Saturated sand foundations are susceptible to liquefaction under dynamic loads. This can result in roadbed subsidence, flotation of underground structures, and other engineering failures. Compared with the traditional foundation reinforcement technology, enzyme-induced calcium carbonate precipitation technology (EICP) is a green environmental protection reinforcement technology. The EICP technology can use enzymes to induce calcium carbonate to cement soil particles and fill soil pores, thus effectively improving soil strength and inhibiting sand liquefaction damage. The study takes EICP-solidified standard sand as the research object and, through the dynamic triaxial test, analyzes the influence of different confining pressure (σ3) cementation times (CT), cyclic stress ratio (CSR), dry density (ρd), and vibration frequency (f) on dynamic strength characteristics. Then, a modified dynamic strength model of EICP-solidified standard sand was established. The results show that, under the same confining pressure, the required vibration number for failure decreases with the increase in dynamic strength, and the dynamic strength increases with the rise in dry density. At the same number of cyclic vibrations, the greater the confining pressure and cementation times, the greater the dynamic strength. When the cementation times are constant, the dynamic strength of EICP-solidified sand decreases with the increase in the vibration number. When cementation times are 6, the dynamic strength of the specimens with CSR of 0.35 is 25.9% and 32.4% higher than those with CSR of 0.25 and 0.30, respectively. The predicted results show that the model can predict the measured values well, which fully verifies the applicability of the model. The research results can provide a reference for liquefaction prevention in sand foundations.

Due to the difficulties in sampling, high sensitivity to humidity, and inconvenience in storage, undisturbed loess is prone to changes in its original structure. Therefore, trace amounts of cement and salt are added to remolded soil to simulate the structure of undisturbed loess. The GDS dynamic three-axial test apparatus was used to investigate the influence of dry density, cement content, and confining pressure (CP) on the dynamic distortion characteristics of artificially structured soil. Based on dynamic triaxial tests, the Hardin–Drnevich (H-D) model was established through fitting analysis. The research findings indicate that increased dry density, cement content, and CP can enhance the soil’s resistance to distortion. Under dynamic loading, the higher the CP, the smaller the damping ratio of the soil. With a dry density of 1.20 g/cm3 and 2% cement, the dynamic modulus of the artificially structured loess is similar to that of undisturbed loess. With a dry density of 1.60 g/cm3 and 2% cement, the CP is 200 kPa, the soil’s dynamic modulus of elasticity (DM-E) peak value is 113.14 MPa, and the damping ratio is 0.258. The good agreement between trial data and the predicted results demonstrates that the H-D hyperbolic model is appropriate for representing the DM-E of artificially structured loess. A three-dimensional model of the dynamic deformation characteristics and microstructure of artificial structural loess under dynamic loads was established. The findings can guide the study of the mechanical properties of loess under dynamic loading.

Water migration occurs in unsaturated loess subgrade due to extreme rainfall, making it prone to subgrade subsidence and other water damage disasters, which seriously impact road safety and sustainable development of the Loess Plateau. The study performed a rainfall test using a compacted loess subgrade model based on a self-developed water migration test device. The effects of extreme rainfall on the water distribution, wetting front, and infiltration rate in the subgrade were systematically explored by setting three rainfall intensities (4.6478 mm/h, 9.2951 mm/h, and 13.9427 mm/h, namely J1 stage, J2stage, and J3 stage), and a lateral water migration model was proposed. The results indicated that the range of water content change areas constantly expands as rainfall intensity and time increase. The soil infiltration rate gradually decreased, and the ratio of surface runoff to infiltration rainfall increased. The hysteresis of lateral water migration refers to the physical phenomenon in which the internal water response of the subgrade is delayed in time and space compared to changes in boundary conditions. The sensor closest to the side of the slope changed first, with the most significant fluctuations. The farther away from the slope, the slower the response and the smaller the fluctuation. The bigger the rainfall intensity, the faster the wetting front moved horizontally. The migration rate at the slope toe is the highest. The migration rate of sensor W3 increased by 66.47% and 333.70%, respectively, in the J3 stage compared to the J2 and J1 stages. The results of the model and the measured data were in good agreement, with the R2 exceeding 0.90, which verifies the reliability of the model. The study findings are important for guiding the prevention and control of disasters caused by water damage to roadbeds in loess areas.

Under traffic load, earthquake load, and wave load, saturated sand foundation is prone to liquefaction, and foundation reinforcement is the key measure to improve its stability and liquefaction resistance. Traditional foundation treatment methods have many problems, such as high cost, long construction period, and environmental pollution. As a new solidification method, enzyme-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) technology has the advantages of economy, environmental protection, and durability. Through a triaxial consolidated undrained shear test under cyclic loading, the impacts of confining pressure (σ3), cementation number (Pc), cyclic stress ratio (CSR), initial dry density (ρd), and vibration frequency (f) on the development law of pore water pressure of EICP-solidified sand are analyzed and then a pore water pressure model suitable for EICP-solidified sand is established. The result shows that as σ3 and CSR increase, the rise rate of pore water pressure of solidified sand gradually accelerates, and with a lower vibration number required for liquefaction, the anti-liquefaction ability of solidified sand gradually weakens. However, as Pc, ρd, and f rise, the increase rate of pore water pressure of solidified sand gradually lowers, the vibration number required for liquefaction increases correspondingly, and its liquefaction resistance gradually increases. The test results are highly consistent with the predictive results, which show that the three-parameter unified pore water pressure model is suitable for describing the development law of A-type and B-type pore water pressure of EICP-solidified sand at the same time. The study results provide essential reference value and scientific significance in guidance for preventing sand foundations from liquefying.

Loess is a distinctly structured soil. Undisturbed loess is prone to geological hazards, such as liquefaction and landslides under dynamic loads. There are also problems such as the inhomogeneity, anisotropy, and disturbance of in situ sampling. An artificial structural loess is prepared to accurately display the dynamic characteristics of undisturbed loess. This study took artificial structural loess as the study object, through dynamic triaxial tests, analyzed the effects of the confining pressure (σ3), dry density (ρd), and cement content (D) on its dynamic strength. Then, a dynamic strength index model of artificial structural loess was established. Our results show that the dynamic strength of artificial structural loess rises with enhanced σ3, ρd, and D. The dynamic cohesion (cd) and dynamic friction angle (φd) increased with the rise of ρd, and D. The dynamic strength of artificial structured loess is closer to that of undisturbed loess when the ρd is 1.60 g/cm3 and D is 2%. The R2 values of the φd and the cd model were 0.97 and 0.98, respectively, fitting the dynamic strength index of artificial structural loess with different D, ρd, and σ3. Our study outcomes can serve as references and guides for engineering construction in loess areas.
