Airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) has become a powerful support for acquiring geospatial data in numerous geospatial applications and analyses. However, the process of extracting ground points accurately and effectively from raw point clouds remains a big challenge. This study presents an improved top-hat filter with a sloped brim to enhance the robustness of ground point extraction for complex objects and terrains. The top-hat transformation is executed and the elevation change intensity of the transitions between the obtained top-hats and outer brims is inspected to suppress the omission error caused by protruding terrain features. Finally, the nonground objects of complex structures, such as multilayer buildings, are identified by the brim filter that is extended outward. The performance of the proposed filter in various environments is evaluated using diverse datasets with difficult cases. The comparison of the proposed filter with the commercial software Terrasolid TerraScan and other popular filtering algorithms demonstrates the applicability and effectiveness of this filter. Experimental results show that the proposed filter has great promise in terms of its application in various types of landscapes. Abrupt terrain features with dramatic elevation changes are well preserved, and diverse objects with complicated shapes are effectively removed. This filter has minimal omission and commission error oscillation for different test areas and thus demonstrates a stable and reliable performance in diverse landscapes. In addition, the proposed algorithm has high computational efficiency because of its simple and efficient data structure and implementation.

In this study, we proposed climate use efficiency (CUE), a new index in monitoring grassland ecosystem function, to mitigate the disturbance of climate fluctuation. A comprehensive evaluation index (EI), combining with actual vegetation net primary productivity (NPP), CUE, vegetation coverage, and surface bareness, was constructed for the dynamic remote sensing monitoring of grassland degradation/restoration on a regional scale. By using this index, the grassland degradation/restoration in the Three-River Source Region (TRSR) was quantitatively evaluated during 2001–2016, which has been an important ecological barrier area in China. Results showed the following: During the study period, the grassland of Yellow River source (SRYe) had high vegetation coverage, NPP, CUE, and low bareness, whereas Yangtze River source (SRYa) had low vegetation coverage, NPP, CUE, and high bareness. The vegetation coverage and CUE of the grassland showed upward trends, with annual change rates of 0.75% and 0.45% year −1. The surface bareness and NPP showed downward trends, with annual change rates of −0.37% year−1 and −0.24 g C m−2 yr−2, respectively. Assessment of EI revealed that 67.18% of the grassland of TRSR showed a recovery trend during the study period. The overall restoration of the SRYe was the best, followed by SRYa. However, the status of Lancang River source (SRLa) was poor.

Land-use classification is fundamental for environmental and water resource evaluation in coastal plain areas. However, comprehensive remote sensing image-based land-use analysis is challenged by the lack of massive remote sensing images and the massive computing power of large-scale server systems. In this paper, the spatial-temporal land-use change characteristics of the Hangzhou Bay area coastal plain are investigated on the Google Earth Engine platform. The proposed model uses a random forest algorithm to assist the land-use classification. The dataset is selected from the year 2009 to 2020 and classified with an average classification accuracy of 89% and Kappa coefficient of 88%. The results show that the land use in the selected region is affected by urbanization, the balance of cultivated land occupation and compensation, construction of economic development zone, and other activities. The investigation also shows that in the past 12 years, land use has changed rapidly, and each land-use type maintains the dynamic balance of occupation and compensation. Although the overall land-use distribution is stable, the information entropy fluctuates at a high level, with an average value of 1.15, and the multi-year average value of equilibrium is as high as 0.83. The driving force of land-use change is analyzed and accounted as demographics and human population dynamics, social-economic development, urbanization, and coupling effects of the above-mentioned factors.

Data assimilation (DA) has been widely used in land surface models (LSM) to improve model state estimates. Among various DA methods, the particle filter (PF) with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) has become increasingly popular for estimating the states of the nonlinear and non-Gaussian LSMs. However, the standard PF always suffers from the particle impoverishment problem, characterized by loss of particle diversity. To solve this problem, an immune evolution particle filter with MCMC simulation inspired by the biological immune system, entitled IEPFM, is proposed for DA in this paper. The merit of this approach is in imitating the antibody diversity preservation mechanism to further improve particle diversity, thus increasing the accuracy of estimates. Furthermore, the immune memory function refers to promise particle evolution process towards optimal estimates. Effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by the numerical simulation experiment using a highly nonlinear atmospheric model. Finally, IEPFM is applied to a soil moisture (SM) assimilation experiment, which assimilates in situ observations into the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model to estimate SM in the MaQu network region of the Tibetan Plateau. Both synthetic and real case experiments demonstrate that IEPFM mitigates particle impoverishment and provides more accurate assimilation results compared with other popular DA algorithms.

Characterized by an alpine meadow, the ecological environment system in the ‘Three-River Headwaters’ region (TRHR) is considered to be a typical fragile ecological system. Numerous observations and research results have indicated that grassland degradation has occurred in the TRHR in recent years. However, research related to utilize the species information of grass communities to monitor grassland degradation remains rare. Therefore, the aim of this study is to produce the distribution maps of native plant species and noxious weeds to investigate grassland degradation for livestock farming perspective. In this study, the fused HJ-1A/HSI data was combined with field investigation samples to define the coverage of native plant species and noxious weeds at different coverage levels. Then, coverage distribution maps of native plant species and noxious weeds were produced by using support vector machine (SVM) classification and random forests (RF) regression methods. Meanwhile, the overall accuracy (OA) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of each coverage map were assessed. Finally, a grassland degradation map was derived according to the native plant species and noxious weeds cover information. The experimental results show that (1) the spectral feature of native plant species and noxious weeds can be distinguished based on field measurement spectra in the TRHR; (2) the fractional coverage of native plant species and noxious weeds can be relatively accurately estimated when coverage is divided into nine levels; (3) the grass coverage estimation accuracies of SVM classification are similar with these of RF regression method. The OAs of SVM classification are 69.7% at nine grassland coverage levels for native plant species and noxious weeds, and corresponding RMSEs are 8.2% and 8.0%, respectively; and (4) the coverage of native plant species is generally higher than that of the noxious weeds in the study area.
