In this paper, a finite difference formulation for vibration analysis of structural cables is introduced. This formulation incorporates into a unified solution the effects of the bending stiffness of cable and its sag-extensibility characteristics and provides a tool for accurate determination of vibration mode shapes and frequencies. Various cable-end conditions, variable cross sections, and intermediate springs and/or dampers are taken into account. Using a nondimensional form of this formulation, a parametric study was conducted on the effects of sag-extensibility and bending stiffness. The formulation is verified with available theoretical solutions and compared with finite-element analyses. Capabilities of this formulation are demonstrated through examples. A simple relationship among nondimensional cable parameters is also introduced for the range of parameters applicable to stay cables in cable-stayed bridges. This simple relationship provides an accurate tool for measurement of tension forces in s...

External dampers have been utilized in a number of cable-stayed bridges to suppress transverse cable vibrations. However, simple and accurate damper design recommendations that concurrently consider all important cable parameters are lacking. Previous efforts have been based on the idealization of cables as taut strings. In this paper, the governing differential equation for vibration of cables containing a viscous damper was first converted to a complex eigenvalue problem containing nondimensional cable parameters. Then, a parametric study was conducted involving repeated solutions of the eigenvalue problem for a wide range of nondimensional parameters. Based on the results of the parametric study, the effects of dampers on first mode vibration frequencies and first mode cable damping ratios were presented in nondimensional format. It is shown that for the range of parameters involved in most stay cables, the influence of cable sag is insignificant, whereas the cable bending stiffness can have a signific...

The production of portland cement is among the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions that adversely affect the environment. Identifying sustainable materials to partially replace portland cement in concrete, such as pozzolanic materials, is crucial in addressing this issue. These materials mainly consist of silica and alumina that react with the available calcium hydroxide to form strength-bearing phases such as calcium silicate hydrates. Understanding the degree of pozzolanic reactivity of materials using efficient reactivity test methods is an important consideration. The paper thoroughly reviews the available literature related to direct and indirect pozzolanic reactivity test methods that have been utilized over the years. Direct methods quantify the amount of consumed calcium hydroxide, whereas indirect methods assess changes in the physical properties of the specimen due to pozzolanic reactions. The aim of this paper is to identify affordable, time-saving, and effective direct and indirect methods. Based on this study, the Frattini, electrical conductivity, and pH tests are considered the most time-efficient methods to assess pozzolanic materials. Electrical conductivity and pH tests are also easy to perform. In contrast, other methods are more time-consuming.

Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) has been widely used in engineering applications involving non-contact vibration and sound measurements. This technique has also been used in some biomedical applications including hearing research. The detectable frequencies are in the range of near-DC to 1 GHz or higher. This paper reviews applications of LDV in biomedical engineering and proposes new medical imaging applications based on measuring surface vibrations of tissues and organs. Tests were conducted on human skin using single point and scanning laser vibrometers. These tests suggest that skin vibrations due to the forcing excitation from the heart can be used in imaging of blood flow. The results of these tests illustrate the potential of such vibration measurements in a variety of diagnostic medical imaging applications including blood flow/restrictions, real-time monitoring of blood pressure variations, wound healing, muscle movements, etc. The fact that the measurements can be conducted remotely (non-contact) is an important benefit that adds to the promise of this approach.
