Using the trapped rainbow effect to slow down or even stop light has been widely studied. However, high loss and energy leakage severely limited the development of rainbow devices. Here, we observed the negative Goos-Hänchen effect in film samples across the entire visible spectrum. We also discovered an amber rainbow ribbon and an optical black hole due to perfect back reflection in optical waveguides, where little light leaks out. Not only does the amber rainbow ribbon effect show an automatic frequency selection response, as predicted by single frequency theoretical models and confirmed by experiments, it also shows spatial periodic regulation, resulting from broadband omnidirectional visible metamaterials prepared by disordered assembly systems. This broadband light trapping system could play a crucial role in the fields of optical storage and information processing when being used to construct ultra-compact modulators and other tunable devices.

Optical metamaterials give birth to the control and regulation of light. However, because of strong energy dissipation and fabrication difficulty in meta‐atoms, low‐loss isotropic three dimensional negative index metamaterials (NIMs) in the visible spectrum has long been regarded as an extremely challenging. Here, we report an ultralow loss isotropic metamaterials for visible light and its inverse Doppler effect. The ball‐thorn‐shaped metaclusters with symmetrical structure consisting of the dielectric and its surface dispersed super‐thin silver layer was proposed, the surface plasma resonance is formed by discrete silver layer with a thickness of two or three atomic layers. We invented a unique technique for preparing ultralow loss isotropic clusters and three‐dimensional large block samples. The negative refractive index and the inverse Doppler effect of green and red light is measured by the prism method for the first time. The discrete super‐thin silver layer produced by the photoreduction method greatly reduces the generation of loss and break through noble metal high energy losses of traditional optical frequency metamaterial, the metaclusters unfold bottleneck of the nano‐assemble visible light metamaterials, opening a door for disorder assembling ultralow loss isotropic three‐dimensional large block NIMs devices of arbitrary shape.

Music is older than language, and for most of human history music holds our culture together. The pipe instrument is one of the most popular musical instruments of all time. Built on the foundation of previous flute and flute-like acoustic metamaterial models, we herein report the experimental results of the inverse Doppler effects discovered in two common pipe instruments - recorder and clarinet. Our study shows that the inverse Doppler effects can be detected at all seven pitches of an ascending musical scale when there is a relative motion between a microphone (observer) and abovementioned two pipe instruments (source). The calculated effective refractive indices of these two pipe instruments are negative and varying across a set of pitches, exhibiting a desired characteristic of broadband acoustic metamaterials. This study suggests that recorder and clarinet may be the earliest man-made acoustic metamaterials known so far, offering a new explanation why pipe instruments have enjoyed wide popularity in Europe and Asia over the past hundreds and thousands years. This newly discovered phenomenon would also offer a clue into designing next-generation smart broadband double-negative acoustic metamaterials with varying refractive index.

Absorbing materials in ultra-high frequency (UHF) band has constantly been a major challenge. The size of the absorber in UHF band is large, whereas the resonant frequency band is narrow. According to Rozanov's theory, two kinds of composite metamaterial absorbers are designed to realize the requirements of low-frequency broadband metamaterial microwave absorber: the magnetic-metamaterial composite absorber1 (MA1) and the dielectric-metamaterial composite absorber 2 (MA2). In the range of approximately 300-1000MHz, both absorbers achieve absorption of over 90% and feature good adaptability to the incident angle of the incident wave. The absorbers also present good absorption rate of over 80% in the range of 0-45 degree. Processing samples of indium tin oxide (ITO) resistance film and polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam board feature simple preparation and low cost, and the most important thing is to consider the weight problem, which features certain advantages in terms of use.
