The main purpose of this study is to examine the implementation of active methodologies in the teaching–learning process in computer science. To achieve this objective, a systematic review using the PRISMA method was performed; the search for articles was conducted through the Scopus and Web of Science databases and the scientific search engine Google Scholar. By establishing inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 research papers were selected addressing the use of various active methodologies which have had a positive impact on students’ learning processes. Among the principal active methodologies highlighted are problem-based learning, flipped classrooms, and gamification. The results of the review show how active methodologies promote significant learning, in addition to fostering more outstanding commitment, participation, and motivation on the students’ part. It was observed that active methodologies contribute to the development of fundamental cognitive and socio-emotional skills for their professional growth.

The problems of poor academic performance and lag are recurrent in higher-level educational institutions, especially at the beginning of university studies. The early detection of academic risk conditions enables the implementation of educational intervention measures to address factors of poor school performance, associated with the particular contexts of the students. The purpose of this study was to generate predictive models of academic risk, using educational data mining methods, specifically classification or prediction techniques, for the analysis, obtaining and validation of the models. The data used correspond to admission exam results and sociodemographic data of 415 students of the computer science majors at the Autonomous University of Yucatán (Mexico), enrolled between 2016 and 2019. The results show that the best model corresponding to the algorithm of LMT classification, with a precision value of 75.42% and 0.805 for the area under the ROC curve. It was possible to identify the best predictive attributes, particularly the bachelor entrance exam tests were very significant. The development of computer tools for the early detection of academic risk and strategies for timely educational intervention is proposed.

School dropout in higher education remains a significant global challenge with profound socioeconomic consequences. To address this complex issue, educational institutions increasingly rely on business intelligence (BI) and related predictive analytics, such as machine learning and data mining techniques. This systematic review critically examines the application of BI and predictive analytics for analyzing and preventing student dropout, synthesizing evidence from 230 studies published globally between 1996 and 2025. We collected literature from the Google Scholar and Scopus databases using a comprehensive search strategy, incorporating keywords such as “business intelligence”, “machine learning”, and “big data”. The results highlight a wide range of predictive tools and methodologies, notably data visualization platforms (e.g., Power BI) and algorithms like decision trees, Random Forest, and logistic regression, demonstrating effectiveness in identifying dropout patterns and at-risk students. Common predictive variables included personal, socioeconomic, academic, institutional, and engagement-related factors, reflecting dropout’s multifaceted nature. Critical challenges identified include data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR and FERPA), limited data integration capabilities, interpretability of advanced models, ethical considerations, and educators’ capacity to leverage BI effectively. Despite these challenges, BI applications significantly enhance institutions’ ability to predict dropout accurately and implement timely, targeted interventions. This review emphasizes the need for ongoing research on integrating ethical AI-driven analytics and scaling BI solutions across diverse educational contexts to reduce dropout rates effectively and sustainably.

In recent decades, Higher Education has been on a journey towards virtualization, resulting in the emergence of new education modalities based on the Internet, such as online and blended education. This has given rise to the need to develop evaluation models and experiences in order to assess the quality of these modalities, which in turn has led to an increase in the scientific literature in this field. Considering this scenario, the present study aimed to build the state of the art in the field of quality evaluation of virtual education in the higher level, particularly with regard to the blended modality, for which the methodology of systematic review of the literature was implemented in the scientific production published between 2015 and 2021. The results show an inclination towards a partial conception of evaluation, focused on the quality of concrete training actions and specific aspects of virtual education, as are the subjects and LMS platforms, in substitution of a global perspective, also oriented towards online education and without a clear distinction between this and the blended modality.
