We design a reflective silver dendritic metasurface that can perform differential operation at visible wavelengths. The metasurface consists of an upper layer of silver dendritic structures, a silica spacer, and a lower layer of silver film. Simulation results show that the metasurface can realize differential operation in red, yellow, and green bands. Such a functionality is readily extended to infrared and communication wavelengths. The metasurface samples that respond to green and red bands are prepared by using the electrochemical deposition method, and their differential operation properties are proved through tests. Silver dendritic metasurfaces that can conduct the mathematical operation in visible light pave the way for realizing miniaturized, integratable all-optical information processing systems. Their differentiation functionality, which is used for real-time ultra-fast edge detection, image contrast enhancement, hidden object detection, and other practical applications, has a great development potential.

Objectives: This study aims to compare the diagnostic efficacy of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) to traditional diagnostic methods in patients with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), elucidate the etiological spectrum of these infections, and explore the impact of mNGS on guiding antimicrobial therapy. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 128 patients admitted to the Respiratory Department of Anqing 116 Hospital between July 2022 and July 2023. All patients had undergone both mNGS and conventional microbiological techniques (CMT) for LRTI diagnosis. We assessed the diagnostic performance of these methods and examined the influence of mNGS on antimicrobial decision-making. Results: Overall, mNGS demonstrated superior sensitivity (96.8%) and accuracy (96.8%) compared to CMT. For Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection, the accuracy and sensitivity of mNGS was 88.8% and 77.6%, which was lower than the 94.7% sensitivity of the T-spot test and the 79.6% sensitivity of CMT. In fungal pathogen detection, mNGS showed excellent sensitivity (90.5%), specificity (86.7%), and accuracy (88.0%). Bacteria were the predominant pathogens detected (75.34%), with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (41.74%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (21.74%), and Haemophilus influenzae (16.52%) being most prevalent. Bacterial infections were most common (62.10%), followed by fungal and mixed infections (17.74%). Of the 118 patients whose treatment regimens were adjusted based on mNGS results, 102 (86.5%) improved, 7 (5.9%) did not respond favorably, and follow-up was lost for 9 patients (7.6%). Conclusions: mNGS offers rapid and precise pathogen detection for patients with suspected LRTIs and shows considerable promise in diagnosing Mycobacterium tuberculosis and fungal infections. By broadening the pathogen spectrum and identifying polymicrobial infections, mNGS can significantly inform and refine antibiotic therapy.

Slowing down or even stopping light is the first task to realising optical information transmission and storage. Theoretical studies have revealed that metamaterials can slow down or even stop light; however, the difficulty of preparing metamaterials that operate in visible light hinders progress in the research of slowing or stopping light. Metasurfaces provide a new opportunity to make progress in such research. In this paper, we propose a dendritic cell cluster metasurface consisting of dendritic structures. The simulation results show that dendritic structure can realise abnormal reflection and refraction effects. Single- and double-layer dendritic metasurfaces that respond in visible light were prepared by electrochemical deposition. Abnormal Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts were experimentally obtained. The rainbow trapping effect was observed in a waveguide constructed using the dendritic metasurface sample. The incident white light was separated into seven colours ranging from blue to red light. The measured transmission energy in the waveguide showed that the energy escaping from the waveguide was zero at the resonant frequency of the sample under a certain amount of incident light. The proposed metasurface has a simple preparation process, functions in visible light, and can be readily extended to the infrared band and communication wavelengths.

Cross-polarization conversion plays an important role in visible light manipulation. Metasurface with asymmetric structure can be used to achieve polarization conversion of linearly polarized light. Based on this, we design a quasi-periodic dendritic metasurface model composed of asymmetric dendritic cells. The simulation indicates that the asymmetric dendritic structure can vertically rotate the polarization direction of the linear polarization wave in visible light. Silver dendritic cell-cluster metasurface samples were prepared by the bottom-up electrochemical deposition. It experimentally proved that they could realize the cross - polarization conversion in visible light. Cross-polarized propagating light is deflected into anomalous refraction channels. Dendritic cell-cluster metasurface with asymmetric quasi-periodic structure conveys significance in cross-polarization conversion research and features extensive practical application prospect and development potential.

Optical metamaterials give birth to the control and regulation of light. However, because of strong energy dissipation and fabrication difficulty in meta‐atoms, low‐loss isotropic three dimensional negative index metamaterials (NIMs) in the visible spectrum has long been regarded as an extremely challenging. Here, we report an ultralow loss isotropic metamaterials for visible light and its inverse Doppler effect. The ball‐thorn‐shaped metaclusters with symmetrical structure consisting of the dielectric and its surface dispersed super‐thin silver layer was proposed, the surface plasma resonance is formed by discrete silver layer with a thickness of two or three atomic layers. We invented a unique technique for preparing ultralow loss isotropic clusters and three‐dimensional large block samples. The negative refractive index and the inverse Doppler effect of green and red light is measured by the prism method for the first time. The discrete super‐thin silver layer produced by the photoreduction method greatly reduces the generation of loss and break through noble metal high energy losses of traditional optical frequency metamaterial, the metaclusters unfold bottleneck of the nano‐assemble visible light metamaterials, opening a door for disorder assembling ultralow loss isotropic three‐dimensional large block NIMs devices of arbitrary shape.
