Indocyanine green-loaded mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods (ICG-loaded Au@SiO2) were prepared for the dual capability of X-ray computed tomography (CT) and fluorescence imaging. X-ray CT scanning showed that ICG-loaded Au@SiO2 could provide significant contrast enhancement; Near-infrared fluorescence generated by the nanomaterial was present up to 12 h post intratumoral injection, thus enabling ICG-loaded Au@SiO2 to be used as a promising dual mode imaging contrast agent. Multiplexed images can be more easily obtained with this novel type of multimodal nanostructure compared with traditional contrast agents. The dual mode imaging probe has great potential for use in applications such as cancer targeting, molecular imaging in combination with radiotherapy, and photothermolysis.

Copper-64 is a useful radioisotope for positron emission tomography (PET). Due to the wide range of applications, the demand of 64Cu with low metallic impurities is increasing. Here we report a simple method for the efficient production of high specific activity 64Cu using a cyclotron for biomedical application. We designed new equipment based on the plating of enriched 64Ni as the target, and used automated ion exchange chromatography to purify copper-64 efficiently after irradiation and dissolution of the target in good radiochemical and chemical yield and purity. The 64Cu radionuclide produced using 99.32% enriched 64Ni with a density of 61.4 ± 5.0 mg/cm2, reaching a total radioactivity greater than 200 mCi, with specific activity up to 5.6 GBq/μmoL. It was further incorporated into modified monoclonal antibody DOTA-rituximab to synthesize 64Cu-DOTA-rituximab, which was used successfully for micro-PET imaging.

CdZnTe detectors have been under development for the past two decades, providing good stopping power for gamma rays, lightweight camera heads and improved energy resolution. However, the performance of this type of detector is limited primarily by incomplete charge collection problems resulting from charge carriers trapping. This paper is a review of the progress in the development of CdZnTe unipolar detectors with some data correction techniques for improving performance of the detectors. We will first briefly review the relevant theories. Thereafter, two aspects of the techniques for overcoming the hole trapping issue are summarized, including irradiation direction configuration and pulse shape correction methods. CdZnTe detectors of different geometries are discussed in detail, covering the principal of the electrode geometry design, the design and performance characteristics, some detector prototypes development and special correction techniques to improve the energy resolution. Finally, the state of art development of 3-D position sensing and Compton imaging technique are also discussed. Spectroscopic performance of CdZnTe semiconductor detector will be greatly improved even to approach the statistical limit on energy resolution with the combination of some of these techniques.

Background: Epiretinal implants based on microelectro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology with a polyimide (PI) material are being proposed for application. Many kinds of non-photosensitive PIs have good biocompatibility and stability as typical MEMS materials for implantable electrodes. However, the effects of MEMS microfabrication, sterilization and implantation using a photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) microelectrode array for epiretinal electrical stimulation has not been extensively examined. Methods: A novel PSPI (Durimide 7510) microelectrode array for epiretinal electrical stimulation was designed, fabricated based on MEMS processing and microfabrication techniques. The biocompatibility of our new microelectrode was tested in vitro using an MTT assay and direct contact tests between the microelectrode surface and cells. Electrochemical impedance characteristics were tested based on a three-electrode testing method. The reliability and stability was evaluated by a chronic implantation of a non-functional array within the rabbit eye. Histological examination and SEM were performed to monitor possible damage of the retina and microelectrodes. Electrically evoked potentials (EEPs) were recorded during the acute stimulation of the retina. Results: The substrate was made of PSPI and the electrode material was platinum (Pt). The PSPI microelectrode array showed good biocompatibility and appropriate impedance characteristics for epiretinal stimulation. After a 6-month epiretinal implantation in the eyes of rabbits, we found no local retinal toxicity and no mechanical compression caused by the array. The Pt electrodes adhesion to the PSPI remained stable. A response to electrical stimuli was with recording electrodes lying on the visual cortex. Conclusion: We provide a relevant design and fundamental characteristics of a PSPI microelectrode array. Strong evidences on testing indicate that implantation is safe in terms of mechanical pressure and biocompatibility of PSPI microelectrode arrays on the retina. The dual-layer process we used proffers considerable advantages over the more traditional single-layer approach and can accommodate much many electrode sites. This lays the groundwork for a future, high-resolution retinal prosthesis with many more electrode sites based on the flexible PSPI thin film substrate.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is widely used in the diagnosis of tumors, cardiovascular system diseases, and neurological diseases. Scintillation crystals are an important part of PET scanners; they can convert γ photons into fluorescent photons to obtain their energy, time, and position information. Currently, an important research goal in PET is to find scintillation crystals with better performance. In this work, the principle of scintillation crystals is introduced, and the properties and requirements of scintillation crystals in different PET scanners are analyzed. At present, Lu2(1−x)Y2xSiO5 (LYSO) is the scintillation crystal with the best comprehensive properties. LaBr3 performs even better regarding the timing characteristics and light output; however, LaBr3 has not been used in any PET scanner because of its deliquescence. Detectors made of Gd3(Ga, Al)5O12 (GAGG) exhibit a high depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and have considerable application potential. The application fields of PET are constantly expanding, and its future development aims to achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity, which require scintillation crystals with better performance.
