The distribution of species of agro-extractivist interest and their ecological relationship with the physical environment geomorphological and bioclimatic allow supporting strategies aimed at socioeconomic and environmental development. We evaluated the contribution of high spatial resolution topographic variables in ecological niche models and the relationship of the distribution of five tree species with the geomorphological units and bioclimatic variables. The variables related to temperature variation and water availability proved to be important in predicting the areas of occurrence of the target species, with increased suitability of occurrence in regions with higher isothermality, located in the plateau and table geomorphological units. The predictions showed a significant difference when high spatial resolution variables were used, generating a more conservative scenario in the indication of suitable regions for the occurrence of species, important for local scale studies. The geomorphological units of plateau and tableland showed high suitability of occurrence, while the fluvial plains and dissected depressions did not present suitability for the occurrence of the species. The results allow us to strategically define areas with the greatest productive potential and prioritize areas for conservation, management, ecological restoration of forests, and targeting areas for the implementation of community agro-industries, essential for territorial planning within traditional communities.

The prediction of biological processes, which involve growth and plant development, is possible via the adjustment of mathematical models. In forest areas, these models assist in management practices, silviculture, harvesting, and soil fertility. Diameter, basal area, and height are predictors of volume and biomass estimates in forest stands. This study utilized different non-linear models for estimating biomass and nutrient values in the aerial biomass and roots of an unmanaged eucalypt stand in Cerrado dystrophic soil. It was hypothesized that the models would estimate the nutrients of the aboveground biomass and roots after meeting the selection and validation criteria. By statistical analysis of the parameters and subsequent validation, the Schumacher–Hall model was presented to be the best fit for biomass and nutrients. This result confirmed the ability of different variables, including diameter, basal area, and height, to be predicted. Estimating the nutrient values in the aboveground biomass and roots allowed a better understanding of the quality of the vegetal residues that remained in the soil. For dystrophic soils, which occur in the Cerrado, these estimates become even more relevant.

Brazil has a vast reserve of natural forests that belong to the state; hence, the state is responsible for supplying native wood to the market. However, the management in public forests has only begun recently; thus, much research is needed to know about its profitability. This study analyzed the financial feasibility of public forest management by addressing the following aspects: state concession, federal concession, and community forest management. We used the Net Present Value, Annual Equivalent Value, and Average Cost of Production methods to assess financial feasibility and applied the Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the probability of occurrence of NPV values. Community forest management showed profitability and a low occurrence of positive NPV values. The initial subsidies and the absence of royalty payments contributed to their good financial performance. The state and federal forest concessions showed financial unfeasibility and a low probability of profitability, which were justified by a low harvested volume of forest management, a high number of hollow individuals with small dimensions, poor volume estimates, and a high occurrence of species with low commercial values. Financial viability is a critical aspect of public forest management, and the achievement of good results depends on the consideration of several factors and aspects of public forests. Characteristics such as species composition, the distance between the managed areas, and the place of consumption must be considered. Areas that are not financially viable in the current period can be considered for future management and maintenance.

Background and Aims: The conservation of species increasingly demands integrated approaches that rely on collaboration across multiple areas of knowledge. In this context, we adopted a multidisciplinary approach to address key knowledge gaps in the biology and conservation of Vellozia sessilis, an Endangered (EN) and microendemic species native to the highlands of Chapada dos Veadeiros in Central Brazil. Methods: We combined field surveys, citizen science, species distribution modelling, satellite-based estimates of habitat loss and ex situ seed conservation. Key Results: Our fieldwork recorded four new populations of V. sessilis, two of which were identified with the help of citizen science. The species has an area of occupancy (AOO) of 24 km2 and extent of occurrence (EOO) of 88.6 km2. Land use analysis indicated a modest habitat reduction of 1.3 % within the species’ EOO between 1985 and 2023. However, several threats to habitat quality were observed, including invasive alien grasses, human disturbances from tourism and nearby agricultural activities, and fire-induced mortality. A seed conservation protocol was developed to enable long-term ex situ preservation of accessions in germplasm banks. Conclusions: Collaboration among institutions, researchers and citizens was essential at all stages of the study, resulting in the discovery of new populations of V. sessilis and the identification of 29 other rare and/or endangered plant species in the biodiversity hotspot of Chapada dos Veadeiros. This comprehensive strategy confirmed the conservation status of V. sessilis as EN. Despite new occurrence data, the number of locations, AOO and EOO remain below the critical thresholds for the EN category, further reinforcing observed threats in the field. This multidisciplinary approach offers a replicable model for the conservation of other microendemic and threatened plant species facing similar challenges, thereby contributing to broader biodiversity conservation efforts.
