Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can improve the storage properties of modified asphalt by enhancing the interfacial adhesion of recycled polyethylene (RPE) and base asphalt. In this study, the interaction of CNT/RPE asphalt was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The base asphalt was examined using a 12-component molecular model and verified by assessing the following properties: its four-component content, elemental contents, radial distribution function (RDF) and glass transition temperature. Then, the adhesion properties at the interface of the CNT/RPE-modified asphalt molecules were studied by measuring binding energy. The molecular structural stability of CNTs at the interface between RPE and asphalt molecules was analyzed through the relative concentration distribution. The motion of molecules in the modified asphalt was studied in terms of the mean square displacement (MSD) and diffusion coefficient. The results showed that CNTs improved the binding energy between RPE and base asphalt. CNTs not only weakened the repulsion of RPE with asphaltenes and resins, but also promoted the interaction of RPE with light components, which facilitated the compatibility of RPE with the base asphalt. The change in the interaction affected the molecular motion, and the molecular diffusion coefficient in the CNT/RPE-modified asphalt system was significantly smaller than that of RPE-modified asphalt. Moreover, the distribution of the asphaltene component was promoted by CNTs, resulting in the enhancement of the storage stability of RPE-modified asphalt. The property indexes indicated that the storage stability was significantly improved by CNTs, and better viscoelastic properties were also observed. Our research provides a foundation for the application of RPE in pavement engineering.

To further promote the development of research on direct-to-plant SBS-modified asphalt, this article analyzes the development of direct-to-plant SBS modifiers. Starting from the material composition and mechanism of action, common direct-to-plant SBS modifiers were analyzed and classified into four categories based on their mechanism of action, including the instant dissolution principle, intramolecular lubrication principle, non-granulation principle, and vulcanization principle. From the evaluation of the modification effect, the method of studying the performance of direct-to-plant SBS-modified asphalt is summarized, including fluorescence microscopy, AFM technology, and molecular dynamics simulation technology. From the perspective of practical application, the construction process of direct-to-plant SBS-modified asphalt was discussed, including the design stage, raw material preparation stage, mix design stage, and on-site construction stage. The results show that common direct-to-plant SBS modifiers are primarily SBS with a small particle size (less than 200 mesh) or specific model, supplemented by additives (EVA, naphthenic oil, sulfur, petroleum resin, etc.), which improve melting efficiency and lubricity or make it undergo vulcanization reaction, change the proportion of asphalt components, and improve stability. In the evaluation of the modification effect of direct-to-plant SBS-modified asphalt, the disparity of the direct-to-plant SBS modifier is determined by observing the particle residue after dry mixing. Macroscopic indexes of modified asphalt and modified asphalt mixture are used to determine the cross-linking effect of direct-to-plant SBS modifier and asphalt, and the modification mechanism and modification effect of wet SBS modifier are evaluated at the microscopic level. The development of direct-to-plant SBS-modified asphalt should combine the characteristics of direct-to-plant SBS modifiers and the attributes of field application, targeted research, and the development of high-performance direct-to-plant SBS modifiers and complete production technologies applicable to different regions, strengthen the improvement of modification effect evaluation, and form a complete theoretical system.

A method of deicing using microwave heating is proposed to make scientific and economical road deicing in a cold area, and to make up for deficiencies in the existing methods for melting snow and ice. This paper proposes to define microwave deicing efficiency as the heating rate of a concrete surface when heated to 0 °C (the efficiency of deicing is equal to the difference divided by heating time, which is between 0 °C and the initial temperature at the junction of ice and concrete). Based on the mechanism of microwave heating and deicing, a method combining the finite element simulation model with indoor experiments was proposed to study the deicing efficiency of microwaves, and the effects of different microwave frequencies and different road structure materials on microwave deicing efficiency were analyzed. The results show that the microwave frequency and road structure materials have a great influence on microwave deicing. For asphalt concrete, the ice melting efficiency of 5.8 GHz is 4.31 times that of 2.45 GHz, but the heating depth is less than that of 2.45 GHz. At 2.45 GHz, the melting efficiency of cement concrete is 3.89 times that of asphalt concrete. At 5.8 GHz, the melting efficiency of cement concrete is 5.23 times that of asphalt concrete. Through the consistency of the simulation and experimental results, the validity of the simulation model based on the finite element theory is verified. The results provide theoretical guidance and a practical basis for future applications of microwave deicing.

