In this paper, the impact of future climate changes on long-term hydropower generation (LTHG) of cascade hydropower stations in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River is discussed. Global climate models (GCM) were used to estimate the impacts of future climate changes, the Xinanjiang model (XAJ) was applied to project the streamflow of the hydropower stations, and then gravitational search algorithm (GSA) was adopted to solve the LTHG problem. In case studies, the validation of the XAJ model shows that it perform well in the projection of streamflow in the Jinsha River. Moreover, the future hydropower generation is simulated based on five different GCMs under three climate change scenarios. Finally, the GSA algorithm is used to obtain a set of schemes under the influence of climate change. The results show that future climate changes are expected to have different impact on power generation of cascade reservoirs in the downstream of the Jinsha River when the climate change scenarios are different. These findings can provide decision support for future water resources management of the Jinsha River.

High-precision load forecasting is crucial for the power system planning and electricity market transactions. Recently, deep learning models have been widely used due to their powerful data mining capabilities. However, the existing research mainly focus on model structure adjustment and input feature selection, ignoring the influence of model ensemble on prediction. A single deep learning model is not yet able to address the various complex challenges that arise in short-term load forecasting. To improve the accuracy of short-term load forecasting, this paper proposes a novel multi-scale ensemble method and multi-scale ensemble neural network. This neural network uses long short-term memory, gate recurrent units, and temporal convolutional network as the basic model. By coupling the stochastic weight averaging ensemble method and differential evolution ensemble method, these deep learning networks were assembled from single-model scale and multi-model scale, respectively, thereby effectively improving the model prediction accuracy. For predicting the power load of Hubei Province in China, meteorological features and time features were in consideration. The proposed model was trained and compared with eleven intelligent short-term load forecasting models, including machine learning, deep learning and ensemble deep learning models. Simulations show that the proposed model has the best comprehensive prediction performance. This study highlights the power of ensemble deep learning models coupled with multiple ensemble techniques and the promising prospect of our proposed model in short-term load forecasting.

Runoff forecasting is of great importance for flood mitigation and power generation plan preparation. To explore the better application of time-frequency decomposition technology in runoff forecasting and improve the prediction accuracy, this research has developed a framework of runoff forecasting named Decomposition-Integration-Prediction (DIP) using parallel-input neural network, and proposed a novel runoff forecasting model with Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Stochastic Fractal Search (SFS) algorithm under this framework. In this model, the observed runoff series is first decomposed into several sub-series via the VMD method to extract different frequency information. Secondly, the parallel layers in the parallel-input neural network based on GRU are trained to receive the input samples of each subcomponent and integrate their output adaptively through the concatenation layers. Finally, the output of concatenation layers is treated as the final runoff forecasting result. In this process, the SFS algorithm was adopted to optimize the structure of the neural network. The prediction performance of the proposed model was evaluated using the historical monthly runoff data at Pingshan and Yichang hydrological stations in the Upper Yangtze River Basin of China, and seven various single and decomposition-based hybrid models were developed for comparison. The results show that the proposed model has obvious advantages in overall prediction performance, model training time, and multi-step-ahead prediction compared to several comparative methods, which is a reasonable and more efficient monthly runoff forecasting method based on time series decomposition and neural networks.

Hydropower compensating for wind and solar power is an efficient approach to overcoming challenges in the integration of sustainable energy. Our study proposes a multi-objective scheduling model for the complementary operation of wind–photovoltaic–hydro systems. The model aims to maximize the total generation while minimizing the mean square deviation of the system output and grid load. Taking wind and solar bases and key peak-shaving cascade hydropower stations in Hubei Province as a case study, various multi-objective Pareto solution sets were obtained for different scheduling periods. The analysis dissects the relationship between total generation and the stability of residual load after adjustment by the wind–photovoltaic–hydro systems. Furthermore, the study analyzes the role that a complementary system should play in the power grid and discusses the effect of cascade hydropower scheduling methods on the operational characteristics of multi-energy complementary systems.

In the electricity market environment, the market clearing price has strong volatility, periodicity and randomness, which makes it more difficult to select the input features of artificial neural network forecasting. Although the traditional back propagation (BP) neural network has been applied early in electricity price forecasting, it has the problem of low forecasting accuracy. For this reason, this paper uses the maximum information coefficient and Pearson correlation analysis to determine the main factors affecting electricity price fluctuation as the input factors of the forecasting model. The improved particle swarm optimization algorithm, called simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (SAPSO), is used to optimize the BP neural network to establish the SAPSO-BP short-term electricity price forecasting model and the actual sample data are used to simulate and calculate. The results show that the SAPSO-BP price forecasting model has a high degree of fit and the average relative error and mean square error of the forecasting model are lower than those of the BP network model and PSO-BP model, as well as better than the PSO-BP model in terms of convergence speed and accuracy, which provides an effective method for improving the accuracy of short-term electricity price forecasting.
