China’s extensive grasslands are ecologically and economically vital but are increasingly degraded by grasshopper outbreaks. Traditional monitoring approaches are too limited for large-scale management. This study developed an advanced monitoring framework for the Xilingol League by integrating multi-source remote sensing, a degree-day model, and machine learning (ML). Field survey data from 2018 to 2023 were combined with 29 environmental variables aligned to grasshopper life stages. Four ML algorithms—Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), and Logistic Regression (LR)—were evaluated for predictive performance. RF consistently outperformed other models, achieving the highest accuracy and robustness. Spatial autocorrelation analysis (Global Moran’s I) confirmed that grasshopper distributions were persistently clustered across all years, highlighting non-random outbreak patterns. Suitability mapping showed highly suitable habitats concentrated in East Ujumqin, West Ujumqin, and Xilinhot, with pronounced interannual variability, including a peak in 2022. Variable importance analysis identified soil type and vegetation type as dominant universal drivers, while precipitation, soil texture, and humidity exerted region-specific effects. These findings demonstrate that coupling biologically informed indicators with integrated learning provides ecologically interpretable and scalable predictions of outbreak risk. The framework offers a robust basis for early warning and targeted management, advancing sustainable pest control and grassland conservation.
The locust Oedaleus decorus undergoes massive outbreaks and engages in round-trip migratory flights across northern China and Mongolia. However, its specific genetic structure remains poorly understood. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of 163 O. decorus individuals from 16 locations in northern China using high-throughput sequencing data and analyzed its population structure. The results showed that these mitochondrial genomes are 15,142 to 15,914 bp in sizes, with size variation attributed to A + T-rich regions in intergenic spacers. All 13 protein-coding genes exhibited conserved lengths across samples. The overall genetic differentiation between populations was small (Fst = 0.00843), with high gene flow (Nm = 29.40). Both genetic differentiation and DAPC analyses revealed significant genetic differentiation in the New Barag Left Banner (NBL) population compared to the Zhengxiangbai Banner (ZB), Taibus Banner (TP), Xianghuang Banner (XH), and Zhenglan Banner (ZL) populations. The phylogenetic tree and haplotype network suggest Hap_20 is presumably a relatively ancestral haplotype and all haplotypes were divided into two clades, and no population formed a distinct independent clade. Our findings indicate that the O. decorus population in North China exhibits mitochondrial subtype differentiation. The lack of difference in genetic structure across different regions in North China is consistent with a high level of migratory activity by O. decorus in the region.

Cuscuta campestris Yunck. is one of the most destructive parasitic weeds worldwide, causing substantial economic losses because of its broad host range, prolific seed production, and long-term persistence in the soil seed bank. The limited effectiveness and environmental constraints of conventional control measures have intensified the search for sustainable biological alternatives. This study investigated indigenous fungi associated with C. campestris in Kazakhstan as prospective biological control candidates. During field surveys conducted in southern and southeastern Kazakhstan in 2024–2025, symptomatic dodder plants were collected, and 109 fungal isolates were recovered from stems and seeds, including representatives of Fusarium, Alternaria, and Ascochyta, together with several saprophytic genera. Preliminary in vitro seed assays identified Fusarium proliferatum F6 and Alternaria alternata A5 and A19 as producing the highest percentages of affected seeds, reaching 100% by day 15. No visible disease symptoms were observed in soybean or alfalfa during a seven-day preliminary non-target assay. These findings support further greenhouse, field, and host-range evaluation of the selected isolates and provide a basis for continued development of fungal agents against C. campestris.
