Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with growth retardation and delayed pubertal development in the pediatric population. This study aimed to investigate the impact of CKD on growth and pubertal development in children and adolescents by considering factors such as dialysis and transplantation. A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in a cohort of 52 pediatric patients aged 0 to 18; the patients had been diagnosed with stages 2 to 5 CKD and were undergoing dialysis treatment or kidney transplantation. Demographic information, clinical characteristics, pubertal development, and treatment methods were also collected. The relationships between these factors and pubertal development were also analyzed. This study revealed significant delays in growth and pubertal development in children and adolescents with CKD. The mean age at menarche was 12.79, and 32.8% of the patients had primary amenorrhea. Patients on dialysis and those who underwent transplantation displayed further growth and pubertal outcomes. Factors such as the CKD stage (r = 0.35; P = .02) and age at diagnosis (r = ‐0.28; P = .01) significantly influenced the relationship between CKD and pubertal development. The results of this study were associated with delayed pubertal growth in this population. Our findings underscore the significant impact of CKD on the growth and pubertal development of children and adolescents. The early detection, intervention, and comprehensive management of CKD and its complications could aid in improving growth and pubertal outcomes in this vulnerable population.

Cystinuria, characterized by defective renal absorption of cystine causing recurrent nephrolithiasis, demands ongoing management. This study examines the effects of COVID-19-related disruptions in tiopronin availability on the clinical outcomes of pediatric cystinuria patients. This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of 11 pediatric patients with cystinuria, followed from 2001 to 2023. Patients were diagnosed using urine microscopy/biochemistry and stone composition analysis. Clinical outcomes, including renal function and stone status, were assessed using serial ultrasonographic evaluations and 24-hour urinary cystine measurements. At diagnosis, the median age was 13 months, and 63.6% were female. Acute kidney injury was observed in 36.4% of patients, with 27.3% requiring emergency dialysis. The interruption of tiopronin treatment led to significant renal function deterioration and increased stone burden, as evidenced by an increase in the median number of kidney stones from 2 (IQR: 1–3) to 4 (IQR: 2–5, p = 0.045) and a rise in 24-hour urinary cystine levels from 286 mg/1.73 m² (IQR: 82–552.5) to 434 mg/1.73 m² (IQR: 198–854, p = 0.043). Data prior to the interruption showed a median glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 80.4 mL/min/1.73 m² and creatinine levels of 2.47 mg/dL. After resuming tiopronin, there was a notable improvement to a median GFR of 161 mL/min/1.73 m² and creatinine levels of 0.48 mg/dL. Managing cystinuria during the pandemic underscored the critical role of continuous access to medications like tiopronin in preventing renal deterioration. Developing strategies to ensure an uninterrupted drug supply during global health emergencies is crucial for managing chronic conditions such as cystinuria.

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) significantly contribute to pediatric morbidity, often necessitating ureterorenal surgery. This study explored the relationship between genetic mutations, renal surgery requirements, and prenatal, postnatal, and parental risk factors in children with CAKUT. A retrospective analysis of 651 children diagnosed with CAKUT included patient demographics, parental risk factors, ultrasound findings, genetic mutations, and surgical incidence. Antenatal ultrasounds showed normal findings in 32.1%, hydronephrosis in 46.9%, and other abnormalities in 21% of cases. Surgical intervention correlated with higher hydronephrosis reduction than non-intervention. Genetic mutations were identified in 5.4% of cases, with 24.6% requiring surgery. Low neonatal birth weight (odds ratio [OR] = 0.98, p < 0.001), advanced maternal age (OR = 1.06, p < 0.001), and postnatal abnormal ultrasound findings (OR = 2.62, p < 0.001) were associated with increased genetic mutation risks. Antenatal hydronephrosis (OR = 3.85, p < 0.001) and postnatal urinary tract infections (OR = 4.85, p < 0.001) increased the likelihood of surgical intervention. Neonatal birth weight, maternal age, and postnatal ultrasound findings were identified as independent risk factors for genetic mutations, while no significant link was found between these genetic factors and the need for surgery. Surgical needs were associated with urinary tract infections and antenatal hydronephrosis, indicating that timely surgical intervention may benefit these patients.

Aims: The purpose of this current investigation is twofold: first, to review the available literature published in the last twenty years on pediatric nephrolithiasis; and second, to evaluate the progression of research on this topic during the indicated period. In this respect, through bibliometric analysis the present study aims to reveal trends, crucial authors, important institutions and outstanding journals of this line of research. It also takes an attempt to compare the increasing trend of publication productivity and citation frequency and the distribution of the research outputs across the countries/regions of the world to map the progress and potential prospects of pediatric kidney stone research. Methods: The present study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis of knowledge production. In pediatric kidney stone from 2004 to 2023 using WoS Core Collection. Articles were searched using the term “Kidney Stones in Children” including all articles, reviews and papers indexed, reviews and conference papers. The examination focused on the overall publication output, number of citations received, and journal citation; with methods including keyword frequency, bibliographic coupling, co-citation analysis, and co-authorship networks. Element positions, co-occurrence frequencies, and clusters were developed from the data source by using VOSviewer software. The study covered publication distribution, citation behaviour, keyword frequencies, and collaboration map. Results: According to the presented research, the level of academic interest in this topic has risen dramatically over the years, and its popularity peaked in 2020. This result is expected because leading academic centres and name-referenced universities like University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia contributed significantly to the current literature. Ten most preferred journals are Journal of Urology, Journal of Pediatric Urology and many more. The findings reveal the overall international cooperation with especial emphasis on relations between institutions in the US and European countries. Carrying out the keyword analysis, authors have determined that “urolithiasis”, “nephrolithiasis”, and “kidney stones” are the most topical concerns. Aside from general surgery, much of the most frequently cited research is relevant to surgical practices and dietary recommendations. The purpose of this review is to enhance the understanding of the tendencies of the studies the most active contributors and cooperation patterns in the pediatric kidney stones. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis reveals a significant rise in pediatric kidney stones research, peaking in 2020. Key contributors include the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, with strong international collaborations. Original research articles and top journals, like the Journal of Urology, remain central. The U.S. leads in contributions, with notable input from Turkish institutions.

Aims: Childhood urinary stone disease (USSD) varies in frequency based on several factors such as, gender, age, body mass index, geography, diet, genetic disorders, and kidney anatomy. This study aims to retrospectively evaluate the demographic and clinical characteristics, symptoms, diagnostic methods, predisposing factors, associated urinary system anomalies, treatments, and prognosis of patients diagnosed with USSD in our clinic over the past three years. Methods: This mixed-methods study retrospectively examined the records of 175 patients diagnosed with USSD between April 2020 and May 2023. Demographic data, symptoms, laboratory results, imaging findings, and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Additionally, qualitative data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with 10 volunteer participants to understand the impact of symptoms on their lives. Results: Among the 175 pediatric patients diagnosed with urolithiasis, 120 (68.5%) were symptomatic, with common complaints such as irritability (29.1%), pain (18.2%), vomiting (23.4%), and macroscopic hematuria (20%). Significant differences were observed in symptoms based on age and stone size, with older children more likely to experience pain and hematuria, while younger children showed more irritability (p
