The adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) and anionic textile dyes onto MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and MgAl-LDH coated on bio-silica (b-SiO2) nanoparticles (MgAl-LDH@SiO2) derived from waste rice husks was studied in this work. The material was characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) techniques. The adsorption capacities of MgAl-LDH@SiO2 were increased by 12.2%, 11.7%, 10.6%, and 10.0% in the processes of Cr(VI), Acid Blue 225 (AB-225), Acid Violet 109 (AV-109), and Acid Green 40 (AG-40) dye removal versus MgAl-LDH. The obtained results indicated the contribution of b-SiO2 to the development of active surface functionalities of MgAl-LDH. A kinetic study indicated lower intraparticle diffusional transport resistance. Physisorption is the dominant mechanism for dye removal, while surface complexation dominates in the processes of Cr(VI) removal. The disposal of effluent water after five adsorption/desorption cycles was attained using enzymatic decolorization, photocatalytic degradation of the dyes, and chromate reduction, satisfying the prescribed national legislation. Under optimal conditions and using immobilized horseradish peroxidase (HRP), efficient decolorization of effluent solutions containing AB-225 and AV-109 dyes was achieved. Exhausted MgAl-LDH@SiO2 was processed by dissolution/precipitation of Mg and Al hydroxides, while residual silica was used as a reinforcing filler in polyester composites. The fire-proofing properties of composites with Mg and Al hydroxides were also improved, which provides a closed loop with zero waste generation. The development of wastewater treatment technologies and the production of potentially marketable composites led to the successful achievement of both low environmental impacts and circular economy implementation.

Environmental pollution remains one of the most pressing challenges facing modern society, with the removal of toxic substances from water sources being of particular concern. In this study, a composite material was synthesized by combining Cu-Al layered double hydroxides (CuAl-LDHs) with modified silica particles, aiming to develop an efficient and environmentally friendly adsorbent for the removal of phosphate and arsenate ions from water. CuAl-LDH, with a Cu2+/Al3+ molar ratio of 2:1, was synthesized using the co-precipitation method in the presence of modified silica maintaining an LDH/SiO2 mass ratio of 2:1. The silica particles were functionalized with 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) followed by modification with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to enhance their adsorption properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the successful deposition of CuAl-LDH on the silica surface, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the porous structure of the silica and the uniform deposition of LDH. Adsorption experiments were performed to evaluate the removal efficiency of phosphate and arsenate ions under varying conditions. Equilibrium adsorption capacities, based on the Langmuir isotherm model, were determined to be 44.6 mg·g−1 for phosphate (PO43−) and 32.3 mg·g−1 for arsenate (As(V)) at 25 °C. The sorption behavior was better described by the Freundlich isotherm model, which yielded KF values of 15.4 L·mg−1 for phosphate and 13.9 L·mg−1 for arsenate. Both batch and kinetic experiments confirmed the high adsorption efficiency of the composite, demonstrating its potential as a promising material for water treatment applications.

This paper investigates the using potential of acryl-functionalized kraft lignin (AKL) in reducing the flammability of polymer composites based on recycled unsaturated polyester resins (UPR). Acryl functionalization of kraft lignin was performed by direct esterification of free polyphenolic groups with acryloyl chloride, after what, the AKL was blended in UPR resin synthesized from the polyols obtained by catalytic depolymerization of waste poly(ethylene terephthalate). The AKL was homogenized in UPR resin in different weight ratios: 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 12.5 wt.%. Structural and dynamic-mechanical characteristics of acryl-functionalized kraft lignin and composites were determined using FTIR spectroscopy, dynamicmechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile tests. The influence of functionalization and mass fraction of AKL on tensile and thermal properties of UPR resin was studied. The thermal properties of the composite were tested according to the standard UL-94 method, based on which the highest category of heat-resistant materials is a composite with 12.5 wt.% acylfunctionalized lignin.
