Wave power is an abundant source of energy that can be utilized to produce electricity. Therefore, assessments of wave power resources are being carried out worldwide. An overview of the recent assessments is presented in this paper, revealing the global distribution of these resources. Additionally, a study, which aims to assess the spatial distribution of the Baltic Sea near-shore wave power potential along the coast of Klaipėda (Lithuania), is introduced in this paper. The impacts of the wave propagation direction and decreasing depth on wave power resources were examined using the numerical wind-wave model MIKE 21 NSW. The wave height loss of the design waves propagating to shore was modelled, and the wave power fluxes in the studied depths were calculated using the JONSWAP wave spectrum modified for the Baltic Sea. The results revealed that all waves that propagate to the shore in the Baltic Sea near-shore area along the coast of Klaipėda from 30 m depth to 5 m depth lose at least 30% of their power. Still, most common waves in this area are low, and therefore, they start to lose their power while propagating to the shore at relatively low (10–14 m) depths. To turn this into an advantage the wave power converter would have to work efficiently under low power conditions.

The article analyzes the effect of the Lithuanian legislation on hydropower development via the document content analysis and comparative analysis of legislation and scientific literature. The main focus of the article is on assessing the hydropower potential in line with the environmental legislation and establishing the possible development priorities. Effective legislative activity and energy sector management stimulate the production and consumption of electricity from renewable energy (RE) sources, which serve as an alternative to organic fuel, while in Lithuania, non-harmonized legislation creates barriers for effective and socially beneficial use of hydropower. The environmental policy in Lithuania is one of the most rigorous in the European Union. The unconditional prohibition of dam building in ecologically and culturally valuable rivers means that the untapped hydropower potential in Lithuania is only 5%

This article discusses the environmental issues facing small hydropower plants (SHPs) operating in temperate lowland rivers of Lithuania. The research subjects are two medium head reservoir type hydro schemes considered within a context of the global fleet of SHPs in the country. This research considers general abiotic indicators (flow, level, water retention time in the reservoirs) of the stream that may affect the aquatic systems. The main idea was to test whether the hydrologic regime has been altered by small hydropower dams. The analysis of changes in abiotic indicators is a complex process, including both pre- and post-reservoir construction and post commissioning of the SHPs under operation. Downstream hydrograph (flow and stage) ramping is also an issue for operating SHPs that can result in temporary rapid changes in flow and consequently negatively impact aquatic resources. This ramping has been quantitatively evaluated. To avoid the risk of excessive flow ramping, the types of turbines available were evaluated and the most suitable types for the natural river flow regime were identified. The results of this study are to allow for new hydro schemes or upgrades to use water resources in a more sustainable way.

This paper studies pumped storage plants (PSPs) operating all over the EU, in which the key statistical indicators can be found in the European Hydropower database (HYDI), administered and managed by the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA). The main emphasis is on mixed-type PSPs, which generate electricity from natural inflow; however, pure PSP plants are included in this study. Different analysed, independent PSP data sources (e.g., Eurostat, Eurelectric) show a great variation in the main statistical values (installed capacity and power generation) of the EU pumped storage plant fleet. Presented and analysed PSP layouts and a clear methodology for determining renewable electricity generation from mixed pumped storage plants will avoid ambiguities that actually pertain to power databases to clearly separate renewable and non-renewable electricity generation. Most of the National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAP) submitted to the European Commission do not correctly account for renewable electricity generation due to natural inflow into upper basins of PSPs. Moreover, renewable and non-renewable electricity generation types are mixed up. The operating mixed PSP installed capacity and electricity generation were determined in the EU countries, which is a type of renewable source, and their projected estimates in 2020 are provided.
