Compensation topologies play an essential role in wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for electric vehicles (EVs). Specifically, the double-sided ${LCC}$ compensated (DS- ${LCC}$ ) topology has been widely adopted, owing to its inherent advantages, such as load-independent constant current (CC) output, low sensitivity to load variation, and high freedom in parameter design. However, large resonant devices in the DS- ${LCC}$ topology lower the system efficiency and increase the complexity of optimal parameter tuning. Therefore, in this study, the parameters of the DS- ${LCC}$ compensation topology are reconfigured by adjusting the ratios of its two compensation inductances without changing the specified system-level parameters, such as the loosely coupled transformer (LCT), operating frequency, and specified CC outputs. The system performance under each case is analyzed and compared in detail, based on which, an asymmetric parameter-design method is proposed to optimize the system efficiency. To verify the reasonability of the proposed tuning method, a 6.6-kW experimental prototype is configured, and comparative experiments are conducted. The experimental results indicate that, compared with the conventional method, the proposed parameter-tuning method improves the system efficiency under overall load conditions, especially under light loads.

The use of wireless power transfer technology in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems is rapidly improving in different application areas. The main limitations of electric-powered UAVs are their charging range and stability in dynamic conditions. To solve these, this paper proposes a hybrid control method based on DC-link and switched capacitor control with a fixed operating frequency. The DC-link voltage is regulated by the boost PFC converter to smoothen the output voltage, and the switched capacitor is used to dynamically compensate for self-inductance variations under dynamic coupling conditions. The output voltage stabilization and near-unity power factor of the input impedance can be achieved by applying the hybrid control method. Therefore, efficiency improvement can be achieved. Furthermore, the proposed control method can also be applied to systems with large coupling variations. To verify the proposed control method, a 500-W prototype was set up in the laboratory, and the experimental results proved that the control method could ensure a stable output voltage with horizontal and vertical offsets of 200 mm and 62 mm respectively. Additionally, the results show that the maximum efficiency of the proposed control method is 91.9%, demonstrating that the proposed method effectively improves the efficiency.

In inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, series–series (S-S) and double capacitances and inductances–series (LCCL-S) compensation topologies are widely utilized. In this study, the basic characteristics of S-S and LCCL-S are analyzed and compared in the tuning state. In addition, considering the universality of detuning, and because the two topologies have the same secondary structures, the voltage and current stress on components, input impedances, voltage gains, and output powers of S-S and LCCL-S are mainly analyzed and compared in the detuning state, which is caused by variations in the secondary compensation capacitance. To compare the efficiency of the two topologies and verify the comparative analysis, comparative experiments based on a 2.4-kW IPT experimental prototype are conducted. The comparative result shows that the S-S compensation topology is more sensitive to load variations and less sensitive to secondary compensation capacitance variations than LCCL-S. Both in the tuning and detuning states, the efficiency of the S-S topology is higher in high-power electric vehicle (EV) applications, and the efficiency of LCCL-S is higher in low-power.

In low power energy storage systems, to match the voltage levels of the low-voltage battery side and high-voltage direct current (DC) bus, a high voltage gain converter with bidirectional operation is required. In this system, the cost effectiveness of the design is a critical factor; therefore, the system should be designed using a small number of components. This paper proposes a set of bidirectional converters with high voltage gain range based on the integration of the boost converter with a Ćuk converter, single ended primary inductor converter (Sepic), and buck-boost converter. The proposed converters consist of a small number of components with a high voltage gain ratio. Detailed comparisons are made with respect to the operating mode, number of components, voltage, and current ripple and efficiency. The efficiency of proposed converters are higher than the conventional converters in entire power range, and 6% higher efficiency can be achieved in large duty cycle by calculating loss analysis. To verify performances of the proposed converters, three 200-W prototypes of the converters are developed under the same experimental conditions. The results revealed that converter I exhibits the highest efficiency in the boost mode (92%) and buck mode (92.2%). The experimental results are shown to verify the feasibility and performances of the set of converters.

When driving the piezoelectric transducer (PT: piezo transducer), which is a key device, it is important for the ultrasonic system (using ultrasonic waves of 20 kHz or higher) to operate at a resonant frequency that can maximize the conversion of mechanical energy (vibration) from electrical energy. The resonant frequency of the PT changes during the actual operation according to the load fluctuations and environmental conditions. Therefore, to maintain a stable output in an ultrasonic system, it is essential to track the resonant frequency in a short time. In particular, fast resonant frequency tracking (RFT: resonant frequency tracking) is an important factor in the medical ultrasonic system, i.e., the system applied in this thesis. The reason is that in the case of a medical ultrasonic system, heat-induced skin necrosis, etc., may cause the procedure to be completed within a short period of time. Therefore, tracking the RFT time for maximum power transfer is an important factor; in this thesis, we propose a new high-speed RFT method. The proposed method finds the whole system resonance frequency by using the transient phenomenon (underdamped response characteristic) that appears in an impedance system, such as an ultrasonic generator, and uses this to derive the mechanical resonance frequency of the PT. To increase the accuracy of the proposed method, parameter fluctuations of the pressure of the PT, the equivalent circuit impedance analysis of the PT, and a MATLAB simulation were performed. Through this, the correlation between the resonance frequency of the ultrasonic system, including the LC filter with nonlinear characteristics and the mechanical resonance frequency of the PT, was analyzed. Based on the analyzed results, a method for tracking the mechanical resonance frequency that can transfer the maximum output to the PT is proposed in this thesis. Experiments show that using the proposed high-speed RFT method, the ultrasonic system can track the mechanical resonance frequency of the PT with high accuracy in a short time.

The three-phase four-leg inverter (TPFLI) provides unbalanced voltage to a load or injects unbalanced current to a grid to compensate unbalanced current. However, it has a high switching loss because of the fourth leg. This paper presents a discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) method that minimizes the per-phase switching loss of the TPFLI. The discontinuous three-dimensional space-vector pulse-width modulation (3D SVPWM) can be implemented in the TPFLI by injecting the same offset voltage as the conventional DPWM of three-phase three-leg inverter (TPTLI). However, the conventional DPWM is unsuitable for TPFLI because of its unbalanced current. We demonstrate that the discontinuous phase can be chosen according to the offset direction when a voltage reference vector is specified. Based on this result, a new per-phase minimum-loss discontinuous PWM strategy is developed and compared with the conventional DPWM. This method can also be applied to the TPTLI and implemented by injecting an offset voltage generated using the inverter phase voltage reference and phase current. Furthermore, the lifespan of a TPFLI can be extended by preventing deterioration of a specific leg. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiments.
