The main purpose of this contribution is twofold: from a scientific point of view, to interpret the symbiotic logic through the framework of the Viable Systems approach (vSa), and from a managerial viewpoint, to provide the actors of industrial symbiosis initiatives, at any stage of their life cycle, with a guide to the most promising web-based solutions in terms of defining the best configuration for the symbiotic network. The article, therefore, aims to provide an in-depth study of the existing literature, which is still not exhaustive, and to consider synoptically and comparatively the modern platforms capable of supporting industrial symbiosis initiatives. The objective was pursued by examining 10 existing and functioning Web-based platforms, of which only a few were previously explored in the previous literature, while the recognition of the latter was carried out on a bibliometric basis to articulate in more detail the existing gap based on a panel of contributions as large as possible. The joint consideration of the literature review and the examination of the existing and functioning platforms shows an articulated framework of approaches, proposed models, and classification schemes of their functions, which allows us to conclude that given the sectoral, territorial, and specific characteristics of the materials addressed by each platform and considering the different cycles existing in eco-industrial parks (water, energy, by-products, etc.), the most promising way for their implementation is to consider multiple platforms to fully exploit the contribution of each of them. As for the management implications, the suggestion is to integrate the results obtained from the different platforms and to evaluate the configurational alternatives with multi-criteria procedures.

The severity of the two deeply correlated crises, the environmental and the economic ones, needs to be faced also in theoretical terms; thus, the authors propose a model yielding a global “stationary state”, following the idea of a “steady-state economics” by Georgescu-Rogen and Herman Daly, by constructing only one dynamical system of ecological and economic coupled variables. This is possible resorting to the generalized Volterra model, that, translated in the Hamiltonian formalism and its Hamilton equations, makes possible to “conjugate” every pair of variables, one economic, the other one ecological, in describing the behavior in time of a unique dynamical system. Applying the model to two of the most relevant ecological-economic pairs of variables leads to a suggestive geometry in the “phase space” of the model: the trajectories are curves wrapping a “donut”, their set is the “stationary state” we were looking for. Those trajectories are “quasi-periodic motions”, characterized by two frequencies, for whose values a good estimate is provided in the “small oscillations” approximation. A more general, but more abstract, “stationary state” is defined by virtue of the stability of the solutions of the Hamilton equations, just in this article recognized. The global character of the model is assured when world data of variables are used. A very interesting feature of the model is that the path to a scenario of sustainability is given in terms analogous to the Newtonian Dynamics.

The purpose of this paper was to discuss the need of “general reference frameworks that can support the understanding of complex phenomena related to sustainability and sustainable development that cannot be effectively faced by adopting existing disciplines in isolation”. Recognizing the complexity of sustainability, we discuss two main problems: (1) the yet unfulfilled need to overcome the fragmentation of knowledge necessary to address sustainability, and (2) the crucial need to strengthen the science–policy–industry interface in order to effectively co-create knowledge and solutions for sustainability. Advancing a ‘triple helix’ model for sustainability that has been recently developed in the field of managerial studies, the conditions for knowledge co-creation and effective science–policy–industry collaboration are discussed. Findings highlight: (1) the contribution of systems thinking to bridge the ways each discipline interprets sustainability and the ways actors look at its challenging requirements; (2) the relevance of ‘interface’ roles among actors involved in the theoretical and practical progress toward sustainability. Following the ‘helix’ stream, a novel representation of the sustainability triple helix shows how systems thinking, as a boundary-crossing and knowledge-bridging perspective, can trigger a virtuous interaction among key actors involved in the challenge for sustainability.

This work is about how healthcare issues can be reframed from a sustainable and inclusive development perspective. Focusing on the case of orphan drugs and rare diseases, first, a country-based review of the main regulatory approaches to orphan drugs is conducted; then, the main contributions of the literature are reviewed to identify dominant views and the way the problem is more commonly framed. The main findings reveal that the dominant regulatory approaches and theoretical interpretations of the problem are mainly based on economic considerations. However, this does not seem to have led to very satisfactory results. Reflecting upon what the sustainability perspective can highlight with reference to healthcare, substantial connections between the orphan drugs issue and that of neglected diseases are highlighted. These connections suggest reframing the orphan drugs issue as a social equality and inclusiveness problem, hence the need to adopt a sustainable and inclusive development perspective. As a key sustainable development goal (SGD) to be shared by all nations, healthcare should always be approached by putting the principles of sustainable and inclusive development at the core of policy makers’ regulatory choices. Accordingly, we think that the orphan drugs issue, like that of neglected diseases, could be better faced by adopting a social equality and inclusiveness perspective.

