The presence of pathogens in fecundation hives represents a source of infection for queen bees. The objective of this investigation was to determine the prevalence of Varroa, Nosema, and Acarapis in hives for the production of mating nuclei (HPMN). 239 samples of adult bees of 17 apiaries of a queen bee breeding system were analyzed during the winter and summer of 2016. The prevalence of Varroa and Nosema was higher in winter (79.1% and 55.4%, respectively) than in summer (65.9% and 33.0%, respectively). However, Acarapis was not found. Varroa infestation was 2.55 ± 0.82 mites/100 bees, and Nosema 145 ± 24 × 103 spores/bee (Standard deviation of the mean). The probability of finding Nosema, in the presence of Varroa, was 3.8 and 1.1 times higher in winter than in summer, respectively. We, therefore, conclude that HPMN has a higher incidence of varroasis and nosemosis during winter and nosemosis increases in the presence of varroasis. We, on the other hand, consider acariosis, absent in the region of study.

The present study evaluates garlic powder (GP) effects on growth performance, feed utilization, gill parasitic treatment, and monogenean diversity. Thus, a trial was performed under controlled conditions with 84 juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (39.8 ± 8.8 g initial weight), from culture ponds with monogenean parasite presence for 30 days. Four balanced diets in protein (32.5%) and lipids (6.4%) with GP inclusion levels of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% were formulated, manufactured, and supplied daily at approximately 6.5% body weight/tank. The GP diets, compared to the Control (without GP), indicated that the three inclusion levels did not affect the water quality, survival, growth performance, and feed utilization parameters (p > 0.05). No differences were observed in the parasitological index of prevalence (20–25%), mean intensity (9.6–28), and mean abundance (2.7–5.3) among the experimental diets (p > 0.05), evidencing no effect by inclusion level. Efficacy among GP diets indicated a potential decrease in parasite number (13.4–45.6%) but not all monogenean gill parasites. In conclusion, GP diets did not affect the Nile tilapia survival, growth performance, and feed utilization parameters; therefore, its use is suggested as a preventive alternative for monogenean gill parasites.

This research was conducted to know the effect of 125 mg of recombinant bovine somatotropin (bST) administered at weaning, on the productivity of sheep Pelibuey. 60 clinically healthy ewes with a body condition of 2.5 to 3 were used. The animals were divided into two groups, the treaty (30) and the control (30), at the same time both were subdivided into two groups, the flock that had one parturition (15), and with more than two (15). All females were synchronized under the same scheme of 12 days with an intravaginal sponge, 20 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), and support of 15 mg of PGF2a administered two days before the removal of the sponge. The bST was administered to the treated group the seventh day of synchronization, subcutaneously. Females were mating by the ram, after detection of estrus sinology. At 45 days the pregnancy diagnosis was performed by ultrasound and prolificacy was confirmed at the birth moment. It is concluded that under the conditions in which the experiment was performed bST showed no significant statistical effect in newly weaned females, but it showed minimal gains in the indicators of prolificacy and multiple births in animals treated with Somatotropin.
