Binary content-addressable memory (BiCAM) is a popular high speed search engine in hardware, which provides output typically in one clock cycle. But speed of CAM comes at the cost of various disadvantages such as high latency, low storage density, and low architectural scalability. In addition, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which are used in many applications because of its advantages, do not have hard IPs for CAM. Since FPGAs have embedded IPs for random-access memories (RAMs), several RAM-based CAM architectures on FPGAs are available in the literature. However, these architectures are especially targeted for Ternary CAMs, not for BiCAMs; thus, the available RAM-based CAMs may not be fully beneficial for BiCAMs in terms of architectural design. Since modern FPGAs are enriched with logical resources, why not to configure them to design BiCAM on FPGA? The paper presents a logic-based high performance BiCAM architecture (LH-CAM) using Xilinx FPGA. The proposed CAM is composed of CAM words and associated comparators. A sample of LH-CAM of size 64×36 is implemented on Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA. Compared with the latest prior work, the proposed CAM is much simpler in architecture, storage efficient, reduces power consumption by 40.92%, and improves speed by 27.34%.

Ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) designed using static random-access memory (SRAM)-based field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) offers a promising lookup performance. However, the update process in a TCAM table poses significant challenges for efficiently employing SRAM-based TCAM. SRAM-based TCAM for FPGAs is designed using block RAM or distributed RAM resources in FPGAs. Such designs suspend search operations during an already high-latency update operation, rendering them infeasible in applications that require high-frequency updates. This paper presents a dynamically updateable energy- and resource-efficient TCAM design (DURE) based on FPGAs. DURE exploits the distributed RAM resources in FPGAs. More specifically, the lookup table RAMs (LUTRAMs) available in SLICEM resources are configured as quad-port RAM, which constitutes the basic memory (BM) block in the implementation of DURE. The contents of the TCAM table are divided into chunks of equal size and mapped onto the LUTRAMs of the proposed BM blocks. DURE implements dynamic updates by reconfiguring the LUTRAMs of only those BM blocks that are associated with the word being updated, thereby allowing search and update operations to be performed simultaneously. This achieves a lookup rate of 335 million lookups per second, with an update rate of 5.15 million updates per second on a 512 x 36 size TCAM on a Virtex-6 FPGA. Compared with the existing SRAM-based TCAMs, DURE has a smaller single-cycle search latency and achieves at least 2.5 times more energy efficiency and a 67% higher performance per area.

Ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) is a high-speed searching device that searches the entire memory in parallel in deterministic time, unlike random-access memory (RAM) which searches sequentially. A network router classifies and forwards a data packet with the aid of a TCAM that stores the routing data in a table. FPGAs, due to its hardware-like performance and software-like reconfigurability, are widely used in networking systems where TCAM is an essential component. TCAM is not included in modern FPGAs which leads to the emulation of TCAM using available resources on FPGA. Several emulated TCAM designs are presented but they lack the efficient utilization of FPGA’s hardware resources. In this paper, we present a novel TCAM architecture, distributed RAM based TCAM (D-TCAM), using D-CAM as a building block. One D-CAM block implements a 48-bytes TCAM using 64 lookup tables (LUTs), that is cascaded horizontally and vertically to increase the width and depth of TCAM, respectively. A sample size of 512×144 is implemented on Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA which reduced the hardware utilization by 60% compared to the state-of-the-art FPGA-based TCAMs. Similarly, by exploiting the LUT-flip-flip (LUT-FF) pair nature of Xilinx FPGAs, the proposed TCAM architecture improves throughput by 58.8% without any additional hardware cost.

This paper presents an intelligent recognition sys-tem for handwritten Pashto letters. However, handwritten char-acter recognition is challenging due to the variations in shape and style. In addition to that, these characters naturally vary among individuals. The identification becomes even daunting due to the lack of standard datasets comprising of inscribed Pashto letters. In this work, we have designed a database of moderate size, which encompasses a total of 4488 images, stemming from 102 distinguishing samples for each of the 44 letters in Pashto. Furthermore, the recognition framework extracts zoning features followed by K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) and Neural Network (NN) for classifying individual letters. Based on the evaluation, the proposed system achieves an overall classification accuracy of approximately 70.05% by using KNN, while an accuracy of 72% through NN at the cost of an increased computation time.

Static random-access memory (SRAM)-based ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM), an alternative to traditional TCAM, where inclusion of SRAM improves the memory access speed, scalability, cost, and storage density compared to conventional TCAM. In order to confidently use the SRAM-based TCAMs in application, an update module (UM) is essential. The UM replaces the old TCAM contents with fresh contents. This letter proposes a fast update mechanism for an SRAM-based TCAM and implements it on Xilinx Virtex-6 field-programmable gate array. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first ever proposal on content-update-module in an SRAM-based TCAM, which consumes least possible clock cycles to update a TCAM word.
