This review explores the development, technological foundations, and applications of biosensor technologies across various fields, such as medicine for disease diagnosis and monitoring, and the food industry. However, the primary focus is on their use in detecting contaminants and pathogens, as well as in environmental monitoring for water quality assessment. The review classifies different types of biosensors based on their bioreceptor and transducer, highlighting how they are specifically designed for the detection of emerging contaminants (ECs) and pathogens in water. Key innovations in this technology are critically examined, including advanced techniques such as systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which enable the fabrication of sensors with improved sensitivity and selectivity. Additionally, the integration of microfluidic systems into biosensors is analyzed, demonstrating significant enhancements in performance and detection speed. Through these advancements, this work emphasizes the fundamental role of biosensors as key tools for safeguarding public health and preserving environmental integrity.

The adsorption capacity of a biochar (BC) obtained from pine wood residues was evaluated for its ability to remove two pharmaceuticals: fluoxetine (FLX) and sulfamethizole (SMZ). The material showed promising results in FLX removal, but a limited capacity in the case of SMZ. In order to improve these results, BC surface modifications were made by doping with nitrogen, as well as using acid, basic and electrochemical treatments. A three-dimensional electrosorption treatment proved to be the most effective, increasing the adsorption rate from 0.45 to 13.46 mg/g after evaluating different operating conditions, such as the electrodes used or the BC dosage. Consecutive cycles of BC use were performed through desorption and electro-regeneration techniques to test its capacity for reuse, and it was observed that application in the 25 mA electric field increased the useful life of the material. Finally, the effect of ionic strength was studied, highlighting that the presence of ions did not significantly affect the efficiency of SMZ removal, although a slight increase was observed at a high ion concentration, probably due to a salinization effect.

Sulfamethoxazole is an antibiotic that is among the drugs most frequently found in waters around the world because of its habitual consumption and its high chemical stability that prevents it from being eliminated from the environment. In this study, an electroanalytical methodology based on differential pulse voltammetry is developed for the analysis of sulfamethoxazole at trace levels in water. After the optimization of the instrumental parameters a linear range from 6.59 to 96.27 μM was found with limits of detection and quantification of 1.98 and 6.59 μM, respectively, with an RSD below 6 %. Moreover, several validation studies involving different pH values, water samples and instrumentation-techniques were performed in order to ensure the robustness of the method. For this purpose, the peak area was used as quantitative variable since it is not affected by the pH of the medium even if there is any modification of this parameter during the experiments. Furthermore, the effect of other drug such as trimethoprim on the analytical signal of sulfamethoxazole was also evaluated. Once the method was developed it was tested on the quality control of Soltrim®, obtaining recoveries between 98 and 102 %. Lastly, the voltammetric method was applied for the in situ monitoring of sulfamethoxazole's removal from water samples, specifically by anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton treatments. While the former was coupled to an adsorption process, the latter was carried out with different iron sources including commercial medicines that can be found in wastewater. The problem of significant variation in pH during the treatment was solved by working with the peak area, and so obtaining valid and reliable kinetic data. Although anodic oxidation proved to be faster considering the calculated kobs, electro-Fenton turned out to be more efficient in eliminating the drug, achieving the disappearance of its analytical signal in only 30 min of treatment.
