This article explores the advancements in biodegradable food packaging materials derived from wheat. Wheat, a predominant global cereal crop, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional single-use plastics through its starch, gluten, and fiber components. This study highlights the fabrication processes of wheat-based materials, including solvent casting and extrusion, and their applications in enhancing the shelf life and quality of packaged foods. Recent innovations demonstrate effectiveness in maintaining food quality, controlling moisture content, and providing microbiological protection. Despite the promising potential, challenges such as moisture content and interfacial adhesion in composites remain. This review concludes with an emphasis on the environmental benefits and future trends in wheat-based packaging materials.
Jackfruit is one of the major fruits cultivated in many Asian countries. Jackfruit seeds are generally disposed of into the environment, which causes an environmental concern that leads to biowaste accumulation. The seeds have excellent nutritional value, such as carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, and bioactive compounds. Bioactive compounds, such as phenolic, can be recovered from jackfruit seeds that could add value to the food and pharmaceutical industry. Thus, this study focused on utilizing subcritical water to extract the phenolic compounds from jackfruit seeds and correlate them with antioxidant activity (AA). The extraction of phenolic compounds was studied at different temperatures and extraction times. The highest total phenolic compounds (TPC) and AA were obtained by treating the jackfruit seed powder at 210 °C, 30 min, and 15% solid loading under subcritical water extraction (SWE) with 1.84 mg GAE/100 g (TPC) and 86% (AA). High correlation between the extracted TPC and AA of the jackfruit seed extracts was obtained (R2 = 0.96), indicating a significant positive relationship between TPC and AA. A higher amount of TPC was obtained via SWE as compared to Soxhlet extraction (1 h:0.53 mg GAE/100 g and 4 h:1.20 mg GAE/100 g). More pores were detected on the surface of the sample treated by SWE than using Soxhlet extraction. Thus, jackfruit seed extracts can be potentially beneficial in the fortification of fermented dairy or meat products.
This article discusses the method of obtaining phosphorus-containing components from cottrel dust from the industrial wastes of the New-Jambul phosphorus plant. Accumulated industrial waste heavily pollutes the environment and has a direct impact on all living things. Therefore, their processing is of special interest for the state and grant programs have been allocated in order to obtain new valuable substances. In order to solve these problems, a number of experimental works have been carried out to study the chemical and mineralogical composition and chemical structures during the heat treatment of cottrel dust—the waste of phosphorus production. The optimal parameters of the process of obtaining mono-calcium phosphate from cottrel dust were determined and the process of crystallization of mono-calcium phosphate was studied. A method has been developed for obtaining a phosphorus-containing fertilizer based on cottrel dust from the industrial waste of the New-Jambul phosphorus plant by means of sulfuric acid solutions. The advantage of the resulting phosphorus-containing fertilizer is that it has a high solubility and digestibility of phosphorus plants. They are also high in phosphorus-containing substances that ensure the growth and yield of agricultural plants. The developed method for obtaining phosphorus-containing fertilizers is aimed at reducing the accumulated industrial waste, which in turn allows you to regulate and improve the environmental situation in the region.
This study focused on monitoring phosphorus (P) concentrations in the water of the Ramsar site, Lake Vembanad, with a special focus on the mouths of the river bodies draining into the lake, a known hotspot for eutrophication. Four phosphorus fractions—total reactive phosphorus (TRP), total acid hydrolysable phosphorus (TAHP), total organic phosphorus (TOP), and total phosphorus (TP)—were monitored during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The results revealed high levels of all monitored phosphorus fractions, with an average concentration exceeding 300 ppb P across both seasons, indicating a highly eutrophic state. Notably, TRP, TOP, and TP showed high concentrations in both the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods. These data suggest significant phosphorus input into the lake’s surface water, potentially triggering excessive algal growth and threatening the biodiversity of this rich wetland ecosystem.
The aim of the research is the production of activated carbon from the plum pit shells in a drum-type steam-gas furnace. To study the production of activated carbon, methods were used based on the study of individual patterns, analysis of the specific surface, determination of the porous structure, analysis of the structural-sorption and physicochemical characteristics of the pit shell. The novelty is research on determining the characteristics of activated carbon and the effect of thermal activation temperature in a flow of CO2 and H2O in a mass ratio of 20:80 on the pore volume. During activation at a process temperature of 780 °C, the surface was destroyed by powerful thermal activation, and as a result, micropores of 8–10 μm formed and a cell configuration arose. The adsorption kinetics showed that the maximum efficiency is achieved at a duration of 0.5 h for chloroform-extracted and 2 h for hexane-extracted oil products, as well as an adsorbent dose of 4 kg/m3. The results obtained in the research of the process of oily wastewater treatment showed that the effect of treatment with the activated plum pit shells (95.5%) is greater than the effect of treatment with coagulants and clays (88.5–71)%.
The aim of this work is to develop an adsorber with a fixed bed of adsorbent and a mathematical model of the adsorption bed. On the basis of the theory of fractal clusters, an equation for calculating the layer porosity that takes into account the average cluster radius, the fractal dimension of the cluster structure and the anisotropy index of the adsorbent layer is proposed. The adsorption mechanism in the layer was established, and the proportionality coefficients were estimated based on the tetrahedral packing of grains in the layer. Based on the analysis of the movement of the carrier through the adsorption layer and its deformation, an equation that describes the change in the porosity of the granular layer when the water flow moves through it, depending on the proportionality coefficients, is proposed. An equation that made it possible to calculate the change in the porosity of the layer in comparison with the porosity of the stationary stacking was obtained. An effective design for the adsorber that made it possible to increase the efficiency of using the structure of porous adsorption layers was developed. Equations of the heat and mass transfer taking into account the granule shape coefficient, effective diffusion coefficient and mass transfer coefficient were derived. These equations establish the relationship between the average distance between active centers on the adsorption surface and the degree of filling of the adsorption surface with the adsorbed component.
