In present study FeAl-LDH@SiO2 adsorbent was used for phosphate and arsenate removal from aqueous solutions. Silica, obtained from rice husks, was used as a substrate for the deposition of FeAl based layered double hydroxides (FeAl-LDH) particles. Synthesis of FeAl-LDH, obtained at Fe/Al molar ratio of 3:1, was performed via co-precipitation and concomitant deposition on SiO2 carrier at 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 LDH/silica mass ratios. The prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET method) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SEM analysis revealed uniform precipitate of LDH on SiO2 substrate, while XRD analysis confirmed crystallographic structure of LDH deposit. Optimization of adsorption properties of synthesized adsorbents confirmed best performances of FeAl-LDH@SiO2, obtained at 3:1 LDH/silica mass ratio. Thus, adsorption experiments were carried out with respect to adsorbent dosage, phosphate and arsenate concentration at initial pH 4. Phosphate concentrations were determined using spectrophotometer and arsenate concentrations were determined using atomic absorption spectrometer. The results showed that the maximum sorption capacities for phosphates was 62.2 mg g-1, and for arsenate was 59.0 mg g-1. Kinetic study confirmed intra-particle diffusion as rate-limiting step, while thermodynamic study indicates feasible and spontaneous process.

Different treatments of fish scales from carps (Cyprinus carpio) (FS)—mechanical milling, modified with cerium dioxide (CeO2) nanoparticles and controlled carbonization of FS and modification with CeO2—were applied to obtain FS, FS-CeO2 and CFS-CeO2 bio-adsorbents. The synthesized adsorbents were used for As(V) and Cr(VI) oxyanion separation from water. Porosity and the amount of CeO2 nanoparticles deposition were controlled using different experimental conditions. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to select optimal parameters for adsorbent synthesis to obtain the highest adsorption capacity. The structural and surface characteristics of the synthesized adsorbents were examined using FTIR, XRD and SEM techniques. The efficiency of pollutant removal was analyzed in terms of varying experimental conditions: the mass of adsorbent, pH, temperature and contact time. RSM was also used to optimize adsorption and desorption processes. The adsorption data, obtained at 25, 35 and 45 °C, were processed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm and Van’t Hoff thermodynamic models. The FS-CeO2 bio-adsorbent showed good adsorption capacities of 92.61 and 65.50 mg g−1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) ion removal, respectively, obtained by using the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters proved that adsorption was a viable, spontaneous and endothermic process. The results from kinetic modeling indicated that both adsorbate and surface functional group concentration determine overall kinetic law with the highest participation of intra-particle diffusion resistance to pollutant transport. Exceptional adsorption and desorption performances of FS-CeO2 in conjunction with the bio-based origin of synthesized adsorbents offer valuable alternatives for the remediation of polluted water.

The study aims to determine the concentration of Al3+, Cd2+ and Mn2+ in the soil and parts of evergreen plant species ? juniper and white pine ? at the surface mine Sastavci (Badanj) and its vicinity in order to determine the possibility of using evergreen plants as an ecological indicator or for phytoremediation. Globally, as a result of various anthropogenic activities such as traffic, agricultural activities, waste incineration, industrial production, mining, etc., it represents a serious problem leading to pollution with toxic and potentially toxic metal cations. One of the more innovative techniques used for the remediation of mining areas is phytoremediation. By applying phytoremediation, certain plant species in polluted areas have the ability to act as accumulators or hyperaccumulators, absorbing toxic metals from the soil through the plant roots and transporting them to the upper parts. This research has been conducted to determine the concentration of Al3+, Cd2+ and Mn2+ at the surface mine itself and its surroundings, as well as to monitor the distribution of metal cations in the system of roots, branches, needles, and fruits of the evergreen plant species ? white pine and juniper. The results showed that the sampled soil was contaminated with Cd in zones I and II for both plant species, since the concentrations exceeded the limit values, while the concentration of Cd in zone III, as well as in the control zone was below the determination limits for both plant species. The concentration of Mn in the soil from the white pine and juniper zone was above the world average in all three zones, as well as in the control zone itself. The soil was most enriched with the analysed elements in the surface mine of zone? I and II. According to the analysis of elements in the parts of white pine, roots, branches, needles and fruits, the highest concentration of Al was detected in the root in zone I, while the lowest concentration was recorded in the fruit (cones) in the control zone, an increased concentration of Cd was recorded in the branches in zones I and II, and the highest concentration of Mn was recorded in needles in zone II. The highest Al concentration was recorded in the juniper root in zone I and the lowest in the juniper fruit in the control zone, the Cd concentration was the highest in the juniper root zone I, and the lowest in the juniper fruit and the highest Mn concentration was recorded in the juniper needles in zone I. Based on the obtained values of the coefficient of biological absorption, it can be concluded that white pine is not suitable for phytoextraction or phytostabilization of the tested elements. The analysis of biological factors (bioconcentration, translocation and bioaccumulation factor) indicated a possible usage of juniper in phytoextraction for Cd only.
