Social and economic changes make it necessary to put in a great deal of conscious effort to shift towards a closed-loop economy, where waste provides a source of raw materials. The low level of selective collection of municipal waste poses a challenge in many countries, including Poland. One of the major causes of the problems in Poland lies in the fact that waste collection points (WCPs) do not have adequate waste containers. The paper aims to put forward a proposal to improve the operation of WCPs. Seeking for new solutions, it is necessary to account for the conditions under which the bodies responsible for waste management take their decisions. They have to comply with the legislation in force, and at the same time, choose the options that generate the lowest costs. The study concerned a typical residential district with housing in multi-family buildings. For two fill rate variants and four emptying schedules, the number of above-ground containers was calculated. Two variants: for above-ground containers (variant I) and for semi-underground containers (variant II), were compared in terms of operating costs and investment outlays. The proposed increase in the number of above-ground containers, and additionally providing semi-underground containers, will contribute to increased engagement of the local community in the selective collection of waste.

Sewage sludge (SS) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has important soil-forming and fertilizing properties. However, it may not always be used for this purpose. One of the main reasons why SS cannot be used for natural purposes is its heavy metal (HM) content. SS from the wastewater treatment plant in Poland was subjected to an analysis of the potential anthropogenic hazard of HMs, especially in terms of their mobility and accumulation in soil. Calculations were made for the concentrations of HMs in SS from the analyzed wastewater treatment plants and in arable soil from measurement points in places of its potential use. The geoaccumulation index (GAI), potential environmental risk index (PERI), risk assessment code (RAC) and environmental risk determinant (ERD) were calculated. Then the values of the indicators were compared with the mobility of HMs, which was the highest risk of soil contamination. It was shown that a high level of potential risk and geoaccumulation indicators did not necessarily disqualify the use of SS, provided that HMs were in immovable fractions.

Wastewater treatment processes produce sewage sludge (SS), which, in line with environmental sustainability principles, can be a valuable source of matter in the production of lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA). The literature on the influence of SS content and sintering temperature on the properties of LECA is scarce. This paper aims to statistically evaluate the effects of SS content and sintering temperature on LECA physical properties. Total porosity, pore volume, and apparent density were determined with the use of a density analyzer. A helium pycnometer was utilized to determine the specific density. Closed porosity was calculated. The test results demonstrated a statistically significant influence of the SS content on the specific density and water absorption of LECA. The sintering temperature had a significant effect on the specific density, apparent density, total porosity, closed porosity, total volume of pores, and water absorption. It was proved that a broad range of the SS content is admissible in the raw material mass for the production of LECA.

Sewage sludge (SS) is a by-product of processes conducted during the treatment of wastewater. It can be used in many different ways. One of them is the use of SS in agriculture as an organic fertiliser, but the main criterion for such use is the heavy metals (HMs) content. Knowledge of the total content of HMs in SS does not translate into the danger it may pose. The toxicity of metals is largely dependent on their mobility. The mobility of SS from three different wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, which were characterised by an increased zinc content, was examined in this study. The aim of the study was to prove whether the high level of zinc in SS actually disqualifies the possibility of its natural use. Calculations were made for five environmental hazard indicators: the geoaccumulation index of heavy metals in soil (Igeo), potential environmental risk indicator (PERI), risk assessment code (RAC), environmental risk factor (ERF), and the authors’ own environmental risk determinant (ERD) indicator. The obtained results show how important mobility analysis is when assessing the possibility of natural use of SS.

Popular incineration of sewage sludge results in the increase in heavy metals content in ash. The knowledge of the total content of heavy metals in sewage sludge ash does not demonstrate a potential hazard. The toxicity of heavy metals in great measure depends on the form of their occurrence. The prevailing norms do not require the ecological risk assessment of the environmental burden with heavy metals for the choice of the method of the utilization of sewage sludge ash. The paper presents the research results on the mobility of heavy metals in sewage sludge ash after its incineration. The geo-accumulation index (IGAI), the potential ecological risk index (PERI) and the risk assessment code (RAC) were used for the evaluation of the potential soil contamination with heavy metals. The authors also suggested a new formula, which took into consideration more factors influencing the risk of the contamination of a water–soil environment with heavy metals—the water and soil environment risk index (WSERI). The calculated indices for sewage sludge ash indicate the risk of soil contamination with heavy metals.

This article presents the results of research on biomass combustion process of vegetable origin in a 23 kW SAS boiler. The research material was prepared from sawdust and fruit pomace. The assembly of thermocouples in the experimental boiler allowed the reading of temperature values at individual levels of the combustion chamber. In addition, the composition of waste gases was monitored using the GASS 3000 flue gas analyzer. The obtained emission level was compared with the limit values in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Development in force. The physical parameters of the mixtures that were subjected to the combustion process were also examined. The analysis of static and dynamic material characteristics of biomass aims at finding a low-emission and at the same time high-efficiency renewable fuel, adapted to V class boilers.

Sewage sludge is an example of waste considered as biomass. The utilization of sewage sludge is more often realized through combustion, which simultaneously constitutes the recovery of energy from a renewable source. However, the obtained ash requires neutralization. An alternative method for landfilling of sewage sludge ash is its conversion into synthetic zeolites. One of them is Zeolite P. The study shows the results of thesynthesis of zeolite P from sewage sludge ash by chemical conversion. The conversion of sewage sludge ash was conducted at the activationtemperatures of 60°C and 90°C, crystallization temperatures of 60°C and 90°C, crystallization time of 72 hours and the SSA:NaOH ratio of 1:1.4. The research of sewage sludge ashes after zeolitization included the observation of changes of ash particles surface, the identification of crystalized phases, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and specific surface area. The optimalsynthesis conditions for zeolite P are the activation and crystallization temperatures of 90°C. CEC of modified sewage sludge ashes is greater than CEC of sewage sludge ash. The presented method of sewage sludge ash conversion allows to obtain a usable material.

