Yunnan Province, China, known for its superior ecological environment and diverse climate conditions, is home to a rich resource of tea-plant varieties. However, the subtle differences in shape, color and size among the fresh leaves of different tea-plant varieties pose significant challenges for their identification and detection. This study proposes an improved YOLOv8 model based on a dataset of fresh leaves from five tea-plant varieties among Yunnan large-leaf tea trees. Dynamic Upsampling replaces the UpSample module in the original YOLOv8, reducing the data volume in the training process. The Efficient Pyramid Squeeze Attention Network is integrated into the backbone of the YOLOv8 network to boost the network’s capability to handle multi-scale spatial information. To improve model performance and reduce the number of redundant features within the network, a Spatial and Channel Reconstruction Convolution module is introduced. Lastly, Inner-SIoU is adopted to reduce network loss and accelerate the convergence of regression. Experimental results indicate that the improved YOLOv8 model achieves precision, recall and an mAP of 88.4%, 89.9% and 94.8%, representing improvements of 7.1%, 3.9% and 3.4% over the original model. This study’s proposed improved YOLOv8 model not only identifies fresh leaves from different tea-plant varieties but also achieves graded recognition, effectively addressing the issues of strong subjectivity in manual identification detection, the long training time of the traditional deep learning model and high hardware cost. It establishes a robust technical foundation for the intelligent and refined harvesting of tea in Yunnan’s tea gardens.

Grading tea leaves efficiently in a natural environment is a crucial technological foundation for the automation of tea-picking robots. In this study, to solve the problems of dense distribution, limited feature-extraction ability, and false detection in the field of tea grading recognition, an improved YOLOv8n model for tea grading and counting recognition was proposed. Firstly, the SPD-Conv module was embedded into the backbone of the network model to enhance the deep feature-extraction ability of the target. Secondly, the Super-Token Vision Transformer was integrated to reduce the model’s attention to redundant information, thus improving its perception ability for tea. Subsequently, the loss function was improved to MPDIoU, which accelerated the convergence speed and optimized the performance. Finally, a classification-positioning counting function was added to achieve the purpose of classification counting. The experimental results showed that, compared to the original model, the precision, recall and average precision improved by 17.6%, 19.3%, and 18.7%, respectively. The average precision of single bud, one bud with one leaf, and one bud with two leaves were 88.5%, 89.5% and 89.1%. In this study, the improved model demonstrated strong robustness and proved suitable for tea grading and edge-picking equipment, laying a solid foundation for the mechanization of the tea industry.

Understanding the correlation between soil chemical properties and tea quality is essential for the comprehensive management of ancient tea gardens. However, the specific links between these factors in ancient tea gardens remain underexplored. This study analyzes the soil chemical properties of four distinct research regions in Nanhua County to explore their effects on key chemical components in ancient tea garden teas, providing a scientific basis for improving the quality of ancient tea garden teas through soil management. Employing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the chemical components of tea and the chemical properties of the soil were meticulously quantified. Following these measurements, the integrated fertility index (IFI) and the potential ecological risk index (PERI) were evaluated and correlation analysis was conducted. The results revealed that ancient tea garden tea quality is closely linked to soil chemical properties. Soil’s total nitrogen (TN), total sulfur (TS), and available potassium (AK) negatively correlate with tea’s catechin gallate (CG) component and AK also with polyphenols. Most other soil properties show positive correlations with tea components. The research also evaluated soil heavy metals’ IFI and PERI. IFI varied significantly among regions. Hg’s high pollution index indicates ecological risks; Cd in Xiaochun (XC) region poses a moderate risk. PERI suggests moderate risk for XC and Banpo (BP), with other areas classified as low risk. Implementing reasonable fertilization and soil amelioration measures to enhance soil fertility and ensure adequate supply of key nutrients will improve the quality of ancient tea gardens. At the same time, soil management measures should effectively control heavy metal pollution to ensure the quality and safety of tea products. Insights from this study are crucial for optimizing soil management in ancient tea gardens, potentially improving tea quality and sustainability.

To achieve an efficient, non-destructive, and intelligent identification of tea plant seedlings under high-temperature stress, this study proposes an improved YOLOv11 model based on chlorophyll fluorescence imaging technology for intelligent identification. Using tea plant seedlings under varying degrees of high temperature as the research objects, raw fluorescence images were acquired through a chlorophyll fluorescence image acquisition device. The fluorescence parameters obtained by Spearman correlation analysis were found to be the maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), and the fluorescence image of this parameter is used to construct the dataset. The YOLOv11 model was improved in the following ways. First, to reduce the number of network parameters and maintain a low computational cost, the lightweight MobileNetV4 network was introduced into the YOLOv11 model as a new backbone network. Second, to achieve efficient feature upsampling, enhance the efficiency and accuracy of feature extraction, and reduce computational redundancy and memory access volume, the EUCB (Efficient Up Convolution Block), iRMB (Inverted Residual Mobile Block), and PConv (Partial Convolution) modules were introduced into the YOLOv11 model. The research results show that the improved YOLOv11-MEIP model has the best performance, with precision, recall, and mAP50 reaching 99.25%, 99.19%, and 99.46%, respectively. Compared with the YOLOv11 model, the improved YOLOv11-MEIP model achieved increases of 4.05%, 7.86%, and 3.42% in precision, recall, and mAP50, respectively. Additionally, the number of model parameters was reduced by 29.45%. This study provides a new intelligent method for the classification of high-temperature stress levels of tea seedlings, as well as state detection and identification, and provides new theoretical support and technical reference for the monitoring and prevention of tea plants and other crops in tea gardens under high temperatures.

Catechins are pivotal determinants of tea quality, with soil environmental factors playing a crucial role in the synthesis and accumulation of these compounds. To investigate the impact of changes in tea garden soil environments on the catechin content in sun-dried tea, this study measured the catechin content in soil samples and corresponding tea leaves from Nanhua, Yunnan, China. By integrating the variations in catechin content with those of 17 soil factors and employing COX regression factor analysis, it was found that pH, organic matter (OM), fluoride, arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr) were significantly correlated with catechin content (p < 0.05). Further, using the LASSO regression for variable selection, a model named LCLN-CA was constructed with four variables including pH, OM, fluoride, and As. The LCLN-CA model demonstrated high fitting accuracy with AUC values of 0.674, 0.784, and 0.749 for catechin content intervals of CA ≤ 10%, 10% < CA ≤ 20%, and 20% < CA ≤ 30% in the training set, respectively. The validation set showed AUC values of 0.630, 0.756, and 0.723, respectively, indicating a well-calibrated curve. Based on the LCLN-CA model and the DynNom framework, a visual prediction system for catechin content in Yunnan sun-dried tea was developed. External validation with a test dataset achieved an Accuracy of 0.870. This study explored the relationship between soil-related factors and variations in catechin content, paving a new way for the prediction of catechin content in tea and enhancing the practical application value of artificial intelligence technology in agricultural production.
