Background/Objectives: Oral health is a complex concept involving physical, psychological, emotional, and social components. A key factor in maintaining oral tissue integrity is redox balance, which is disrupted by oxidative stress (OS) through an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses. This study examines the contribution of endogenous and exogenous sources to OS and explores the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants from the Asteraceae and Lamiaceae families in restoring redox homeostasis and improving oral health. Methods: A literature review was conducted, analyzing the role of OS in oral diseases and the antioxidant mechanisms of selected Asteraceae species. Special attention was given to their phytochemical contents—polyphenols, flavonoids, and essential oils—and their biological relevance to oral health. Results: OS plays a critical role in the onset and progression of oral conditions such as caries, periodontitis, gingivitis, aphthous ulcers, abscesses, precancerous lesions, and oral cancers. ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) cause inflammation, tissue breakdown, and salivary gland dysfunction. Asteraceae plants like Matricaria chamomilla, Calendula officinalis, Cichorium intybus, Taraxacum officinale, Arctium lappa, Achillea millefolium, and Solidago virgaurea demonstrate notable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties that help counteract OS and support oral homeostasis. Conclusions: Asteraceae and Lamiaceae species show high therapeutic potential in addressing OS-related oral disorders. Their bioactive compounds aid in restoring redox balance and protecting oral tissues. These findings support the integration of phytotherapeutic agents into oral healthcare and call for further clinical validation of plant-based strategies for disease prevention and management.

Background: With a significant increase in both incidence and mortality, oral cancer—particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)—is one of the main causes of death in developing countries. Even though there is evidence of advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the overall survival rate for patients with OSCC has improved, but by a small percentage. This may be due, on the one hand, to the fact that the disease is diagnosed when it is at a too-advanced stage, when metastases are already present. Methods: This review explores the therapeutic potential of natural herbal products and their use as adjuvant therapies in the treatment of oral cancer from online sources in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Scopus, Elsevier). Results: Even if classic therapies are known to be effective, they often produce many serious side effects and can create resistance. Certain natural plant compounds may offer a complementary approach by inducing apoptosis, suppressing tumor growth, and improving chemotherapy effectiveness. The integration of these compounds with conventional treatments to obtain remarkable synergistic effects represents a major point of interest to many authors. This review highlights the study of molecular mechanisms and their efficiency in in vitro and in vivo models, as well as the strategic ways in which drugs can be administered to optimize their use in real contexts. Conclusions: This review may have a significant impact on the oncology community, creating new inspirations for the development of more effective, safer cancer therapies with less toxic potential.

In the current context of concern for the improvement and protection of environmental conditions, emphasis is placed on the provision of non-toxic, eco-friendly, renewable biomaterials to replace established chemical substances. Lythri herba is the aerial part of the plant species Lythrum salicaria L., known in the scientific literature especially for its content of tannins and total polyphenols, which highlight its antioxidant, hemostatic, antibacterial and antidiarrheal properties. Chitosan is a biopolymer widely used in industry and medicine due to its abundance in nature, its biodegradability, lack of toxicity and the ease with which it can be transformed into several basic forms (hydrogel, membrane, sponge). The aqueous solutions and membranes obtained in this study by merging these two natural resources were biologically tested in terms of genotoxicity (SOS-Chromo assay), hemolytic activity, thrombin generation activity and bacterial adhesion to reveal outwardly the lack of these properties and their use for medical purposes. The results of the current study attest to the absence of mutagenic and slight hemolyzing properties, thus supporting the possibility of using this extract and membrane in medical and pharmaceutical therapeutic practice. The surface parameters of membranes were examined and important influences at thrombin activity were found. Also, bacterial adhesion results showed a correlation between Lythri herba and chitosan concentrations and membranes’ appearances (swelling, stability). The results show that the membranes could be a promising material for biomedical applications.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most serious forms of cancer in the world. The opportunities to decrease the mortality rate would lie in the possibility of earlier identification of this pathology, and at the same time, the immediate approach of anticancer therapy. Furthermore, new treatment strategies for OSCC are needed to improve existing therapeutic options. Bioactive compounds found in medicinal plants could be used to support these strategies. It is already known that they have an increased potential for action and a safety profile; therefore, they could improve the therapeutic effect of classical chemotherapeutic agents in combination therapies. Methodology: This research was based on an extensive review of recently published studies in scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). The selection criteria were based on experimental protocols investigating molecular mechanisms, synergistic actions with conventional anticancer agents, and novel formulation possibilities (e.g., nanoemulsions and mucoadhesive films) for the targeted delivery of bioactive compounds in OSCC. Particular attention was given to in vitro, in vivo, translational, and clinical studies that have proven therapeutic relevance. Results: Recent discoveries regarding the effect of bioactive compounds in the treatment of oral cancer were analyzed, with a view to integrating them into oncological practice for increasing therapeutic efficacy and reducing the occurrence of adverse reactions and treatment resistance. Conclusions: Significant progress has been achieved in this review, allowing us to appreciate that the valorization of these bioactive compounds is emerging.

Background: Gastrointestinal tract cancers represent a significant worldwide health concern, accounting for almost one-third of cancer-related deaths. The existing chemotherapy drugs used in gastrointestinal cancers are ineffective, so prognosis is poor, recurrence and metastasis rates are high, and survival time remains short, necessitating the development of novel antitumor drugs that exhibit low toxicity and less potential for the development of drug resistance. This challenge is considerable, but evidence from the past decades supports the medicinal properties and functionalities of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and acid phenolics with anticancer activities. Our purpose was to find data on the relationship between gastrointestinal cancer and bioactive compounds from Prunus species, focusing on their molecular mechanisms of action. Results: Studies highlight the potential of bioactive compounds from Prunus species to modulate the cancer cell signaling pathways involved in gastrointestinal tumorigenesis. Conclusions: The studies reviewed suggest that polyphenols from Prunus species exhibit promising gastrointestinal anticancer activities and could represent an adjunctive therapeutic strategy in cancer treatment. Further studies are necessary to validate these compounds’ therapeutic potential and their feasibility as cost-effective treatments for cancer.

Chitosan, a biopolymer with molecular variability, continues to demonstrate promising potential for biomedical and biotechnological applications. In this study, mixtures of β-oligochitosan, with a low molar mass (MM) of 1.5 kDa (CH1), α-oligochitosan, MM = 26.39 kDa (CH2), and α-chitosan, MM = 804.33 kDa (CH3) were analyzed. The tested solutions, chitosan alone and mixtures (CH1:CH2 and CH1:CH3), prepared in different mass ratios (1:1, 2:1, 3:1), were characterized in terms of MM and degree of deacetylation (DDA). The antimicrobial activity on S. aureus, E. coli, and C. parapsilosis was evaluated. The fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) was also calculated for mixtures. Using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay (BSLA), the in vivo interactions, which involve the internalization of chitosan in the cells, were assessed. The results showed that α-β chitosan mixtures exhibited an in vitro antimicrobial antagonistic effect (FICI > 1) for all samples. In contrast, significantly improved larval survival (%), development, and motility (p < 0.0001), with a close correlation between cellular inclusions and naupliar stages (R = 0.94), were detected in vivo testing. These data support the strategic use of chitosan mixtures with variable characteristics in biotechnological applications, with potential for optimizing intake, biological activity, and controlling cytotoxicity.