Five types of material, styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS), ethyl-vinyl-acetate (EVA), naphthenic oil, maleic anhydride grafted ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA-g-MAH) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) were used as the raw ingredients for manufacturing direct-to-plant SBS in this paper. Thirteen kinds of direct-to-plant SBS with different EVA/SBS and naphthenic oil/SBS were prepared as well as the processes diagrammatic sketch of dispersion and swelling of direct-to-plant SBS modifier in bitumen were discussed. Microscopic images of direct-to-plant SBS modified bitumen with different components were obtained using fluorescence microscopy. The micro-images were analysed and quantified with MATLAB software. The influence of key components on the micro-morphology of direct-to-plant SBS-modified bitumen is discussed, followed with the tests on melting points and the melting indexes of direct-to-plant SBS with different EVA/SBS and naphthenic oil/SBS. The performances test of bitumen and bituminous mixture modified by these direct-to-plant SBS were also conducted. Results show that, with the ratio improvement of EVA/SBS or naphthenic oil/SBS, the number of the pixel dot number of area (SBS) in microscopic images increased. Enlargement of the pixel dot number of centre line elongate and the structure fineness was observed, indicating that the dispersion and swelling effect of the SBS modifier in bitumen had been improved. Meanwhile, the macro index, such as the melting point and melting index of direct-to-plant SBS, was also improved corresponding to the increase of EVA/SBS ratio or naphthenic oil/SBS ratio. With the addition of EVA or naphthene oil content, penetration and ductility of direct-to-plant SBS modified bitumen received gradual enhancement, but the softening point and viscosity were found out to be decreased. The high-temperature and low-temperature performances of direct-to-plant SBS modified bituminous mixture can be effectively improved by adding EVA or naphthenic oil. By meeting the required performances of direct-to-plant SBS, modified bitumen and bituminous mixture, the component of direct-to-plant SBS is recommended as, SBS:EVA:naphthenic oil:EVA-g-MAH:BHT is 1:0.1–0.5:0.05–0.2:0.03:0.05. For the compatibleness of SBS with different bitumen are different, necessary tests verification is recommended to be carried out prior to usage.

The recycling of waste tires is a major environmental problem facing mankind, and the addition of crumbed waste tire rubber (CWTB) to the base asphalt is an extremely promising recycling method. However, the modification mechanism of CWTB to asphalt is not well understood, which restricts the development of CWTB modified asphalt. In this study, the mechanism of CWTB modification of asphalt was explored by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. After verifying the asphalt reasonableness using glass transition temperature, CWTB modified asphalt was simulated and experimented. The results showed that CWTB enhanced the high temperature performance of the base asphalt. The microscopic mechanism by which this phenomenon occurs is that CWTB has the largest binding energy with the aromatics (1150–1350 kcal/mol), followed by the saturates (740–830 kcal/mol), followed by the resins (90–330 kcal/mol), and the smallest binding energy with the asphaltenes (100–140 kcal/mol), which causes CWTB to absorb the light components of the asphalt (aromatics and saturates). In addition, the introduction of CWTB reduces the diffusion coefficient of asphalt. In this process, CWTB will gradually swell, which causes CWTB to bind more and more tightly with the base asphalt, and eventually the good high temperature performance of CWTB is transferred to the base asphalt. The macroscopic manifestation of this process is that the rutting factor of CWTB-modified asphalt is significantly higher than that of virgin asphalt. This study can provide basic theoretical support for the application of CWTB-modified asphalt.
