Ankle dysfunction is common in the public following injuries, especially for stroke patients. Most of the current robotic ankle rehabilitation devices are driven by rigid actuators and have problems such as limited degrees of freedom, lack of safety and compliance, and poor flexibility. In this letter, we design a new type of compliant ankle rehabilitation robot redundantly driven by pneumatic muscles (PMs) and cables to provide full range of motion and torque ability for the human ankle with enhanced safety and adaptability, attributing to the PM's high power/mass ratio, good flexibility and lightweight advantages. The ankle joint can be compliantly driven by the robot with full three degrees of freedom to perform the dorsiflexion/plantarflexion, inversion/ eversion, and adduction/abduction training. In order to keep all PMs and cables in tension which is essential to ensure the robot's controllability and patient's safety, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) theorem and analytic-iterative algorithm are utilized to realize a hierarchical force-position control (HFPC) scheme with optimal force distribution for the redundant compliant robot. Experiment results demonstrate that all PMs are kept in tension during the control while the position tracking accuracy of the robot is acceptable, which ensures controllability and stability throughout the compliant robot-assisted rehabilitation training.

A rehabilitation robot plays an important role in relieving the therapists’ burden and helping patients with ankle injuries to perform more accurate and effective rehabilitation training. However, a majority of current ankle rehabilitation robots are rigid and have drawbacks in terms of complex structure, poor flexibility and lack of safety. Taking advantages of pneumatic muscles’ good flexibility and light weight, we developed a novel two degrees of freedom (2-DOF) parallel compliant ankle rehabilitation robot actuated by pneumatic muscles (PMs). To solve the PM’s nonlinear characteristics during operation and to tackle the human-robot uncertainties in rehabilitation, an adaptive backstepping sliding mode control (ABS-SMC) method is proposed in this paper. The human-robot external disturbance can be estimated by an observer, who is then used to adjust the robot output to accommodate external changes. The system stability is guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability theorem. Experimental results on the compliant ankle rehabilitation robot show that the proposed ABS-SMC is able to estimate the external disturbance online and adjust the control output in real time during operation, resulting in a higher trajectory tracking accuracy and better response performance especially in dynamic conditions.

Advances in computing and machine learning (ML) methods have led to a rapid rise in artificial intelligence (AI) research and applications in many fields. AI research benefitted from advances in computation hardware, collection and distribution of large data sets, and proliferation of software techniques. AI techniques include ML for provable results, deep learning for data exploration, reinforcement learning for control, and active learning for adaptive systems. Likewise, AI algorithms can handle large amounts of data, construct unknown representations, and provide a direct link between data and classification for decision making. These unmatched capabilities have been seen as a path to solving hard engineering problems, including that of structural health monitoring (SHM). SHM consists of automating the condition assessment task of civil, health, mechanical, and aerospace systems using measurements obtained from temporary or permanently installed sensors. Often, the systems of interest are geometrically large and/or technically complex, which complicates the development and application of physics-based methods. It follows that AI is seen as a key potential contributor enabling SHM in field applications for data-driven analysis. As with many research endeavors, many concepts using AI for SHM have been explored in the literature. Nevertheless, very few AI methods have been deployed in the context of SHM, which may be due to the lack of available data supporting their capabilities, limited integrated AI-SHM systems capable of providing results to users and operators with decision-making capabilities, or certification of AI methods for safety-critical applications. The objective of this Roadmap publication is to discuss the integration of AI at the system level enabling SHM, including associated challenges and opportunities such as those found in common metrics of concern (e.g. transparency, interpretability, explainability, security, certifiability, etc), with a particular focus on providing a path to research and development efforts that could yield impactful field applications. The overview of available methods and directions will provide the readers with applicability of AI for certain SHM designs (software), availability of common data sets for further AI comparisons (data), and lessons learned in implementation (hardware).

Ankle rehabilitation for an increasing number of strokes is highly demanded, and robot-assisted approach has shown great potential. Since the required movement and force assistances will concurrently change during rehabilitation sessions, the robotic assistances are supposed to be adjusted accordingly. In order to achieve both adaptive torque and synchronous position control for the robot in practice, a novel event-triggered adaptive hybrid torque-position control is proposed in this article for a developed ankle rehabilitation robot driven by pneumatic muscles. In the novel adaptive torque control scheme, the assistive torque adapted to the patient's recovery state is adjusted by a designed robot-assisted rehabilitation index mapping from the clinical assessment scale. The robotic assistance output is online corrected by patient's performance, based on a correcting index calculated by interaction torque and tracking errors. Then, a model-based event-triggered optimal position controller is established and a critic neural network is introduced to reduce the control law update frequency for fast trajectory tracking. The stability of the overall system is proved by the Lyapunov theorem. A series of experiments were conducted on the ankle rehabilitation robot to validate the controller's fast trajectory tracking and adaptive assistance capacity, which can online adjust the robot's assistive torque and allowable movement range for patients at different recovery stages.
