The current specification requires the same limiting values of inelastic rotation and the overstrength factor for shear links with a length ratio less than 1.6. However, recent studies have shown that the mechanical properties of ordinary shear links with a length ratio ranging from 1.0 to 1.6 are obviously different from those of very short shear links with a length ratio less than 1.0. Additionally, shear links made of different steel materials have differences in mechanical properties. Based on Q345 steel, three ordinary shear links with a length ratio of 1.36 were designed to intensively explore the influence of stiffener configurations and spacing on mechanical properties. Under cyclic loading tests, the failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, secant stiffness curves and energy dissipation capacities of shear link specimens were recorded. The results show that the overstrength factor and inelastic rotation of specimens SL-1 and SL-2, which had different stiffener configurations, reached 1.59 and 0.10, while those of specimen SL-3, which had wider stiffener spacing, reached 1.48 and 0.07, which showed that varying the stiffener configuration has no obvious effect, while relaxing stiffener spacing can result in severe buckling of the web. Additionally, its bearing capacity, inelastic rotation, secant stiffness and energy dissipation capacity reduced. Hence, the stiffener spacing should satisfy the requirements of the specification and not be too wide. Based on ABAQUS software, finite element models of ordinary shear links proved to be accurately consistent with test specimens in terms of mechanical properties. On this basis, 114 numerical models of ordinary shear links with different length ratios, stiffener spacings, flange-to-web area ratios, flange strengths, web depth-to-thickness ratios and stiffener thicknesses were designed to study the influence on the overstrength factor.

By integrating a very short shear link–shear slotted bolted connection (VSSL-SSBC) and two self-centering SMA braces (SCBs), a novel self-centering shear link (SC-SL) was developed for installation between a steel brace and steel beam in an eccentrically braced frame (EBF). The SC-SL can enhance the seismic performance and seismic resilience capacity of the EBF by achieving a high bearing capacity and low residual deformation. The mechanical properties of the VSSL-SSBC and SC-SL were designed and analyzed using both experimental and numerical methods. Subsequently, the seismic performances of EBFs equipped with VSSL-SSBC and SC-SL were analyzed under different earthquakes. Validated numerical methods were employed to investigate the deformation modes, stress nephograms, and hysteresis curves of the EBFs. The deformation mode and hysteresis curve of the VSSL-SSBC exhibit an initial frictional slip of the SSBC, followed by the load-bearing response of the VSSL. The skeleton curve of the VSSL-SSBC consists of elastic, slip, elastoplastic, and plastic stages, and the deformation and damage are significantly reduced at the same displacement. In the SC-SL, the SCB undergoes substantial deformation when the SMA is in tension, effectively minimizing residual deformation. Under frequent earthquakes, the stress and displacement of all components in both the EBF-VSSL-SSBC and EBF-SC-SL are essentially equivalent, and the VSSL-SSBC remains elastic, without significant yielding deformation. Under rare earthquakes, incorporating SCB in EBF-SC-SL significantly enhances the ultimate load capacity by 19.66% and reduces the residual deformation by 27.90%. This improvement greatly contributes to the seismic resilience of the EBF.

An innovative self-centering shape memory alloy (SMA) connection that is used in a steel frame beam-column joint was developed to improve the energy dissipative capacity and self-centering capacity, and reduce the residual deformation. Five self-centering SMA connections with the effect of SMA fracture, bolt bending, and bolt pretension, were designed and analyzed, so the deformation modes, failure modes, hysteresis curves, and skeleton curves of the specimens can be obtained. Then, the validated finite element analysis method was used to simulate the analysis models, considering the influences of SMA areas, angle thicknesses, and slip bolt strength. The test results show that the hysteretic curves of the SMA connection can be idealized as a flag-shape, and the bearing capacity, energy dissipative capacity, and self-centering capacity will be effectively improved by enlarging the SMA areas. The SMA wires in the connection may be fractured while the strain of the SMA wires reaches 15%, so the displacement of the SMA connection should be restricted with a strain value of 8% for safety. The effect of asymmetry for the SMA connection may cause the bolt to bend and reduce the bending capacity. In addition, the yield force of each plate is suggested to be higher than the ultimate bearing capacity of the SMA connection. Finally, based on the test and finite element analysis results, the design method of the self-centering SMA connection is proposed to avoid the unexpected failure modes and achieve the expected mechanical properties.
