Solar distillation techniques are of high significance to provide human needs of freshwater. Even though these techniques are simple and economic, their output distillate production is low. One of the modern significant modifications performed to enlarge the rate of evaporation inside the solar stills is using the wick materials with various types and different arrangements, hence the freshwater yield could be improved. To obtain the significance of the wicks, in some cases, the productivity of a solar still was enlarged by 180% with providing a wick material as will be discussed later in this review. As a result, in this manuscript, a generalized survey of the effects of using different wicks on the performance of not only the conventional still but also of all types of solar stills is presented. Besides, satisfying conclusions are summarized to help the researchers intending to work on the wick type solar still.

A practical study was conducted to improve the performance of conventional pyramidal solar stills (CPSS) using two types of fins with differing geometries, as well as nanocomposites of TiO2 and graphene. The first fin was hollow, cylindrical, and perforated (HCPF), whereas the second fin was an inclined perforated rectangular fin (IPRF). The fins were integrated with the base of a solar still to evaluate their performance in comparison with a CPSS. The obtained experimental results demonstrated that the pyramidal solar still with hollow perforated cylindrical fins (PSS-HCPF) and the pyramidal solar still with inclined perforated rectangular fins (PSS-IPRF) produced more distillate than the PSS-HCPF and CPSS under all examined conditions. The daily productivities of the CPSS, PSS-HCPF, and PSS-IPRF were 3718, 4840, and 5750 mL/m2, respectively, with the PSS-HCPF and PSS-IPRF improving the productivity by 31.3% and 55.9%, respectively, compared to that of the CPSS. In addition, using nanocomposites with PSS-IPRF improved the daily distillate production by 82.1%.

As is widely known, the issue of freshwater scarcity affects practically all people, and all are looking for innovative and workable ways to attempt to solve this issue. In this work, a novel method of desalination is proposed. The proposed system consists of a solar collector (PTSC), evacuated pipe (EP), condenser (CU), and separation unit (SU). The working principle of the system is heating the feed saline water using the PTSC and EP and controlling the water flow rate to control the output conditions of the EP. The produced vapor is therefore separated from salty water using the SU. In addition, the generated steam is condensed into the CU to produce a freshwater distillate. Consequently, the effect of solar radiation on the affecting temperatures was tested. In addition, the effect of using different water flow rates (6, 7.5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 L/h) inside the EP on the system productivity was investigated. The primary findings of this work may be highlighted in relation to the experiments conducted. At midday, when ultraviolet irradiance reached its highest, the EP’s water flow entrance and outflow had the largest temperature differential. In addition, the lower the water flow rate inside the EP, the higher the water temperature, the higher the evaporation rate of the system, and the greater the freshwater productivity of the system. At 6 L/h, the water’s highest temperature was 92 °C. Moreover, the best performance of the system was obtained at 7.5 L/h, where the freshwater production and average daily effectiveness of the distillate process were 44.7 L/daytime and 59.6%, respectively. As well, the productivity of EP was augmented by around 11.86% when using graphite nanoparticles. Additionally, the distilled freshwater from the system operating at the flow rate of 7.5 L/h costs 0.0085 $/L.

Solar distillation emerges as a viable remedy for addressing water scarcity in both remote and urban locales. However, its operational efficiency remains a limiting factor. Consequently, this study undertakes a comprehensive approach by introducing design modifications to enhance a distiller’s overall productivity. The pivotal adjustment involves configuring the distiller into a three-tiered structure, thus designating it as a multi-stage solar still (MSSS). Notably, the solar stills are crafted entirely from glass to optimize consistent solar tracking, eschewing the conventional sun-tracking rotation mechanism. Furthermore, the three-stage distiller undergoes refinement through the incorporation of a thermo-storing material (PCM) comprising paraffin infused with graphene nanocomposites at the base of the solar still (SS). Subsequent to these design enhancements, a comprehensive evaluation encompassing exergy, economic viability, environmental impact, and thermal considerations is conducted for both the conventional solar still (CSS) and MSSS. The outcomes elucidate that the upper stage of the MSSS outperforms its counterparts, producing superior results. Comparative analysis indicates a remarkable 160% enhancement in productivity for the MSSS over the CSS. Cumulative water productivities for the CSS and MSSS with PCM are recorded at 2840 and 7980 mL/m2 during the daytime, reflecting an improvement of 181%. The energy efficiency metrics reveal values of 31%, 49.8%, and 53% for the CSS, MSSS, and MSSS with PCM, respectively. Moreover, the MSSS with PCM demonstrates an exergy efficiency of 5.8%. The environmental implications are quantified at 12 tons of CO2 emissions per year for the MSSS with PCM. Finally, the cost considerations illustrate a reduction in the cost of freshwater for the MSSS with PCM (0.10 $/L) and the MSSS (0.13 $/L), as compared to the conventional SS (0.24 $/L).
