As a new vegetation monitoring index, the KNDVI has certain advantages in characterizing the evolutionary process of regional desertification. However, there are few reports on desertification monitoring based on KNDVI and feature space models. In this study, seven feature parameters, including the kernel normalized difference vegetation index (KNDVI) and Albedo, were introduced to construct different models for desertification remote-sensing monitoring. The optimal desertification remote-sensing monitoring index model was determined with the measured data; then, the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of desertification in Gulang County from 2013 to 2023 was analyzed and revealed. The main conclusions were as follows: (1) Compared with the NDVI and MSAVI, the KNDVI showed more advantages in the characterization of the desertification evolution process. (2) The point–line pattern KNDVI-Albedo remote-sensing index model had the highest monitoring accuracy, reaching 94.93%, while the point–line pattern NDVI-TGSI remote-sensing monitoring index had the lowest accuracy of 54.38%. (3) From 2013 to 2023, the overall desertification situation in Gulang County showed a trend of improvement with a pattern of “firstly aggravation and then alleviation.” Additionally, the gravity center of desertification in Gulang County first shifted to the southeast and then to the northeast, indicating that the northeast’s aggravating rate of desertification was higher than in the southwest during the period. (4) From 2013 to 2023, the area of stable desertification in Gulang County was the largest, followed by the slightly weakened zone, and the most significant transition area was that of extreme desertification to severe desertification. The research results provide important decision support for the precise monitoring and governance of regional desertification.

Using the kernel normalized difference vegetation index (KNDVI) to monitor soil salinization has great advantages; however, approaches using KNDVI and a feature space model to monitor salinization have not yet been reported. In this study, the KNDVI, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), extended difference vegetation index (EDVI), green normalized difference vegetation index (TGDVI), modified soil-adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI), and salt index (SI) were used to establish five feature space monitoring indices for salinization. The spatio-temporal evolution pattern of soil salinization in the Yellow River Delta from 2000 to 2020 was analyzed based on the optimal monitoring index. The remote sensing monitoring index model based on KNDVI-SI’s point-to-point mode had the best applicability with R2 = 0.93, followed by EDVI-SI’s salinization monitoring index model with R2 = 0.90. From 2000 to 2020, soil salinization in the Yellow River Delta followed an exacerbating then improving trend. Soil salinization was more severe in the northern and eastern coastal areas of the Yellow River Delta. These results are conducive to salinization restoration and control in the Yellow River Delta.

Under the combined impact of climatic, socioeconomic, and environmental factors, the vegetation NPP change process and its responses to drive factors in the sub-regions of Mainland China are not clear. This study analyzes the changing pattern of vegetation NPP in China from 2000 to 2022 from the perspective of zoning and clarifies its response mechanism to climate-human interaction based on the gravity center model, third-order partial correlation coefficient and geographical detector. The results showed that: (1) There was an overall decreasing trend of vegetation NPP in China from the southeast to the northwest; (2) The vegetation NPP gravity center in Northeast, Northwest, and North China migrated southwards, while that of Southwest, Central South, and East China showed northward migration.;(3) Human activities played a dominant role in zones with increasing vegetation NPP from 2000 to 2010, while climate change greatly contributed to the increase in vegetation NPP during 2011–2022; (4) Human activities, such as deforestation and overgrazing, in Northeast and North China should be reduced to prevent vegetation ecosystem degradation, and the negative impact of human activities should be reduced to maintain the growth of vegetation NPP. This study was conducted to support decision-making for the precise restoration of ecosystems.

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) plays an important role in the quantitative evaluation of carbon source/sinks in terrestrial ecosystems. This study used Theil–Sen median trend analysis, the Mann–Kendall method, and the Geodetector model to analyze the variation patterns and its dominant factors of NEP from 2010 to 2020. The results showed the following: (1) During 2010–2020, the spatial distribution of carbon sinks in China’s terrestrial ecosystems showed a pattern of high in the southeast and low in the northwest. The area with NEP < 0 accounted for 44.74% of the total area, while the area with NEP > 0 accounted for 55.26%. (2) The northwest region belonged to the significant carbon source, while the other regions belonged to significant carbon sinks. (3) The annual average NEP in different sub-regions showed an increasing trend. During 2010–2020, the overall NEP in China showed a trend in shifting from low-level to high-level, indicating that the NEP of terrestrial ecosystems in China increased during the past 11 years. (4) The NEP gravity center in Northeast China showed a trend in moving southward and then northward, while that of the NEP gravity center in East China showed a circular migration trend of ‘northwest-southwest–northeast–southeast’. The gravity center of NEP in Northwest China was moving northeastward. The migration trajectory of the NEP gravity center in Southwest China presented a “Z” shape. The change in the gravity center of NEP in the central and southern regions had a strong circuitous nature, and the overall trend was to migrate southward. (5) The combined actions of climate change and human activities were the main reason for the change in NEP in China’s terrestrial ecosystem from 2010 to 2020. (6) There were obvious differences in the dominant driving factors of NEP evolution in different regions and different periods in the past 40 years.

