Climate variables including temperature, rainfall intensity, rainfall acidity, and lithological properties are among the most important factors affecting rock weathering. However, the relative contribution of these four factors on rock weathering, especially on chemical weathering, is still unclear. In this study, we carried out a series of weathering-leaching rainfall simulations on four types of badland sediments under controlled conditions of two levels of temperature, rainfall intensity, and rainfall acidity based on the real field data from representative weather scenarios. The main objectives are 1) to explore the progressive change of sample surface and leachate characteristics and 2) to reveal the independent effects of temperature, rainfall intensity, rainfall acidity, and lithology and their relative contribution as well, on both mechanical and chemical weathering. Qualitative analysis on crack development and fragmentation of sample surface and quantitative analysis on the leachate volume, pH, electrical conductivity, and total cation and anion releases of sample leachate together demonstrated that for the investigated sediments, under the conditions of temperature, intensity, and acidity of rain that can be achieved in nature, high drying temperature obviously increases mechanical disintegration by promoting the rate and magnitude of moisture variations (wetting–drying alterations), while high rainfall intensity and acid rain have no obvious effect. Impact and importance of the drying process caused by high temperature between wetting events need more attention, rather than high rainfall intensity. Low temperature, high rainfall intensity, and acid rain contributing more hydrogen ions required for cation exchanges, rock type with more soluble minerals, all promote chemical weathering, and the influence of climatic and lithological factors on chemical weathering decreases in the following order: mineral composition> rainfall intensity > temperature > rainfall acidity. Climatic variations on temperature can modify weathering processes and in that way conditioned hydro-geomorphological processes in badland areas. Such changes should be considered for direct and indirect implications on badland dynamics.

Thanks to several components with health-promoting properties, mushrooms are recognized as a practical functional food and a valuable source of nutrients for the food industry. Ergosterol, the major sterol in edible mushrooms and a precursor of vitamin D2 with proven pharmacological activity and nutritional value, has become a very important topic in chemical and medical research. The main objectives of this study were to determine the ergosterol content in different species of Serbian wild mushrooms and in commercial mushrooms from Korean and Serbian grocery stores using square-wave voltammetry, to compare the concentrations in different parts of white button mushrooms, and to determine a possible relationship between Zn, Cu and Fe and ergosterol contents. The ergosterol contents varied between 0.01 and 7.04 mg/g (dry mass) of the mushrooms and were generally higher in cultivated mushrooms than in wild mushrooms. In addition, the ergosterol concentration was higher in the stems than in the caps of the mushrooms examined. Iron, Zn and Cu contents varied between the mushroom species at 8.5–479.9, 13.1–149.7 and 1.62–93.03 mg/kg, respectively, and principal component analysis (PCA) extracted two factors explaining 79.14% of the total variance, suggesting a direct relationship between iron and ergosterol content. This is the first comprehensive study to analyze and evaluate ergosterol concentrations in edible mushrooms from Korea and Serbia.

Crayons and colored pencils for children may contain toxic elements (TEs) exhibiting potential risk for children?s health including cognitive development, after their ingestion, through mouthing and chewing and eventually, their accumulation. The aim of this study was to determine total content of As, Pb, Cr, Cd, Ni and Sb and estimate their bioaccessibility conducting artificial saliva extraction. Sixty samples of colored pencils and crayons from 10 manufacturers were analyzed. Microwave acid assisted digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma optical spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was performed for determination of total content of TEs. Simulation of extraction by artificial saliva was applied to get more reliable data when bioavailability is concerned. The total concentrations of TEs were higher in colored pencils than in crayons and their maximum levels were: 5.78, 9.36, 9.97, 0.615, and 6.63 mg kg-1 for As, Pb, Cr, Cd and Ni, respectively. Concentration of Sb was below the detection limit for all investigated samples. This study showed that concentration of As and Pb in several samples did not comply with European Union regulative. Bioaccessibility study showed the high degree of leaching of Cr and As from pencils, but regardless of extracted portions, concentrations of selected investigated TEs were below allowed levels.

This study focuses on the optimization of modern extraction techniques for selected by-product materials, including apple, lemon, and tangerine peels, and onion skins, using artificial neural network (ANN) models. The extraction methods included ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with water as the extractant, as well as maceration (MAC) with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES). Key parameters, such as total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities, including reducing power (EC50) and free radical scavenging capacity (IC50), were evaluated to compare the efficiency of each method. Among the techniques, UAE outperformed both MAE and MAC in extracting bioactive compounds, especially from onion skins and tangerine peels, as reflected in the highest TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity. UAE of onion skins showed the best performance, yielding the highest TPC (5.735 ± 0.558 mg CAE/g) and TFC (1.973 ± 0.112 mg RE/g), along with the strongest antioxidant activity (EC50 = 0.549 ± 0.076 mg/mL; IC50 = 0.108 ± 0.049 mg/mL). Tangerine peel extracts obtained by UAE also exhibited high phenolic content (TPC up to 5.399 ± 0.325 mg CAE/g) and strong radical scavenging activity (IC50 0.118 ± 0.099 mg/mL). ANN models using multilayer perceptron architectures with high coefficients of determination (r2 > 0.96) were developed to predict and optimize the extraction results. Sensitivity and error analyses confirmed the robustness of the models and emphasized the influence of the extraction technique and by-product type on the antioxidant parameters. Principal component and cluster analyses showed clear grouping patterns by extraction method, with UAE and MAE showing similar performance profiles. Overall, these results underline the potential of UAE- and ANN-based modeling for the optimal utilization of agricultural by-products.

Natural metal enrichment, combined with centuries of mining activity in the Rudnik Mountain region of Serbia, has led to the long-term accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the soil. Although the investigated area lies outside the current zone of active exploitation, the persistence and mobility of accumulated PTEs, historical contamination can still affect the local population. This study integrated assessments of soil characterization, enrichment, sequential extraction-based fractionation, mobility, and bioavailability of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, as well as the associated ecological and human health risks. Geochemical and environmental pollution indices further identified As, Pb, and Cd as the main contributors to environmental risk. Sequential extraction results based on the BCR protocol indicated significant bioavailability of Cd (32% in the exchangeable fraction) and Pb (74% in the reducible fraction). In contrast, over 80% of As was present in the residual fraction, indicating limited mobility and low bioavailability. Health risk assessment for the local rural population revealed significant potential health concerns at the investigated sites, with exceedances of the hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) values, primarily associated with As as the main contributing pollutant.
