The current global energy crisis is one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, it highlights the fragility of an old power system based on fossil fuels, geopolitical dependencies and often the precariousness and age of equipment and installations, affecting the economy, security and social stability on a national, regional and world scale. The risk of blackout thus becomes not only a technological threat, but a symbol of the need for a paradigm shift. The energy future must be sustainable, collaborative and adaptable—to guarantee not only the continuity of services with electricity, but also the stability of modern society. This paper provides an intrinsic interdisciplinary analysis on the causes, implications and possible solutions related to major imbalances in contemporary power systems, emphasizing the growing risk of blackout (large power outages). The main causes of crises are analyzed interdisciplinary, such as: insecurity in the functioning of the National Power System, terrorist attack on the National Power System, extreme weather condition, natural calamity, energy insecurity and political/military insecurity. The paper highlights the interdependence between energy infrastructure and energy security, as well as the vulnerability of power grids to cyberattacks, natural disasters and consumer pressures. In addition, socio-economic, technological and political issues are addressed, providing an integrated view of the phenomenon. Finally, national, regional and bilateral mitigation, limitation and restoration (resilience) procedures and measures are proposed in the event of an electricity crisis—blackout.

In the current context of sustainability management and energy insecurity, amplified by the military instability determined by the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the increasingly frequent occurrence of a series of plausible scenarios for disasters or energy blackouts worldwide, this work is a real and applicable model for regional states that would like to critically analyze the situation of their energy security through identifying all the plausible risk scenarios targeting the energy critical infrastructures. The study has identified and assessed two of the most plausible risk scenarios (a natural disaster and a terrorist attack) in the case of a strategic power substation of 220 kV, 400 kV, or 750 kV undergoing a blackout effect. After having assessed the risks, the safety strategy for Romania’s national power system has been elaborated together with the safety strategy for the European Power system-ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity). The results of the study match other specialized works from different European countries and might represent a model for other types of energy safety risk assessments and for other types of critical infrastructures that are vital for the modern European society and for sustainability management.

This paper proposes and validates a method for assessing the resilience of cyber–physical microgrids integrating Photovoltaic (PV) generation and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The approach combines two operational performance indicators—Voltage Deviation Index (VDI) and Energy Not Supplied (ENS)—with a composite resilience index that captures recovery dynamics following physical and cyber disturbances. The method is implemented in MATLAB Simulink R2022b on the IEEE 33-bus feeder, with PV at bus 6 and a BESS at bus 18. Two stress scenarios are analyzed: (i) loss of the main supply at bus 2 and (ii) a cyber-induced communication failure that triggers local (fallback) operation. Compared with the base case, the proposed strategy reduces VDI by approximately 27% and ENS by 12%, demonstrating significantly improved resilience without noticeable performance penalties.

Energy security represents a fundamental pillar of economic sustainability, being defined as a state’s ability to ensure continuous, reliable, and affordable access to energy resources. In the context of recent geopolitical shifts, such as worldwide military conflicts, the vulnerabilities of energy systems have become evident, highlighting the interdependence between energy security and economic stability. Analyzing energy security involves assessing the diversification of sources, supply routes, critical infrastructure, and the degree of dependence on imports. The transition to renewable sources, in line with the objectives established by the European Union, contributes to reducing the risks associated with fossil market volatility and to strengthening economic resilience. At the same time, the integration of digital technologies and the development of storage capacities increase the flexibility of energy systems. Evaluating energy security must include indicators regarding price accessibility, environmental sustainability, and institutional capacity for crisis management. By aligning energy policies with macroeconomic and climate strategies, states can prevent major energy crises, mitigate the impact of external shocks, and ensure long-term sustainable economic development. The study highlights and brings to light Romania’s energy security situation by conducting an in-depth analysis of the Romanian Power System and assessing the most severe vulnerabilities and risks that could jeopardize the proper functioning of the system and the supply to electricity consumers. Based on these findings, various strategies for the safety, security, and resilience of the Romanian Power System have been developed.

Ensuring occupational safety in underground mines is a fundamental priority due to the major risks associated with this unfriendly work environment. This involves employing a set of technical, organizational, and educational measures to reduce the hazards for workers and minimize the risks of accidents and occupational diseases due to electrical and mechanical causes. Old and precarious coal extraction methods, in conjunction with obsolete infrastructure and electrical and mechanical installations, lead to high accident risk, endangering the lives of underground workers when at work. Precarious working conditions and working materials alongside the carelessness of decision makers make underground mine-based work a major cause of accidents and professional illnesses. In this paper, the authors identify, estimate, prioritize, and evaluate the vulnerabilities within underground mines and discuss the actions and resources necessary to mitigate, stop, and/or eliminate these vulnerabilities, as well as a mitigation strategy for stopping and/or eliminating them to achieve increased occupational safety.