Previous studies were mostly conducted based on sparse time series and different phenological images, which often ignored the dramatic changes in salinization evolution throughout the year. Based on Landsat and moderate-resolution-imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from 2000 to 2020, this study applied the Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (ESTARFM) algorithm to obtain similar phenological images for the month of April for the past 20 years. Based on the random forest algorithm, the surface parameters of the salinization were optimized, and the feature space index models were constructed. Combined with the measured ground data, the optimal monitoring index model of salinization was determined, and then the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of salinization and its driving mechanisms in the Yellow River Delta were revealed. The main conclusions were as follows: (1) The derived long-time-series and similar phenological-fusion images enable us to reveal the patterns of change in the dramatic salinization in the year that we examined using the ESTARFM algorithm. (2) The NDSI-TGDVI feature space salinization monitoring index model based on point-to-point mode had the highest accuracy of 0.92. (3) From 2000 to 2020, the soil salinization in the Yellow River Delta showed an aggravating trend. The average value of salinization during the past 20 years was 0.65, which is categorized as severe salinization. The degree of salinization gradually decreased from the northeastern coastal area to the southwestern inland area. (4) The dominant factors affecting soil salinization in different historical periods varied. The research results could provide support for decision-making regarding the precise prevention and control of salinization in the Yellow River Delta.

Most of the previous studies exploring the changing patterns of wetland in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) were conducted based on sparse time-series images, which ignored its severe environmental gradient and rapid evolution process of the wetland. The changes in the dominant factors in the evolution of the wetland in the YRD are not clear. This study used the dense time-series Sentinel-2 images to establish a wetland database of the YRD, and then analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of, and temporal changes in, the wetland during 2015–2022. Finally, the dominant factors of the spatio-temporal evolutions of the wetland were explored and revealed. The results showed the following. (1) During 2015–2022, the wetland in the YRD was dominated by artificial wetland, accounting for 54.02% of the total wetland area in the study area. In 2015–2022, the total wetland area increased by 309.90 km2, including an increase of 222.63 km2 in natural wetlands and 87.27 km2 in artificial wetlands. In the conversion between wetland types, 218.73 km2 of artificial wetlands were converted into natural wetlands, and 75.18 km2 of natural wetlands were converted into artificial wetlands. The patch density of rivers, swamps, and salt pans increased, showing a trend of fragmentation. However, the overall degree of landscape fragmentation in wetlands weakened. The trend of changes in the number of patches and landscape shape index was the same, while the trend of changes in Shannon’s diversity index and Contagion index was completely opposite. (2) Natural factors, such as precipitation (0.51, 2015; 0.65, 2016), DEM (0.57, 2017; 0.47, 2018; 0.49, 2020; 0.46, 2021), vegetation coverage (0.59, 2019), and temperature (0.48, 2022), were the dominant influencing factors of wetland changes in the YRD. The dominant single factor causing the changes in artificial wetlands was vegetation coverage, while socio-economic factors had lower explanatory power, with the average q value of 0.18. (3) During 2015–2022, the interactions between the natural and artificial factors of the wetland changes were mostly nonlinear and showed double-factor enhancement. The interactions between temperature and sunshine hours had the largest explanatory power for natural wetland change, while interactions between precipitation and vegetation coverage, and between temperature and vegetation coverage, had large contribution rates for artificial wetland change. The interactions among natural factors had the greatest impacts on wetland change, followed by interactions between natural factors and socio-economic factors, while interactions among socio-economic factors had more slight impacts on wetland change. The results can provide a scientific basis for regional wetland protection and management.
