Burnout and stress-related issues are significant concerns among medical personnel involved in emergency situations due to the high demands of their work. A cross-sectional descriptive and comparative study was conducted on 266 prehospital emergency personnel across five Romanian counties, comprising 41 physicians, 74 nurses, and 151 paramedics. Data were collected through an online form, including demographic and professional characteristics, and five validated scales. This study revealed moderate (49.3%) to high (25.9%) burnout rates, with 35% showing signs of work addiction. Despite these challenges, the personnel demonstrated high levels of stress-related growth (61.2%), strong self-discipline (74.1%), and low to moderate responsive distress (100%). Physicians exhibited higher work addiction and job satisfaction, whereas paramedics faced higher burnout, self-discipline, and distress levels. Nurses showed lower burnout and self-discipline levels. These findings highlight the prevalence of burnout and work addiction among emergency medical personnel, while also underscoring the presence of protective factors like higher self-discipline, good level of stress-related growth, and low to moderate responsive distress. The distinct differences in experiences among physicians, nurses, and paramedics emphasize the need for tailored strategies to address these issues within each group.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely utilized synthetic polymer, favored in various applications for its desirable physicochemical characteristics and widespread accessibility. However, its extensive utilization, coupled with improper waste disposal, has led to the alarming pollution of the environment. Thus, recycling PET products is essential for diminishing global pollution and turning waste into meaningful materials. Therefore, this study proposes the fabrication of electrospun membranes made of recycled PET nanofibers as a cost-effective valorization method for PET waste. ZnO nanoparticles were coated onto polymeric materials to enhance the antimicrobial properties of the PET fibers. Morphostructural investigations revealed the formation of fibrillar membranes made of unordered nanofibers (i.e., 40–100 nm in diameter), on the surface of which zinc oxide nanoparticles of 10–20 nm were attached. PET@ZnO membranes demonstrated effective antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and molds, while imparting no toxicity to amniotic fluid stem cells. In vivo tests confirmed the materials’ biocompatibility, as no side effects were observed in mice following membrane implantation. Altogether, these findings highlight the potential of integrating ZnO nanoparticles into recycled PET to develop multifunctional materials suitable for healthcare facilities (such as antimicrobial textiles) and biomedical devices, including applications such as textiles, meshes, and sutures.

Arnica L. genus (Asteraceae) comprises perennial herbs native to the temperate and boreal parts of the northern hemisphere. Arnica montana is the main species. It shows different biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antitumor effects. The Arnica formulations are mainly used for pain management. This systematic review is aimed at summarizing the studies focusing on the use of Arnica products on pain and inflammatory signs due to traumatic injuries related to sport and surgical interventions as well as to arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Both phytotherapeutic and homeopathic formulations are taken into account. This paper only includes manuscripts published in mainstream journals. A literature search from Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases has been carried out using a combination of the keywords “Arnica”, “trauma”, “sport”, “injury”, “injuries”, and “pain”. According to the search strategy and inclusion criteria for this study, 42 eligible papers, focusing on both Arnica alone and formulations containing a mixture of plant extracts, have been finally selected. This review critically discusses the in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies dealing with Arnica products, reporting both positive and negative outcomes, thus providing perspectives for future research on the plant pharmacological potential.

Background/Objectives: This is a cross-sectional study designed to explore the contribution of personality factors (the Alternative Five Factor Model) and lower order characteristics (responsive distress and self-discipline) to burnout, work addiction, and stress-related growth among Romanian prehospital emergency healthcare workers. Methods: A total of 266 prehospital professionals (41 physicians, 74 nurses, and 151 paramedics) participated in the study out of the 728 invited (36.5% response rate). The age of participants ranged between 20 and 57 years and 67.3% were men. The participants completed the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (the short version), the Stress-Related Growth Scale, the Zuckerman–Kuhlman Personality Inventory, the Responsive Distress Scale, and the Self-Discipline Scale. Results: The results show that burnout was predicted by age, gender, impulsive sensation seeking, responsive distress, and self-discipline; work addiction was predicted by aggression–hostility, sociability, and responsive distress, while stress-related growth was predicted by age, activity, and self-discipline. Additionally, we found that emergency healthcare workers displayed lower impulsive sensation seeking, neuroticism–anxiety, and aggression–hostility, but displayed higher levels of activity and sociability in comparison with the general Romanian population, although these differences must be interpreted with caution as the general Romanian population tend to be significantly younger. Conclusions: This study provides new insights into the role of personality traits as risk factors for burnout and work addiction, and as protective factors for stress-related growth in prehospital emergency personnel. It is also among the few studies in this field to employ the Alternative Five Factor Model of personality.

Chronic liver injuries often lead to hepatic fibrosis, a condition characterized by excessive extracellular matrix accumulation and abnormal connective tissue hyperplasia. Without effective treatment, hepatic fibrosis can progress to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Current treatments, including liver transplantation, are limited by donor shortages and high costs. As such, there is an urgent need for effective therapeutic strategies. This review focuses on the potential of plant-based therapeutics, particularly polyphenols, phenolic acids, and flavonoids, in treating hepatic fibrosis. These compounds have demonstrated anti-fibrotic activities through various signaling pathways, including TGF-β/Smad, AMPK/mTOR, Wnt/β-catenin, NF-κB, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, and hedgehog pathways. Additionally, this review highlights the advancements in nanoparticulate drug delivery systems that enhance the pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and therapeutic efficacy of these bioactive compounds. Methodologically, this review synthesizes findings from recent studies, providing a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms and benefits of these plant-based treatments. The integration of novel drug delivery systems with plant-based therapeutics holds significant promise for developing effective treatments for hepatic fibrosis.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a chronic disease characterized by reduced bone mass and altered microarchitecture, leading to bone fragility and fractures. Due to its high morbidity, disability, and healthcare costs, identifying new biomarkers and therapeutic strategies is crucial for improving OP diagnosis and prevention. In this context, this narrative review aims to depict the role of carbohydrate-binding proteins Galectins (Gals) in the combined processes of inflammation and aging contributing to bone fragility by exploring their potential as novel therapeutic targets for OP.