This work is based on a view of healthcare as a fundamental Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to share globally to be effective at local level. On this basis, the paper analyzes the health programs in less-favored areas with the aim of understanding why the United Nations SDGs are so difficult to reach in some countries. A brief review of the main literature and research on the health governance systems in three countries of the African continent have been conducted to this aim. The results are interpreted through the sustainability helix model (SHM). Key roles and conditions of effectiveness of the health sustainable development governance approach in the investigated countries are discussed. The main findings reveal that the analyzed governance systems lack implementation plans. By discussing the observed problem in the light of the sustainability helix model, fundamental elements of a health sustainable development helix model have been identified in less favored countries where key actors and roles are identified. The study highlights, in particular, the relevance of ‘interface’ roles played by non-governmental actors (NGA) and international actors (IA) in the health governance system of less-favored countries. These actors and roles allow connections between the global and the local levels of action favoring interaction among actors institutionally devoted to governing development.

Fused deposition modeling by 3D-printing is a rapid technique for the production of personalized drug dosage forms. One of the most delicate step of the whole process is the drug loading onto the thermoplastic polymer to obtain the drug-loaded filament used as feedstock for 3D FDM printers. With the aim of improving the drug loading, a systematic study on the influence of polymer size distribution on the quantity of drug able to adhere onto the polymer surface was conducted. Several solid mixtures were prepared, using five PVA batches (4000–5000 µm, 1000–2000 µm, 600–1000 µm, 250–600 µm, <250 µm) and Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride as active compound in different ratios. Operative specifics and printer’s parameters were tuned for an optimal print of drug-loaded filaments into the desired dosage forms, i.e. cylindrical printlets, fully characterized in terms of homogeneity, process efficiency, physical properties, drug content and release kinetics. The PVA particle size affected the polymer ability to form homogeneous mixture with the drug and the efficiency of the extrusion process. In particular, finest PVA batches showed better processability and reduced the drug loss during the drug/polymer mixing and the extrusion process. Drug-loaded filaments with different drug concentrations were successfully printed and the obtained printlets dissolution profiles were almost superimposable, taking an important step for the future application of 3D-printing manufacturing process to obtain personalized galenic formulations.

The paper aims to advocate the incorporating of the sustainability perspective into the management control system of healthcare organizations. The study is based on two main premises: (1) the evolution of business models towards a wide perspective of the sustainability approach; (2) the evolution of control systems in healthcare organizations towards a control-based approach to monitor the effectiveness and efficiency of the service targeted primarily to cut costs and expenses. Our methodology is developed at theoretical and conceptual level starting from: (1) a literature review on the issue, highlighting main trends and gaps and (2) the adoption of the Viable Systems Approach (VSA) as a conceptual framework oriented to integrate a wide variety of stakeholder perspectives and interests into the business model. Our findings lead us to introduce the Systems Viability Monitoring Model for Sustainability as a potential reference framework to build healthcare management control systems in which the notion of ‘systems viability,’ as defined by VSA, becomes a bridging concept by means of which the sustainability perspective can be incorporated into the management control system of healthcare organizations.

Healthcare represents a key issue for management in every country. A fundamental problem affects almost every healthcare system: the trade-off between the need to deliver effective healthcare services and the need to control expenses and to ensure the overall sustainability of the system. This problem is a clear expression of management complexity in healthcare systems. With the purpose of searching opportunities for reconciling efficiency and effectiveness in healthcare management, this work aims to explore possibilities offered by technology by investigating the criticalities and potentialities of the use of 3D printing in producing personalized medications. By adopting an organizational and managerial perspective, our exploratory study focuses on the context in which basic needs and opportunities of personalization in dosage forms mainly emerge: the stage of drug prescription and delivery processes that involve doctors, patients, and pharmacists. Obstacles, risks, and advantages of personalized medicine (PM) are discussed highlighting opportunities offered by the introduction of 3D printing technologies and conditions of success in terms of both effectiveness and cost of healthcare. Key findings lead to a possible model of synthesis in which the potential revolutionary role of drug 3D printing in pharmaceutical compounding and/or manufacturing is highlighted. A 3D printing empowered compounding pharmacy is an innovation we envision to progress toward smarter and more sustainable healthcare.

