.0 degrees (S) on 22 March and at latitudes between 62.8 and 63.4 degrees (S) on 25 March. Importantly, our inversion results from Tianwen-1 maintained consistency with results from the Mars Express and the Chapman theory (mainly in the M2 layer). Through two days’ observation experiments, we established and verified the occultation solution system and prepared for the follow-up occultation plans.
