Reliable environmental audits and impact assessments are essential to achieve effective pasture utilization and ensure the production of high-quality livestock products. This study aims to develop an environmental audit and impact assessment method for pasture agrolandscapes to promote sustainable livestock practices, using Central Kazakhstan as a case study. To provide a strong foundation for this research, the study utilized representations of pasture agrolandscapes, landscape-ecological and landscape-indicative approaches, and interactions between environmental audits and impact assessments in Kazakhstan. The authors acknowledge that their understanding of the environmental audit and impact assessment for pasture agrolandscapes is a complex method that requires specific knowledge and information about the landscape environment from users. They note that solving the challenges of national food security and environmentally safe territorial development can be achieved through the development of a private method that uses landscape environment status indicators. Methods similar to this enable the study of geocomplexes and their crucial characteristics, leading to a unique system of reliable indicators for environmental issues. This approach facilitates the creation of a scientifically based plan for optimal regional land use and land management systems regarding pasture agrolandscapes.

This study analyzes spatiotemporal aridity dynamics in Central Kazakhstan (1960–2022) using a monthly Aridity Index (AI = P/PET), where P is precipitation and PET is potential evapotranspiration, Mann–Kendall trend analysis, and climate zone classification. Results reveal a northeast–southwest aridity gradient, with Aridity Index ranging from 0.11 to 0.14 in southern deserts to 0.43 in the Kazakh Uplands. Between 1960–1990 and 1991–2022, southern regions experienced intensified aridity, with Aridity Index declining from 0.12–0.15 to 0.10–0.14, while northern mountainous areas became more humid, where Aridity Index increased from 0.40–0.44 to 0.41–0.46. Seasonal analysis reveals divergent patterns, with winter showing improved moisture conditions (52.4% reduction in arid lands), contrasting sharply with aridification in spring and summer. Summer emerges as the most extreme season, with hyper-arid zones (8%) along with expanding arid territories (69%), while autumn shows intermediate conditions with notable dry sub-humid areas (5%) in northwestern regions. Statistical analysis confirms these observations, with northern areas showing positive Aridity Index trends (+0.007/10 years) against southwestern declines (−0.003/10 years). Key drivers include rising temperatures (with recent degradation) and variable precipitation (long-term drying followed by winter and spring), and PET fluctuations linked to temperature. Since 1991, arid zones have expanded from 40% to 47% of the region, with semi-arid lands transitioning to arid, with a northward shift of the boundary. These changes are strongly seasonal, highlighting the vulnerability of Central Kazakhstan to climate-driven aridification.

Agricultural practices in Kazakhstan exert considerable pressure on the landscape, leading to environmental degradation, pastureland fragmentation, and biodiversity loss. Sustainable land management is crucial for balancing economic development and ecological preservation. This study assesses land conditions in the Zhanaarka region of Ulytau Oblast, Kazakhstan, focusing on climatic and anthropogenic impacts. Using Landsat 5 and 8 satellite imagery (2009, 2013, 2018), we evaluated land cover changes through NDVI analysis, climate factor assessment (temperature and precipitation), and GIS-based mapping. Pearson’s correlation and multivariate analysis were applied to identify relationships between vegetation dynamics and climatic variables, alongside anthropogenic influences such as land development and irrigation. Significant shifts in vegetation cover and land boundaries were observed over the study period. Multivariate analysis revealed no single climatic variable (temperature or precipitation) as a limiting factor for Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) changes. However, anthropogenic activities, including unsustainable land use, were key drivers of pasture degradation. The findings highlight the dominant role of human activities in land degradation, despite the region’s climatic vulnerabilities. The study underscores the need for integrated land-use policies to mitigate degradation and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Recommendations are provided to enhance resilience against climate change and anthropogenic pressures.

Nitraria is a halophyte shrub, which grows in arid, semi-arid areas and particularly in saline deserts and salt marshes. The genus belongs to family Nitrariaceae and includes 10(12) species all over the world with unusual disjointed distribution. These shrubs are used in the protective afforestation for enhancing sand deposits and banks and reducing soil salinity and concentration of organic substances. The genus Nitraria L. is an old, Teritary Period’s relict plant which initially was described in Komarov’s investigations and given main hypothesis about its origin and distribution centers in Chinese and Mongolian floristic geography. The probability that Nitraria L. is a very antient genus, having its origins in Central Asia, is found as a theme of discussion of many researchers. The wide separateness between N. billardieri in Australia and the closely related N. schoberi in Eastern Europe and Asia has been difficult to explain. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies and methods have given new findings on systematics of the genus and new hypotheses on distribution pattern and time of origin. In this article, we discuss hypotheses about origin and distribution of Nitraria L.

Otrar district is an agrarian district located in the south part of the Kazakhstan, on natural-territorialcomplexes of which from ancient times been exposed anthropogenic factors. Based on the latest data, dueto the intensity of natural and anthropogenic factors, a significant transformation of natural and territorialcomplexes as a whole and of its individual components is observed in the object of research. And theexisting old cartographic data does not fully reflect the current state. In this regard, in order to analyze thephysical and geographical state and to identify trends and specifics of transformation of the geosystems ofthe Otrar district, physical and geographical studies were carried out on the basis of GIS technologies: Arcgis10.4 and Ilwis 3.4. The geographic database of the research area was created, after digitizing the rastertopographic maps. In the course of the study, the tendency of transformation of geosystems of the objectwas revealed and their comparative analysis was carried out by deciphering space images of the satelliteLandsat 8OLI. For this purpose, advanced methods and principles of foreign and domestic scientists on theapplication of GIS. As a result, for the first time at a scale of 1: 200,000, a physical geographical map of theOtrar district was compiled, which describes the main specific characteristics of the physical geographicalpeculiarity of the territory. Also, focusing on the latest publications, the degree, cause-effect relationshipsof occurrence and impact of anthropogenic factors on geosystems are analyzed. The results of the study can be applied by specialists of the district administration of agriculture andenvironmental institutions to solve the problems of planning and design in the agricultural structure.