This paper proposes a managerial and policy view of land use based on the systems perspective. The focus is on protected areas as a significant example of a management approach to land use that suffers from a dominant reductionist view objectively focused on conservation and protection activities. Conversely, the need for a more holistic and open view has emerged over time, requiring a paradigm change in the approach to natural resource management. Starting from identifying the key values of protected areas to leverage in a wider enhancement policy, our findings suggest that, through the adoption of a systems view and an integrated management approach, the cultural value of protected areas as models for promoting sustainable development in the surrounding territory can provide leverage in an effective valorisation policy. The key elements of a systems-based management approach are highlighted through the analysis of Alta Murgia National Park in Italy, an example case in which the naturalistic value of the site is enhanced through its cultural dimensions.

In recognition of the urgent need to drive the transition to truly sustainable development, it is our belief that the divisions still distinguishing economic, social and environmental dimensions of human activities can impede the creation of conditions for sustainable development. Our paper investigates reference models for integrating such economic, social and environmental perspectives of sustainable development, proposing a systems approach. We take into consideration protected areas as models of sustainable development by means of a case study, discussing (1) the need to integrate the economic, social and environmental dimensions of human activity; and (2) opportunities offered by protected areas as reference models for promoting sustainable development in the wider surrounding territory. Findings highlight the cultural value of protected areas as models of sustainable development leveraging territorial governance on the basis of a systems approach.

In the last decades much attention has been dedicated to the interpretation of relevant phenomena in the socio-economic field, highlighting the need of general frameworks of reference for the governance of sustainability and often recurring to the Elkington’s triple bottom line and the Etzkowitz’s triple-helix representations as reference models. In front of a massive scientific production that points out criteria and method of the model, the theory could seem less rich of applications and examples, especially in the field of the inquiry defined by sustainability. In this work, our aim is to provide a little contribution to cover this gap by (1) drawing a more general view from the triple bottom line; (2) highlighting a ‘triple-helix’ functioning in the triple bottom line as represented in the triple helix of sustainability; (3) providing an example, very actual and important, and some general reasoning related to the use of the model as a possible reference in the basic understanding of the complexity of governance for sustainability.

Purpose Poverty, hunger, inequalities, diseases, unsustainable use of resources, etc., in spite of scientific progress, still remains unsolved worldwide issues. All these issues relate to the challenges of sustainability and sustainable development that now call for urgent answers. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the service research community can respond to this call and to identify key areas of potential contribution. Design/methodology/approach After a brief review of selected service literature aimed at exploring its interest in the topics of sustainability and sustainable development, the authors develop the interpretative proposal identifying the key requirements of a global engagement in the challenge of sustainability and sustainable development and highlighting the potential contribution of service research. Findings Findings highlight the potential contribution of service research to the global challenge of sustainability and suggest acting upon education by considering the “T-Shaped” professional model as a possible reference for embedding sustainability in the education of future managers and addressing the need of interdisciplinary thinking through the systems approach. Research limitations/implications The proposed study of service literature is only an exploratory analysis of main contributions that does not aim to identify gaps but only to highlight the potential of a greater engagement of service research in the global call for a more sustainable and inclusive development. Practical implications A trans-disciplinary approach is also required. This implies the involvement of the business and the social real world. Originality/value This paper represents a novel call for engaging the service research community in a boundary-crossing collaboration with the aim of contributing to address the challenge of sustainability.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate women’s financial inclusion as a critical element for the competitiveness of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market for entrepreneurship and sustainable development of the region, as MENA financial institutions’ loans to women-owned SMEs tend to be significantly lower than the share of women-owned SMEs in their target markets. Causes of under-serving this market are not very well studied. Design/methodology/approach The paper builds on an inductive approach supported by the interpretative contribution offered by the viable systems approach as methodological and interpretative lens to investigate the topic of women financial inclusion in MENA regions. Reflections herein are supported by an exploratory study on the conditions for women financial inclusion in MENA regions. Findings The main focus of this paper is to study the financial gap that women entrepreneurs are experiencing in enlarging their businesses and/or lunching innovative projects. In accordance with this, the paper highlights the need of a more systemic approach and long-term vision to support a more extensive women financial inclusion in MENA regions. Originality/value Financial institutions’ need to understand women-owned SMEs’ financial needs for innovation and growth to build new customized financial products. This paper’s argument is that the dominant short-term approach to credit-granting for women, although providing support, may be inadequate to achieve a real financial inclusion, and possible causes and solutions are discussed.