The paper presents investigations into the possibility of using sewage sludge ashes in the process of removal of selected contaminants from landfill leachate. A series of tests was carried out for that purpose using leachate from the Promnik landfill in the Świętokrzyskie Province, Poland. The used sewage sludge ash was obtained by incineration of sewage sludge in laboratory conditions. Additional tests were conducted for sewage sludge ash, which was modified by zeolitization with a fusion method. This modified ash contained zeolite X. The tests were carried out in the process times of 10, 20, 30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 min. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and selected elements including metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Fe, Mg, Zn, Ca, Na, K) were determined in leachate, before and after the treatment process. Furthermore, the following quantities were measured: pH, potential, conductivity, colour and dissolved organic compound (UV254). All analyses performed were compliant with the binding standards. It was observed that ashes used in the experiment proved effective for copper and lead removal from leachate samples. It was shown that the modified ash turned out to be as effective as the ash, which was not subjected to zeolitization with the fusion method. The modified ash of concern can also be used for the removal of organic compounds from landfill leachate.

The bioconversion process of municipal solid waste was assessed on the basis of the results obtained from the biodrying reactor working at a full industrial scale. The bio- reactor is a part of mechanical-biological installation following mechanical stage. The bio-reactor was equipped with measuring devices allowing the analysis of the parameters like: temperature both inside the waste and also air above the waste and also the humidity of waste during the 14 days of the biodrying process. The kinetics of bioconversion was assessed basing on measured the loss of ignition (LOI) parameter detected during the biodrying process. The LOI value of the samples varied from 17.03% d.m. to 30.34% d.m. depending on the location inside the reactor. The estimated kinetic rate constant kT of the bioconversion of biomass in the industrial reactor was kT = 0.3141.In analyzed case study the calorific value of product leaving the full-scale bio-reactor is too low to use this product as an alternative fuel. As was stated, the reason of this is too low a share of the carbon-rich fraction in the feedstock.

The differences between the composting, stabilization and drying processes were discussed. The law criteria for mechanical-biological treatment plant were presented. The purpose of the article was to assess the effectiveness of biodrying MSW (municipal solid waste) in a full scale reactor taking into account the degree of biological decomposition of organic matter and its suitability for RDF (refuse derived fuel). Therefore the microbial activity was measured as the O2/96 h uptake. CO2/96 h production and the respiration activity AT4 for untreated and biodried waste were compared. The decomposition of organic matter was measured by loss on ignition (LOI) and total organic carbon (TOC). The product after the biodrying process was assessed according to the EURITS and PN-EN 15359 criteria for the quality of RDF (residual derived fuel). The result 8.48 MJ/kg of calorific value shows that bio- dried waste is ranked below the EURITS minimum level and can be classified as fifth class by PN-EN 15359 requirements. The amount of chlorine, mercury and lead fulfil the EURITS criteria. The microbial activity after processing in the biodrying reactor expressed as oxygen uptake exceeded the permissible level of 10 mg O2/g d.m. in the time range ten months. The regulatory parameters TOC < 20% d.m. and LOI < 35% d.m. criteria were not met.

The combustion of municipal sewage sludge allows for the recovery of renewable energy. However, it simultaneously causes the formation of ash which is not neutral for the environment. The study presents the research on the possibility of using sewage sludge ash as a raw material for the synthesis of zeolites. The synthesis of zeolites was performed with the use of an indirect fusion method and a direct hydrothermal method. The research on sewage sludge ash after zeolitization included the identification of crystalized phases, the observation of changes of ash particles surface and the measurement of cation exchange capacity (CEC). The research results proved that optimal conditions for the formation of zeolite Y were the synthesis with the indirect fusion method at the sewage sludge ash to hydroxy sodalite ratio of 1:1.8, the activation temperature of 60°C and the crystallization temperature of 90°C. Hydroxy sodalite was found in samples from both methods of zeolitization. However, in the case of direct hydrothermal method, particles of hydroxy sodalite structure were less numerous indicating a small conversion of sewage sludge ash to crystalline zeolite. CEC values comparable to commercial zeolites resulted from zeolitization with the indirect fusion method.

The article presents the fossil fuels combustion effects in terms of the dangers of increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Based on the bibliography review the negative impact of increased carbon dioxide concentration on the human population is shown in the area of the external environment, particularly in terms of the air pollution and especially the impact on human health. The paper presents biomass as the renewable energy alternative source to fossil fuels which combustion gives a neutral CO2 emissions and therefore should be the main carrier of primary energy in Poland. The paper presents the combustion heat results and humidity of selected dry wood pellets (pellets straw, energy-crop willow pellets, sawdust pellets), dried sewage sludge from two sewage treatment plants of the Holly Cross province pointing their energy potential. In connection with the results analysis of these studies the standard requirements were discussed (EN 14918:2010 “Solid bio-fuels-determination of calorific value”) regarding the basic parameters determining the biomass energy value (combustion heat, humidity).
