A modern power grid needs to become smarter in order to provide an affordable, reliable, and sustainable supply of electricity. For these reasons, considerable activity has been carried out in the United States and Europe to formulate and promote a vision for the development of future smart power grids. However, the majority of these activities emphasized only the distribution grid and demand side leaving the big picture of the transmission grid in the context of smart grids unclear. This paper presents a unique vision for the future of smart transmission grids in which their major features are identified. In this vision, each smart transmission grid is regarded as an integrated system that functionally consists of three interactive, smart components, i.e., smart control centers, smart transmission networks, and smart substations. The features and functions of each of the three functional components, as well as the enabling technologies to achieve these features and functions, are discussed in detail in the paper.

Accurate and reliable forecast of wind power is essential to power system operation and control. However, due to the nonstationarity of wind power series, traditional point forecasting can hardly be accurate, leading to increased uncertainties and risks for system operation. This paper proposes an extreme learning machine (ELM)-based probabilistic forecasting method for wind power generation. To account for the uncertainties in the forecasting results, several bootstrap methods have been compared for modeling the regression uncertainty, based on which the pairs bootstrap method is identified with the best performance. Consequently, a new method for prediction intervals formulation based on the ELM and the pairs bootstrap is developed. Wind power forecasting has been conducted in different seasons using the proposed approach with the historical wind power time series as the inputs alone. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for probabilistic forecasting of wind power generation with a high potential for practical applications in power systems.

This paper proposes a novel framework for home energy management (HEM) based on reinforcement learning in achieving efficient home-based demand response (DR). The concerned hour-ahead energy consumption scheduling problem is duly formulated as a finite Markov decision process (FMDP) with discrete time steps. To tackle this problem, a data-driven method based on neural network (NN) and Q-learning algorithm is developed, which achieves superior performance on cost-effective schedules for HEM system. Specifically, real data of electricity price and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation are timely processed for uncertainty prediction by extreme learning machine (ELM) in the rolling time windows. The scheduling decisions of the household appliances and electric vehicles (EVs) can be subsequently obtained through the newly developed framework, of which the objective is dual, i.e. to minimize the electricity bill as well as the DR induced dissatisfaction. Simulations are performed on a residential house level with multiple home appliances, an EV and several PV panels. The test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed data-driven based HEM framework.

Smart-grid development calls for effective solutions, such as electric vehicles (EVs), to meet the energy and environmental challenges. To facilitate large-scale EV applications, optimal locating and sizing of charging stations in smart grids have become essential. This paper proposes a multiobjective EV charging station planning method which can ensure charging service while reducing power losses and voltage deviations of distribution systems. A battery capacity-constrained EV flow capturing location model is proposed to maximize the EV traffic flow that can be charged given a candidate construction plan of EV charging stations. The data-envelopment analysis method is employed to obtain the final optimal solution. Subsequently, the well-established cross-entropy method is utilized to solve the planning problem. The simulation results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method based on a case study consisting of a 33-node distribution system and a 25-node traffic network system.

This paper presents an advanced control strategy for the rotor and grid side converters of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine (WT) to enhance the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability according to the grid connection requirement. Within the new control strategy, the rotor side controller can convert the imbalanced power into the kinetic energy of the WT by increasing its rotor speed, when a low voltage due to a grid fault occurs at, e.g., the point of common coupling (PCC). The proposed grid side control scheme introduces a compensation term reflecting the instantaneous DC-link current of the rotor side converter in order to smooth the DC-link voltage fluctuations during the grid fault. A major difference from other methods is that the proposed control strategy can absorb the additional kinetic energy during the fault conditions, and significantly reduce the oscillations in the stator and rotor currents and the DC bus voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy has been demonstrated through various simulation cases. Compared with conventional crowbar protection, the proposed control method can not only improve the LVRT capability of the DFIG WT, but also help maintaining continuous active and reactive power control of the DFIG during the grid faults.

The prevalence of distributed energy resources encourages the concept of an electricity ‘Prosumer (Producer and Consumer)’. This paper proposes a distributed electricity trading system to facilitate the peer-to-peer electricity sharing amongst prosumers. The proposed system includes two layers. In the first layer, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) is designed to support the prosumer network, and an agent coalition mechanism is proposed to ena-ble the prosumers to form coalitions and negotiate electricity trading. In the second layer, a Blockchain (BC) based transaction settlement mechanism is proposed to enable the trusted and secure settlement of electricity trading transactions formed in the first layer. Simulations are conducted based on the Java Agent Development Environment (JADE) to validate the proposed electricity trading process.
