It is of great significance to develop early prediction technology for controlling downy mildew and promoting cucumber production. In this study, a cucumber downy mildew prediction method was proposed by fusing quantitative disease information and environmental data. Firstly, the number of cucumber downy mildew spores during the experiment was collected by a portable spore catcher, and the proportion of cucumber downy mildew leaf area to all cucumber leaf area was recorded, which was used as the incidence degree of cucumber plants. The environmental data in the greenhouse were monitored and recorded by the weather station in the greenhouse. Environmental data outside the greenhouse were monitored and recorded by a weather station in front of the greenhouse. Then, the influencing factors of cucumber downy mildew were analyzed based on the Pearson correlation coefficient method. The influencing factors of the cucumber downy mildew early warning model in greenhouse were identified. Finally, the CNN-LSTM (Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory) algorithm was used to establish the cucumber downy mildew incidence prediction model. The results showed that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Square Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and determination coefficient (R2) of the CNN-LSTM network model were 0.069, 0.0098, 0.0991, and 0.9127, respectively. The maximum error between the predicted value and the true value for all test sets was 16.9398%. The minimum error between the predicted value and the true value for all test sets was 0.3413%. The average error between the predicted and true values for all test sets was 6.6478%. The Bland–Altman method was used to analyze the predicted and true values of the test set, and 95.65% of the test set data numbers were within the 95% consistency interval. This work can serve as a foundation for the creation of early prediction models of greenhouse crop airborne diseases.

To address the problems of traditional methods that rely on destructive sampling, the poor adaptability of fixed equipment, and the susceptibility of single-view angle measurements to occlusions, a non-destructive and portable device for three-dimensional phenotyping and biomass detection in lettuce was developed. Based on the Structure-from-Motion Multi-View Stereo (SFM-MVS) algorithms, a high-precision three-dimensional point cloud model was reconstructed from multi-view RGB image sequences, and 12 phenotypic parameters, such as plant height, crown width, were accurately extracted. Through regression analyses of plant height, crown width, and crown height, and the R2 values were 0.98, 0.99, and 0.99, respectively, the RMSE values were 2.26 mm, 1.74 mm, and 1.69 mm, respectively. On this basis, four biomass prediction models were developed using Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), and Random Forest Regression (RFR). The results indicated that the RFR model based on the projected convex hull area, point cloud convex hull surface area, and projected convex hull perimeter performed the best, with an R2 of 0.90, an RMSE of 2.63 g, and an RMSEn of 9.53%, indicating that the RFR was able to accurately simulate lettuce biomass. This research achieves three-dimensional reconstruction and accurate biomass prediction of facility lettuce, and provides a portable and lightweight solution for facility crop growth detection.

In situ detection of growth information in greenhouse crops is crucial for germplasm resource optimization and intelligent greenhouse management. To address the limitations of poor flexibility and low automation in traditional phenotyping platforms, this study developed a controlled environment inspection robot. By means of a SCARA robotic arm equipped with an information acquisition device consisting of an RGB camera, a depth camera, and an infrared thermal imager, high-throughput and in situ acquisition of lettuce phenotypic information can be achieved. Through semantic segmentation and point cloud reconstruction, 12 phenotypic parameters, such as lettuce plant height and crown width, were extracted from the acquired images as inputs for three machine learning models to predict fresh weight. By analyzing the training results, a Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) with an added feature dimension-increasing module (DE-BP) was proposed, achieving improved prediction accuracy. The R2 values for plant height, crown width, and fresh weight predictions were 0.85, 0.93, and 0.84, respectively, with RMSE values of 7 mm, 6 mm, and 8 g, respectively. This study achieved in situ, high-throughput acquisition of lettuce phenotypic information under controlled environmental conditions, providing a lightweight solution for crop phenotypic information analysis algorithms tailored for inspection tasks.

Considering the growing demand for modern facility agriculture, it is essential to develop non-destructive technologies for assessing lettuce nutritional status. To overcome the limitations of traditional methods, which are destructive and time-consuming, this study proposes a multimodal non-destructive nitrogen detection method for lettuce based on multi-source imaging. The approach integrates terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) to achieve rapid and non-invasive nitrogen detection. Spectral imaging data of lettuce samples under different nitrogen gradients (20–150%) were simultaneously acquired using a THz-TDS system (0.2–1.2 THz) and a NIR-HSI system (1000–1600 nm), with image segmentation applied to remove background interference. During data processing, Savitzky–Golay smoothing, MSC (for THz data), and SNV (for NIR data) were employed for combined preprocessing, and sample partitioning was performed using the SPXY algorithm. Subsequently, SCARS/iPLS/IRIV algorithms were applied for THz feature selection, while RF/SPA/ICO methods were used for NIR feature screening, followed by nitrogen content prediction modeling with LS-SVM and KELM. Furthermore, small-sample learning was utilized to fuse crop feature information from the two modalities, providing a more comprehensive and effective detection strategy. The results demonstrated that the THz-based model with SCARS-selected power spectrum features and an RBF-kernel LS-SVM achieved the best predictive performance (R2 = 0.96, RMSE = 0.20), while the NIR-based model with ICO features and an RBF-kernel LS-SVM achieved the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.967, RMSE = 0.193). The fusion model, combining SCARS and ICO features, exhibited the best overall performance, with training accuracy of 96.25% and prediction accuracy of 95.94%. This dual-spectral technique leverages the complementary responses of nitrogen in molecular vibrations (THz) and organic chemical bonds (NIR), significantly enhancing model performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to realize the synergistic application of THz and NIR spectroscopy in nitrogen detection of facility-grown lettuce, providing a high-precision, non-destructive solution for rapid crop nutrition diagnosis.

Accurate and reliable prediction of lettuce fresh weight is essential for optimising protected cultivation management and improving the yield and quality. Multimodal data combined with machine learning models have been widely used for monitoring crop growth. However, existing approaches often fail to capture dynamic physiological changes during crop growth, whereas conventional machine learning models are frequently limited by their black-box nature and thus cannot reveal the intrinsic relationships between features and targets. To address the above issues, this study developed a stationary, multi-sensor integrated data acquisition platform under controlled greenhouse conditions. By fusing multi-view morphological structure, color and texture, and multispectral features, the study constructed interpretable machine learning models for predicting the fresh weight of lettuce. Based on the data collected by the platform, 66 initial features covering morphology, color texture, and vegetation indices were extracted from the data. A two-stage feature-selection strategy combining Pearson correlation screening and variance inflation factor (VIF)-based multicollinearity elimination was used to select nine optimal input variables for the model. To achieve an accurate estimation of the fresh weight of lettuce, the system compared six models: Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest Regression (RFR), Gradient Boosted Decision Tree Regression (GBDT), K-nearest neighbour regression (KNN), XGBoost, and Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN). The results indicate that the SVR model based on multimodal data fusion performed best, with an R2 of 0.93, an RMSE of 3.23 g, an RMSEn of 5.60%, and an MAE of 2.31 g, demonstrating a significantly higher prediction accuracy than the other models. Furthermore, the SHAP interpretation method was used to reveal the contributions of key features to fresh weight estimation and their interaction mechanisms. This study provides a feasible approach and technical guidance for non-destructive estimation of fresh weight in lettuce under controlled conditions, and offers a preliminary basis for the development of phenotypic monitoring models for protected cultivation.
