Osteoporosis, a significant public health concern, affects millions of adult women globally, leading to increased morbidity and fracture risk. Antidepressant use, prevalent in this demographic, is suggested to influence bone mineral density (BMD), yet evidence remains limited across antidepressant classes. We investigated the association between antidepressant use and osteoporosis in a representative sample of adult women in the United States, focusing on different classes of antidepressants and their potential associations with BMD and fracture risk. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from ten cohorts of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999-2000 to 2017-2020. The sample included adult women, with data collected on antidepressant use, BMD scores, and reported fractures. Statistical models adjusted for potential confounders such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), age, physical activity, and comorbidities. Antidepressant use was associated with a 44 % increase in the odds of osteoporosis. Phenylpiperazines showed the highest association, followed by miscellaneous antidepressants and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) also demonstrated significant, though comparatively lower associations. The odds of fractures were elevated by 62 % among antidepressant users, particularly with phenylpiperazines and miscellaneous antidepressants. A dose-response analysis indicated that both the number and duration of antidepressants were associated with increased odds of osteoporosis. Our findings underscore the need for heightened awareness of the adverse effects of antidepressants on bone health, particularly in adult women. Careful consideration is necessary when prescribing these medications, especially in populations at risk for osteoporosis and MDD.

Apolipoprotein A (ApoA) proteins, ApoA-I, ApoA-II, ApoA-IV, and ApoA-V, play critical roles in lipid metabolism, neuroinflammation, and blood–brain barrier integrity, making them pivotal in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), stroke, Parkinson’s disease (PD), and multiple sclerosis (MS). This review synthesizes current evidence on their structural and functional contributions to neuroprotection, highlighting their dual roles as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. ApoA-I, the most extensively studied, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and amyloid-clearing properties, with reduced levels associated with AD progression and cognitive decline. ApoA-II modulates HDL metabolism and stroke risk, while ApoA-IV influences neuroinflammation and amyloid processing. ApoA-V, although less explored, is implicated in stroke susceptibility through its regulation of triglycerides. Genetic polymorphisms (e.g., APOA1 rs670, APOA5 rs662799) further complicate disease risk, showing population-specific associations with stroke and neurodegeneration. Therapeutic strategies targeting ApoA proteins, including reconstituted HDL, mimetic peptides, and gene-based approaches, show promise in preclinical models but face translational challenges in human trials. Clinical trials, such as those with CSL112, highlight the need for neuro-specific optimization. Further research should prioritize human-relevant models, advanced neuroimaging techniques, and functional assays to elucidate ApoA mechanisms inside the central nervous system. The integration of genetic, lipidomic, and clinical data offers potential for enhancing precision medicine in neurological illnesses by facilitating the generation of ApoA-targeted treatments and bridging current deficiencies in disease comprehension and therapy.

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence has made significant strides in healthcare, contributing to diagnosing, treating, monitoring, preventing, and testing various diseases. Despite its broad adoption, clinical consensus on AI’s role in infection control remains uncertain. This scoping review aims to understand the characteristics of AI applications in bacterial infection control. Results: This review examines the characteristics of AI applications in bacterial infection control, analyzing 54 eligible studies across 5 thematic scopes. The search from 3 databases yielded a total of 1165 articles, only 54 articles met the eligibility criteria and were extracted and analyzed. Five thematic scopes were synthesized from the extracted data; countries, aim, type of AI, advantages, and limitations of AI applications in bacterial infection prevention and control. The majority of articles were reported from high-income countries, mainly by the USA. The most common aims are pathogen identification and infection risk assessment. The most common AI used in infection control is machine learning. The commonest reported advantage is predictive modeling and risk assessment, and the commonest disadvantage is generalizability of the models. Methods: This scoping review was developed according to Arksey and O’Malley frameworks. A comprehensive search across PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted using broad search terms, with no restrictions. Publications focusing on AI in infection control and prevention were included. Citations were managed via EndNote, with initial title and abstract screening by two authors. Data underwent comprehensive narrative mapping and categorization, followed by the construction of thematic scopes. Conclusions: Artificial intelligence applications in infection control need to be strengthened for low-income countries. More efforts should be dedicated to investing in models that have proven their effectiveness in infection control, to maximize their utilization and tackle challenges.

