Recently, crowd counting has attracted significant attention, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to its ability to automatically provide accurate crowd numbers in images. To address the challenges of location-level labeling, several transformer-based crowd counting methods have been proposed with only count-level supervision. However, these methods directly use the transformer as an encoder without considering the uneven crowd distribution. To address this issue, we propose CCTwins, a novel transformer-based crowd counting method with only count-level supervision. Specifically, we introduce an adaptive scene consistency attention mechanism to enhance the transformer-based model Twins-SVT-L for feature extraction in crowded scenes. Additionally, we design a multi-level weakly-supervised loss function that generates estimated crowd numbers in a coarse-to-fine manner, making it more appropriate for weakly-supervised settings. Moreover, intermediate features supervised by count-level labels are utilized to fuse multi-scale features. Experimental results on four public datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly-supervised methods, achieving up to a 16.6% improvement in MAE and up to a 13.8% improvement in RMSE across all evaluation settings. Moreover, the proposed CCTwins obtains competitive counting performance, even when compared to the state-of-the-art fully-supervised methods.

In this article, we propose a new cross locality relation network (CLRNet) to generate high-quality crowd density maps for crowd counting in videos. Specifically, a cross locality relation module (CLRM) is proposed to enhance feature representations by modeling local dependencies of pixels between adjacent frames with an adapted local self-attention mechanism. First, different from the existing methods which measure similarity between pixels by dot product, a new adaptive cosine similarity is advanced to measure the relationship between two positions. Second, the traditional self-attention modules usually integrate the reconstructed features with the same weights for all the positions. However, crowd movement and background changes in a video sequence are uneven in real-life applications. As a consequence, it is inappropriate to treat all the positions in reconstructed features equally. To address this issue, a scene consistency attention map (SCAM) is developed to make CLRM pay more attention to the positions with strong correlations in adjacent frames. Furthermore, CLRM is incorporated into the network in a coarse-to-fine way to further enhance the representational capability of features. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed CLRNet in comparison to the state-of-the-art methods on four public video datasets. The codes are available at: https://github.com/Amelie01/CLRNet.

Stance detection is a crucial task in natural language processing and social computing, focusing on classifying expressed attitudes towards specific targets based on the input text. Conventional methods predominantly view stance detection as a task of target-oriented, sentence-level text classification. On popular social media platforms like Twitter, users often express their opinions through hashtags in addition to textual content within tweets. However, current methods primarily treat hashtags as data retrieval labels, neglecting to effectively utilize the semantic information they carry. In this paper, we propose a large language model knowledge-enhanced stance detection framework (LKESD) for stance detection. LKESD contains three main components: an instruction-prompted background knowledge acquisition module (IPBKA) that retrieves background knowledge of hashtags by providing handcrafted prompts to large language models (LLMs); a graph convolutional feature-enhancement module (GCFEM) is designed to extract the semantic representations of words that frequently co-occur with hashtags in the dataset by leveraging textual associations; an a knowledge fusion network (KFN) is proposed to selectively integrate graph representations and LLM features using a prompt-tuning framework. Extensive experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our LKESD method outperforms 2.7% on all setups over compared methods, validating its effectiveness in stance detection tasks.

Non-volatile memory (NVM) provides a scalable and power-efficient solution to replace dynamic random access memory (DRAM) as main memory. However, because of the relatively high latency and low bandwidth of NVM, NVM is often paired with DRAM to build a heterogeneous memory system (HMS). As a result, data objects of the application must be carefully placed to NVM and DRAM for the best performance. In this paper, we introduce a lightweight runtime solution that automatically and transparently manages data placement on HMS without the requirement of hardware modifications and disruptive change to applications. Leveraging online profiling and performance models, the runtime solution characterizes memory access patterns associated with data objects, and minimizes unnecessary data movement. Our runtime solution effectively bridges the performance gap between NVM and DRAM. We demonstrate that using NVM to replace the majority of DRAM can be a feasible solution for future HPC systems with the assistance of a software-based data management.

Stance detection aims to determine the attitude expressed in text towards a given target. Zero-shot stance detection (ZSSD) has emerged to classify stances towards unseen targets during inference. Recent data augmentation techniques for ZSSD increase transferable knowledge between targets through text or target augmentation. However, these methods exhibit limitations. Target augmentation lacks logical connections between generated targets and source text, while text augmentation relies solely on training data, resulting in insufficient generalization. To address these issues, we propose an encoder-decoder data augmentation (EDDA) framework. The encoder leverages large language models and chain-of-thought prompting to summarize texts into target-specific if-then rationales, establishing logical relationships. The decoder generates new samples based on these expressions using a semantic correlation word replacement strategy to increase syntactic diversity. We also analyze the generated expressions to develop a rationale-enhanced network that fully utilizes the augmented data. Experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate our approach substantially improves over state-of-the-art ZSSD techniques. The proposed EDDA framework increases semantic relevance and syntactic variety in augmented texts while enabling interpretable rationale-based learning.