Innovation implies collaboration among business actors and is fundamental in value cocreation networks. A significant context is the healthcare, where Translational Medicine (T-MED) aims at decreasing barriers between clinical research and medical treatments. The Translational Medicine is the integration and optimization of inputs in basic research improving the patient care, advancing and speeding up the process of offering new protocols, therapies, and practices. This conceptual contribution analyzes the Service Innovation in Translational Medicine using the paradigms of the Service Science (SS), Complex Service Systems, and Viable Systems Approach (VSA). It aims to increase the comprehension of relationships and complexity reduction processes in Translational Medicine and in Service Innovation in healthcare and improving of understanding the constraints to the innovation supporting Translational Medicine approach, seeking strategic solutions with a holistic view of healthcare networks.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to create awareness on the need for lifting up the level of analysis in service research by focusing on systems, networks, and ecosystems to contribute to the research expansion of the traditionally narrow view of service. Design/methodology/approach – This conceptual paper is built upon three blocks. First, the viable systems approach is revised to highlight the survival, viability, and complexity of service systems. Second, the dynamics of service networks is discussed using an ecological view of service with a nested, networked configuration. Third, these two previous perspectives are integrated using the fundamentals of ecosystems thinking. Findings – This paper outlines a novel, tri-level approach reorienting and reframing our thinking around systems, networks, and ecosystems. Some research challenges and directions that could expand the body of knowledge in service research are also discussed. Research limitations/implications – The tri-level approach proposed in this conceptual paper could be enriched with other theoretical perspectives and empirical explorations. Practical implications – Lifting the level of analysis by focussing on service systems, service networks, and service ecosystems would allow practitioners to expand their business perspective to better face the challenges of complex business settings, enabling them to co-create value for all their stakeholders. Originality/value – The paper contributes to set the foundation for the next stage of service research by going beyond dyadic interactions to address dynamic systems, networks, and ecosystems across different interaction patterns in complex business configurations.

The aim of this chapter is to highlight the necessity of a change in perspective and a new approach to Retail Service Marketing by addressing the recent challenges posed by a radical rethinking of market exchange logic using a service view. Recent Service Marketing advances are analyzed, which lead to the Service Dominant Logic proposal to take a general service view of market exchange, envisaging an emerging paradigm change. However, the key to this potential paradigm change is not yet well focused. A gap in the theoretical approach emerges that can be closed by adopting the Viable Systems Approach and the structure-system interpretation scheme. Their implications for retailing are discussed, and the key to change is emphasized. This chapter introduces a new theoretical and conceptual framework rooted in systems thinking, which recommends a Service Systems Approach to Retail Marketing.

Cultural Heritage-Management (CHM) in Italy appears to chronically suffer from resources fragmentation. The aim of this chapter is to highlight the need for a value co-creation logic based on resource integration in CHM to improve awareness and involve citizens, organizations and other stakeholders in the cultural heritage preservation and enhancement activities. The methodological approach adopted is an integration among Service-Dominant-logic (S-DL) and Service-Science (SS), within the general framework of the Viable-Systems-Approach (VSA). By shifting focus from the objects of exchange to the relations among parties, S-DL and SS emphasize the importance of collaboration in market interaction. VSA integrates the two perspectives within the structure-system paradigm explaining how collaboration among viable systems takes place. On the basis of the proposed integrated perspective a Service-Based-Systems approach is defined that allows developing a model for CHM based on a value co-creation logic. The authors argue that, to implement an effective co-creation, actors should be linked as resource integrators within a network relationship and share a governance approach inspired cooperating principles as postulated by the VSA consonance model. The chapter provides a conceptual framework of reference for integrating the wide variety of resources needed for an effective management approach to cultural heritage preservation and enhancement. This approach requires a cultural change in CHM organizations in order to effectively exploit: opportunities of a co-creation logic oriented to integrate multi-disciplinary; multi-professional resources; capabilities and competences. By adopting the VSA consonance framework, the authors highlight the relational conditions for resource integration in a Cultural Heritage Territorial System model on the basis of a value co-creation logic.