Introduction: Wandering spleen (WS) is a rare condition characterized by abnormal splenic mobility due to congenital absence or acquired laxity of its suspensory ligaments. It is more prevalent in children and women of childbearing age and may present asymptomatically or with acute abdominal symptoms due to splenic torsion, which can lead to infarction or rupture. Presentation of Case: We report a case of a 10‐year‐old female who presented with a 4‐day history of persistent nonbilious vomiting, generalized abdominal pain, and fever. Physical examination revealed a rigid abdomen with tenderness and guarding in the right iliac fossa. Abdominal ultrasound demonstrated an ectopic, enlarged spleen (19 cm) in the lower abdomen, with absent blood flow on Doppler imaging. A contrast‐enhanced computed tomography (CT) confirmed splenic torsion, showing the spleen in the mid‐abdomen with twisted vascular pedicle and hypoperfusion. The patient underwent urgent splenectomy due to ischemic changes and infarction. Postoperatively, she recovered uneventfully and remained stable during follow‐up. Discussion: WS may be congenital, due to incomplete fusion of the dorsal mesentery, or acquired, associated with factors such as pregnancy or chronic splenomegaly. Splenic torsion is the most severe complication, requiring prompt intervention. Imaging modalities such as Doppler ultrasound and CT are critical for diagnosis. Splenopexy is the treatment of choice for viable spleens, whereas splenectomy is necessary for infarcted spleens. Conclusion: WS is a rare, clinically challenging diagnosis requiring high suspicion. Early imaging and surgical intervention are essential to prevent life‐threatening complications.

Glyphosate herbicide has been linked with airway diseases in adults. Evidence remains inconsistent, without investigations conducted in youthful populations. This study aims to examine the association between glyphosate and obstructive airway diseases in adult and youth samples in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Glyphosate exposure was categorized into tertiles. Separate multiple logistic regressions were conducted for adults and youths, adjusting for relevant covariates. Analyses were stratified by age. Sensitivity analyses explored associations with past-year asthma-related events. In total, 4031 adults and 1692 youths were included. There was a significant dose–response relationship between glyphosate and airway diseases in adults (tertile 2: aOR = 1.17, 95% UI: 0.94, 1.46, p = 0.15; tertile 3: aOR = 1.29, 95% UI: 1.02, 1.62, p = 0.03). Weak associations were shown between glyphosate and asthma in the youth sample (aOR = 1.08, 95% UI: 0.74, 1.58, p = 0.69); however, the relationship was more pronounced in adolescents (aOR = 1.33, 95% UI: 0.82, 2.15, p = 0.24). A dose–response pattern was observed between recent exposure and temporal outcomes in adults, reaching up to 75% higher odds of past-year asthma attacks among participants with glyphosate levels at the third tertile (tertile 3: aOR = 1.75, 95% UI: 0.92, 3.36, p = 0.09). These warrant timely monitoring and prevention strategies, with future research focusing on investigating longitudinal associations.

Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid (TRPV) channels represent one of the seven subfamilies of TRP receptors and are widely expressed throughout the human body where they play pivotal roles in various physiological processes. In the gastrointestinal (GI) system, TRPV channels regulate critical functions such as nutrient absorption, motility, and secretions. Beyond maintaining cellular homeostasis, these channels are involved in pain and inflammation, contributing to diverse pathologies. Their central role in the pathophysiology of different digestive system disorders has made TRPV channels a significant focus of research. Moreover, the involvement of TRPV channels in numerous GI cancers has further heightened research interest in the role of these channels. Accordingly, this review elucidates the structural components and intricate signaling pathways of TRPV channels, focusing on the unique characteristics of each family member (TRPV1–6) in GI physiology. Furthermore, we explore the therapeutic potential of targeting these channels to modulate their physiological and pathological roles, highlighting their promise in treating GI disorders. Additionally, we address the challenges associated with their therapeutic application, considering their interactions in different systems, inherent biochemical characteristics, and the alterations required for effective design.
